IMPROVEMENT IN SEATS FOR HARVESTERS, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,075, dated July 22, 1873; application filed May 6, 1872.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. PERRY, of Kingston, in the county of Washington and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain Improvements in Seats for Harvesters, &c., of which the following is a specification:
The nature of this invention consists in making a seat of sheet metal, by cutting or punching the proper-shaped piece out of a sheet, and then swaging it between dies into the desired shape for a seat, in combination with the attaching block and bolt.
Figure 1 shows a side view of the seat and its supporting-spring, Fig. 2 is a top View of the seat. Fig. 3 is a front view of the same. Fig. 4 shows a perspective view of the bed or block fitted between the seat and spring.
The seat A is made from a blank punched or cut out of a sheet of metal, and after having the slots or openings 8 s punched out, it isput between the large dies, formed in the shape in which it is intended to have the seat when finished, and swaged or pressed into shape. It is then fastened to the bed or block 0 and spring-support D by a bolt and nut, a, which screws the three parts together. The block 0 has a recess for the spring to slide in. There is also a slotted hole in the spring for the bolt that holds the seat, so as to set the seat forward or backward, to suit the driver. The seat may be further stiffened by turning its edge over a wire, and by making the dies so as to swage the ribs between the openings into a convex form, if desired.
The block 0 may be made of rubber, wood, or metal, as may be preferred.
Some of the advantages of these seats are, that they are lighter and cheaper than the usual cast-iron seats; also, more springy and yielding in all directions, and, of course, easier; and they can be packed much more compactly for transportation, and sold ready for application to the machines to the various manufacturers of harvesters, hay tedders, horse-rakes, snlky-plows, &c., throughout the country.
It is intended to make the seats smooth or corrugated, and with and without the openings s 8.
What I claim as my invention is A seat for harvesters, &c., consisting of a sheet-metal plate, A, swaged into shape, in combination with the block 0 and bolt 0!, as and for the purposes specified.
