IMPROVEMENT IN LEGS FOR FURNITURE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,071, dated July 22, 1873; application led May 17, 1873.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES C. ORR and of Ohio and State of West Virginia, have in- Vented a new and Improved Construction of Furniture, of which the following is a specilication:
Our invention consists in constructing the legs of tables, desks, chairs, &c., in two parts, made and applied separately at right or other angles to `each other, at the corners, and fastened separately to the table or other article, and fastened together at the bottom by a kind of lock joint, secured by a button at the top on the table.
Figure l is partly a plan view and partly a horizontalsection ot' an inverted table, whereof the legs are constructed and applied accordin g to our in vention; and-Fi g. 2 is a transverse vertical section taken on the line a' :v of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A and B represent the two parts of a tableleg, which in this example are made of tlat pieces of board plank, and at the upper end in wide shallow gains or recesses 0 in the vertical side boards D of the frame of the table or other article which they are to support at some distance from the ends, and they are curved so that the two parts which are thus attached to the two sides of the corner meet together at the angle a little above the lower ends, and are secured by the triangular blocks E F, one above the other, having their edges so shaped that they interlock, and are thereby secured firmly together when one is forced upward against the other by a button, G, on the under side of the table-top, which swings at one end into a notch,H, in` the one having the block E, which is under the block F of the other, the saidv notch being slightly inclined so as to draw upward, and at the same time bind the two parts ofthe leg endwise against the table-top. A similar lock, composed of blocks I J, secures the side boards D together by this upward pressure.
Thus we construct the legs so that when it is desirable to take the table apart for packing the two parts can be readily separated and packed better than if made in one piece.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The leg composed of two parts, AB, notched at top and fitting in grooves of rails D, conA nected at the bottom by blocks E and at the topdby button G, as and for thepurpose specifie JAMES C. ORE. JAMES M. BAIRD.
