MACHINE FOR CUTTING- IPOT'ATOES.
spcification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 28, 1922.
Application led February 9, 1921. Serial No. 443,568.
This invention relates to a machine fory cutting seed potatoes, and has for its object the construction of a simple and eflicient apparatus, whereby the operator can be seated and quickly cut seed potatoes, or out the tops od of beets, or do like or similar work, throwing the potatoes, or beets, etc., into a sack supported upon the apparatus in an open position.
With this and other yobjects in View, my
invention comprises certainother combina-l tions, constructions and novel arrangements,
as will be hereinafter specifically described, illustrated in the vaccompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an apparatus constructed 1n accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a section, taken on line 2 2, Fig.
Figure 3 is a section, taken `on line 3 3, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings by numerals 1 comprises the frame to which is attached the primary standard 2 and the auxiliary standard 3.
Upon the upper end of the auxiliary standard 3 is placed a seat 4, which is secured to the standard by means of braces 5, fastened by screws 6, upon the opposite sides of the standard 3. A block 7 is fastened against the standard 3, and a back 8 is secured to the block 7 and the seat 4. This back comprises a vertical piece 9, to the upper end of which is attached the horizontal back piece 10.
Secured upon the upper end of the primary standard 2 is a platform 11. This platform 11 comprises the board 12 that is protected on its upper face by a metal covering 13. A knife 14 is provided with a threaded bolt-like extension 15 that extends through the metal covering 13 and the board 12 and into the nut 16, which nut is countersunk in the under face of the board 12, so that when the platform is upon the standard 2, the knife is securely retained in place.
Angle braces 17 are fastened to the sidesA of the standard 2 and are alsopfastened to the under face of the board 12, thereby securely' retaining' the platform upon the standardl 2..
A primary horizontal bracket 18 is fastened to the outer face of standard 2 under `the platform 1l, and fastened to the opposite face of standard 2 is an auxiliary horizontal bracket 19. Slidably mounted upon the brackets 18 and 19 is a sack rack 20, which rack is substantially U-shaped and comprises side arms 20a with an upwardly-bowed connection portion or grip 20h; the arms 2Oa extend through suitable apertures formed in the primary and auxiliary brackets, and` nearfits outer end, is provided., outwardly extending sharpened u each arm, with an spur 21, over which is hooked a bag shown by dotted lines 22. The outer ends of the primary bracket 18 is also formed into shape of horns or sharpened spurs 21a, over which the bag 22 is hooked.
The operator sits upon the seat et and cuts 4vegetables or fruits by means of the knife 141, and after cutting, the vegetables or fruits can be easily deposited or placed in the bag 22 that is retainedin' an open position upon the primary bracket 18 and the sack rack 20.
While I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention and have illustrated the same in the accompanying draw-` ing, in the extensive manufacture of my apparatus, certain minor changes or alterations may be found desirable and I, therefore, reserve the right to make such alterations or changes, as shall fairly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a supporting board, a thin sheet metal covering on the top and sideedgesvof said board, a knife having its inner end resting upon said metal covering, a bolt-likeV threaded extension on the knife and projecting through said metal covering and board, a nut countersunk in the under Y against said faceof said board and threaded upon said y extension whereby the nntis held against rotation, thereby firmly-'holding said extenagainst the inner face of the board and entirely covering the boit-like threaded eX- tension and nut7 described.
In testimony whereof signature.
substantially as Vshown and 10 IV hereunto affix` my JOHN F. SALES.
