To all whom it may cmmern:
Be it known that I, J OHN Bron, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bu'rling ton, in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Device for Casting'lndicia on Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to casting apparatus particularly'for use in machines of the centrifugal type used for making cast iron pipe. An object of. the invention 15 to provide a .means for casting in the pipe the name, trade mark, or other lettering or configurations which are to be made as an integral part of the cast iron ipe, and which may be formed in the pipe uring the centrifugal casting operation. a
There are various machines for casting pipe by centrifugal action end a prominent type of machine is that disclosed in the United States 27, 1920 to J. B. Ladd. It is the purpose of this invention to provide a device w ich may be used 'with machines for casting the characters in t e exterior body wall of the cast iron pipe. y
A further object of the invention is to provide a character casting device whichmay be applied to the rotary mould body for producing outstanding characters or symbols upon theexterior of the cast artic e and which are so formed that they will not interfere with the withdrawal of the finished product after the casting operation.
A-still further object of the invention is to provide a moulding device for detachable mounting in the rotary mould body and thereon which are individual to the person pi es or pipes for different manufacturers-- e above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be descrlbed in and in tpart understood from the following detaile present referred embodiment, the same 1 drawings, wherein:

The present Figure 1 shows a pedestal-15 in which is mounted on bearings 16 the head 17 of a mould housing 18. The mould housingis surrounded by a stationary shell 19 and the housing carr es therein a mould body 20 sha ed to thedesired size and configuration oft ecast product. The mould body 20 has '1 a bell end 21 into which is removably fitted the moulding device of this invention;
, The moulding device com rises an annular body or liner 22 whic :is exteriorly threaded for detachable engagement wit internal threads 23 within the bell end, theto receive the liner or moulding device 22 .bell'end 21 being counterbored and.- tapped and the latter being given a thickness correspending to that of the material removed from the inner wall of the bell end -21.' The liner 22 is threadedinto the bellend 21 "in ,a direction counter. to that injwliich the mouId body turns so that there will be no likelihood of the liner 21 becoming loose or disengaged from the bell end.
The inner wall of the liner 22 is bored out to the conventional size and shape ofthe hub and spigot pipe, and the characters, which may letters, symbols or a combination of the'two, are sunk in the inner wall of the liner 22 as shown at 24 in Fig.1, and
are located at the inner end of the liner at that portion where the bell end merges or converges into the body of the pipe.
Advantage is taken of this inclined or converging wall of the bell end of the mould body to provide the characters in outstandingrelation or relief on the exterior surface of the pipeso that the pipe may be easily removed from the mould body by withdraw ing the pipe through the bell end 21 without injury to the mould body or to the cast pipe. As shown in Figs. 7 and 9 the transverse grooves or depressions in the inner wall of the liner 22 are flared outwardly attheir bottom walls at an angleof substantially three degrees'to a line parallel with the axis of the liner so that the raised ribs or characters on the exterior surface of themoulded article may rccede from said bottom walls without frictional contact with the faces and thus without injury to either the article or the mould.
In use, the liner or moulding device 22 with its characters 24 is threaded intothe .bell end 21 of the mould body and the ters 24 becomes set, and ,when the pipe 25 with its bell' end is withdrawn through the bell end 21 of the mould bodv.' the formed characters 26 on the exterior surface ofthe pipe 25 are free to move directly away from the surfaces of the cavities of the characters 24 by virtue ofthe outward flaring of the bottoms of the'cavities. It will be also ob-' served from Figs. 7 and 9 that the outer walls of the cavities merge into the inclined wall of the liner 22"so that no shoulders or rlbs mterfere in any way with the direct removalof the pipe and its formed characters 26. I
It is of course understood that various changes in the construction and shape of the liner or moulding device 22 maybe made;
and also that the: cavities 24 in the inner wall of the liner may be given various configurations and sizes to cast the names of manufacturers of the cast article and the trade mark or symbol by which the goods may be I later identified, without departing from the spirit of the invention, all of these various changes bein restricted only by the scope of the following claims.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a centrifugal casting machine having a tubular mould body with a bell end, a liner detachably fitted in said bell end and having an inner wall conforming to the contour of theremoved inner wall of the bell end, said liner having character grooves formed in its inner wall at its contracting inner end, said grooves having their inner walls flaring outwardly at an angle suflicient to liberate characters formed on the cast article as the latter is withdrawn t-hroughesaid bell end.
2. The combination with a centrifu al cast-ing machine having a rotary tubu ar mould with a bell end, a. liner detachably threaded in said bell end and having its inner. wall conforming to the configuration of the bell end, said liner having in its inner wall depressions forming matrices of characters in the inner wall of the liner and atthe converging inner end thereof, said depressions' facing an ularly outward through the bell end and aving their inner walls flaring outwardly from the axis of the liner for liberating characters cast integral upon the exterior surface of the artlcle moulded.
' 3.-The combination with a centrifugal pipe casting machine having atubular rotary mould with a bell end, a ring shaped moulding device externally threaded for detachable engagement in said bell end of the mould body, said moulding device havln 'an'inner wall converging at the inner en of the device to form an inclined wall and having in .said inclined wall character.
grooves into which the metal treated is adapted to be cast to form characters upon the exterior surface of a pipe, said character grooves having their outer sides mergmg into the inclined wall of the'moulding device and having their bottoms flaring outwardly toward the end of the mould body for liberating the characters cast. upon the outer face of the pipe. v 4. In a rotary casting machine a centrlfugal mould providing a passageway therethrough having .a moulding surface slopln with respect to the axis of the mould,.sai sloping. surface having character forming depressions therein so constructed that an article moulded may be withdrawn from an end of the mould passageway.
'5. In combination with a rotary casting machine including a mould body rotatably supported therein, a removable liner fitted in the mould body by screw threading therein in a direction counter to the normal direc-' tion of travel of said mould body, said liner having character forming depressions therein into which the moulded material is adaptsurface over which the moultenwmetalwill flow, said inclined surface being provided with character forming depressions therein the outermost edges of which character forming depressions merge into the sloping surface of the mould and the innermost edges of which-characters provideshoulders arranged obliquely to the sloping moulding surface of said mould.
7. In combination with a rotarv casting machine, a mould therefor providing a pas sageway therethrough adapted to receive the moulten metal, said passageway including a portion of its surface therein inclined with respect to the axis of said passageway, said inclined surface having character forming depressions therein the bottom surfaces of which slope in diverging acute angular relation with respect to the axis of the mould passageway toward one end of said passageway.
- 8. In a centrifugal casting machine a rotary mould provmmg a passageway therein, said casting passageway at an end thereof being provided with a bell shaped cavity provldlng sloping surfaces inclined with respect to the axis of the assageway, said sloping surfaces having c aracter forming depressions therein the outermost edges of which merge into the sloping surface of the mould passageway and the'innermost ed e portions 'of which depressions provi e shoulders arrangedobliquely to the sloping surface of said mould passageway, the bottom surfaces of said depressions being arranged in diverging acute angular relatlon to the axis of the-mould toward the larger end of said passageway.
9. In avrotary casting machine a centrifu'gal mould providing "a passageway therethrough having a moulding surface sloping ,with respect to the axis of the mould and towards an open end of said mould, said sloping surface havin character forming depressions therein facing said open end of the mould whereby an article moulded may be easily withdrawn from said open end of the mould.
