To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, J OHN A. HOWARD, S12, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of lVest New Brighton, in the county of Richmond, Staten Island, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Sectional Boiler, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates more particularly to a class of heating apparatus.
11y invention has for its object primarily to provide a boiler designed to be employed for heating buildings and other structures by either steam or hot water, and which is of a sectional type so that additions may be made thereto for increasing the supply of units of heat when an increased radiation is desired without requiring the boiler to be replaced with a new one as well as permitting repairs to parts of the boiler to be made in event of damage by wear or otherwise with out removal of the boiler in entirety. These advantages are attained. mainly by providing a front section, a back section and one or moreintermediate sections, each having a main water chamber supported upon. spaced walls or standards with a hollow base portion so that when the sections are assembled the spaces between the walls provide a fire box and the hollow base portions provide an ash pit. The main chamber of each section of the boiler has an inlet for admitting water as well as having an outlet, and the outlets of all the sections are connected to a common pipe for delivering the water or steam for heat radiation. Thus in event of needing repairs one or more of the sections of the boiler may be replaced with new ones or other sections may be readily added when it is desired 'to enlarge the capacity of the boiler. v
Another object of the invention is to provide in each section one or more separate in nor heating chambers which are removably arranged in the fire box portion of each section, and each inner chamber has a water receiving inlet and an outlet communicating with the inlet of the main chamber for supplying water to the main chamber so that the water previous to its delivery to the main Specification of Letters Patent.

Still another object of the invention is to provide on the exterior of each inner heating chamber ribs or corrugations whereby the surface area of the chamber when of a given size is enlarged for hastening the heating of the water and enabling its heat to be maintained at an efficient temperature with a moderate consumption of fuel in the fire box.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and durably constructed sectional boiler adapted to be made in any suitable shape and size.
With these and other objects in view the invention will be hereinafter more fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.

The boiler or heating apparatus has a front section 10. a back section 11 and between these sections may be provided one or a number of intermediate sections, as 13, according to the desired capacity of the boiler. All of thesections' are preferably of corresponding sizes and shapes. and each section has a hollow body part 14 providing a main chamber which may be of any suitable shape, though the form illustrated is somewhat oval or elliptic in cross section. The main chamber 14; of each of the sections is supported upon two spaced side walls or standards 15 and 16 which are disposed downwardly from the main chamber so that the narrow curved parts oi the chamber are disposed on a longitudinal plane, and when each section of the boiler is made in the form of a metallic shell the side walls of each section may be hollow, as shown. On the lower ends of the side walls 15 and 16 of each section may be provided a hollow base portion 17, and the spaces between the side walls provide a fire box 18, while the interior of the base portions provide an ash pit 19 when the front 10 and back 11 sec tions are assembled to provide a boiler complete or when one or more of the intermediate sections 13 are employed to provide the boiler, the required arrangement of the sections consisting of disposing the sections in. adjoining positions so that the spaces between the side walls are in register and the interior of the base portions are in communication. The space between the side walls 15 and 16 at the exposed face of the front section 10 of the boiler is closed by a wall 20 with a door, as 21, leading into the fire box 18, and the hollow base portion .17 ofthe front section has a front wall 2 with a door 2-3 leading into the ash pit 19. The spacebetween the side walls and 16 at the exposed face of the back section 1.1 of the boiler may be closed by a wall 23 and the hollow base portion '1'? of the back section may terminate with a wall 24.
The fire box portion and the interior or ashpit, portion of each section of the boiler are in communication, and crosswise oithe lower part of the lire box portion of each section is a grate, as 25. On opposite parts of the grate 25 of each section of the boiler are protruding studs 26 and 537 which are rotatably mounted in socket-s on the interior of the side walls .15 and. to of the tire box portion of each section, and at one of the corresponding studs of all of the grates is a depending arm, as 27. The grates are thereby adapted to be tilted to allow the ashes of the burned fuel to be shaken from the firebox into the ash pit, and to permit all of the grates of the boiler to be 0;, rated in unison for sifting the ashes the depending arms 27 of the grates are pivoted to a common longitudinally disposed bar 28 which extends to the front section 10. To this endof the operating bar 28 is pivoted, at 29, the lower endof an upwardly disposed handle 30 having its central part pivoted, at '31, to the front section of the boiler so that y swin-ging the upper part of the handle accordingly the bar 28 will be moved back V and forth for tilting the grates to sift the into the main chamber l4: of the respective section for admitting water into the main. chambers. In similar parts of the tops of the sections of the boiler is an outlet 34 for discharge of steam or water from the main chamber of each section according to whether the boiler used as a hot water or steam heating apparatus. ()11 the main chamber of the front section, back section and each of the intermediate sections of the boiler may be provided a safety valve '35, a steam gage 36 and a water gage 37 all of which may be of any well known or preferred types.
In order to heat the water before its delivery to the main chamber 14 of each section of the boiler in the fire box portion 18 of the front section 10, back section 11 and each intermediate section 13 are provided one or two separate inner heating chambers, as 38 and 39. All of these superheating chambers are preferably of like forma tions, and each chamber has an elongated. hollow body, as 40, with corrugations or spaced ribs 4-11 on its entire exterior so that the chambers when of given sizes will be provided with enlarged surface areas for receiving an unusual spread of heat from the burning fuel in the fire box of the boiler. The inner heating chambers may be disposedlongitudinally or in any suitable posi tions in the fire box portions of the sections of the boiler, but I prefer to arrange the chambers in vertical positions adjacent to the side walls of the sections, as showinas well as disposing the chambers so that their lower ends w1ll be in spaced proximity to the grate 25, in order that the chambers will be subjected to the direct-heat of the burning fuel whether the fire is banked or in a state of active combustion. The pair of the inner heating chambers of. each sec tion of the boiler has in their lower end parts inlet pipes 4-1 and 42 which pass through openings in the contiguous side walls of the section. When the sections of the boiler are assembled all of the inlet pipes 41 are connected to a common pipe, as 43, leading from a suitable source of water supply with a valve 44 interposed therein for cutting 0d the supply when needed. while the inlet pipes 42 are likewise connected to a common pipe, as 44, also lead ing from the source of water supply, and if desired. in the supply pipe 44 may be interposed a cuteott' valve, not shown. Leading from. the upper end parts of the inner heating chambers of each section of the boiler outlet pipes 45 and 46 both of which are connected to the inlets 32 and 33 of the main chamber 14 of their section of the boiler so that water, as 47,, delivered into each pair of the heating chambers will of the outlet pipes into the main chamber. In the back section ll of the boiler and leading from its fire box is a chin'iney or smoke iiuc' lS, and the outlet -34 of the main chamber of each section of the boiler is connected to a common. pipe 4-9 for distributing the steam to radiators.- not shown, for heating purposes. Thus I provide a boiler of a simple, durable and unusually efficient construction for heating buildings and other structures, and which is of a sectional form whereby increased units of heat when desired may be provided by en-- larging the boiler with additional sections as well as allowing repairs to parts of the boiler to be made in event of dai'nage by wear or otherwise.
In the foregoing description, I have embodied. the preferred form of my invention, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departingfrom the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore, I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope thereof.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, in a boiler, of a front section and a back section, each having a main water chamber supported upon two spaced walls with a hollow base portion so that when arranged whereby the spaces between the walls are in communication a fire box will be provided and the interior of the base portions will provide an ash pit, the main chamber of each section having an inlet and an outlet, the outlets, being relatively arranged so as to be connected to a common distributing pipe, and a pair of removable separate inner heating chambers in the fire box of each section, each of said inner chambers having an inlet leading from a source of water supply and having an outlet leading to the inlet of the main chamber.
2. The combination, in a boiler, of a front section, a back section and an intermediate section, each having a main water chamber supported upon two spaced walls with a hollow base portion so that when arranged whereby the spaces between the walls are in communication a fire box will be provided and the interior of the base portions will provide an ash pit, the front section having a door leading into the fire box as well as having a door leading into the ash pit and the main chamber of each section having an inlet and an outlet, the outlets being relatively arranged so as to be connected to a common distributing pipe, and a pair of removable separate inner heating chambers in the fire box of each section, each of said inner chambers having an inlet leading from a source of water supply and having an outlet leading to the inlet of the main chamber.
3. The combination, in a boiler, of a front section and a back section, each having a main water chamber supported upon two spaced walls with a hollow base portion so that when arranged whereby the spaces between the walls are in communication a fire box will be provided and the interior of the base portions will provide an ash pit, the main chamber of each section having an inlet and an outlet, a movable grate between. the fire box and the ash pit of each section, and a pair of removable separate inner heating chambers in the fire box of each section, each of said inner chambers having an inlet leading from a source of water supply and having an outlet leading to the inlet of the main chamber.

The combination, in a boiler, of a front section, a back section and intermediate sections, each having a main water chamber supported upon two spaced walls with a hollow base portion so that when arranged whereby the spaces between the walls are in communication a fire box will be provided and the interior of the base portions will provide an ash pit, the front section having a door leading into the fire box as well as having a door leading into the ash pit and the main chamber of each section having an inlet and an outlet, a movable grate between the fire box and the ash pit of each section, and a pair of removable separate inner heating chambers in the fire box of each section, each of said inner chambers having an inlet leading from a source of water supply and having an outlet leading to the inlet of the main chamber.
5. The combination, in a boiler, of a front section and a back section, each having a main water chamber supported upon two spaced walls with a hollow base portion and the sections being arranged so that the spaces between the walls provide a fire box, the main chamber of each section having an inlet and an outlet, a distributing pipe connecting the outlets, and a pair of removable separate inner heating chambers with corrugatedexterior surfaces in the fire box of each section, each of said inner chambers having an inlet leading from a source of water supply and having an outlet leading to the inlet of the main chamber.
