aosnrrr emanate CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, 'AssICNon 'ro MASSEY CONCRETE rnonoors GINIA. I
Application meat/ra 22,
To altwko'm; it may, concern: I
Be it known that I, Josnrrr E. ,MoonY, a citizen ofv the United States, residing at 156-1 East Sixty-first Street, Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pole-Making Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates topole making machines for making concrete poles and the like, and it has for its primary object'the provision of improved means, slmple and economical in construction, for directly driving the "mold. 1
Another object of the invention fresidesin the provision of an improved friction drive, operating to directly drive the pole mold.
The foregoing, together with such other objects as may hereinafter appear, or are incident to my invention, I obtain by means of a construction which I haveillustratedin preferred form in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a pole making machine embodying my improvements; Figure 2 is a cross section taken on the line 22 of Figure 1, drawn on a much larger scale; and Figure 3 is a side elevation, similar to that of Figure 1, illustrating a modification of my invention.
Referring now to Figure 1, the machine in general comprises a base A, composed of suitable structural members, preferably imbedded in concrete; a pole mold B adapted to be revolubly supported on the base, as will further appear; the members C for supporting the mold in "position during rotation; and a drivin mechanism indicated as a whole at D. he mold B is preferably of the sectional type comprising a plurality of half mold sections, suitably coupled together to constitute half molds, the two half molds being adapted to be secured togetherby such means as the bolts 7.
The means whereby the mold is revolubly supported on the base comprises a plurality of flanged rollers 8, the axles of'which are mounted in adjustablebearing blocks 9 10- cated on the base along one side thereof; and flanged friction rollers 10 which are mounted on a shaft 11 extending along the other side of the base and there supported in a plurality of bearing blocks. The flanged rollers 8 and the friction rollers 10 are arranged in pairs asis shown in Figure 2 and conro'na'rro or CnrCAGo; ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION or VIR- rom-MAKING MACHINE.
specification of Letters Patent. Patented Ia r 28 1922 1919. Serial No. 298,853.
the driving tires 12, with which the mold B 155 proyided, rest upon the rollers, longitudinal d splacement of the mold being prevented by the flanges. Friction rollers 10 are rotated by means of a. gear 13 keyed to the shaft 11, and a gear 14 meshing therewith, said last gear being keyed to a driving shaft 15 to which the motor 16 is coupled.
Thls arrangement constitutes a simple and effective friction driving means for directly drlvingthe mold itself. It will be seen that the driving arrangement isa particularly' advantageous one when it is considered that themold is assembled, filled with concrete, positioned in the machine, rotated to form the pole and then removed to one side to per mit of the placing of another mold in the machine.
In order to support the mold in the machine during rotation I provide the yoke-like arms C which are preferably rotatably carried on the axles of the rollers 8 and which are provided with a roller 17 at the free end, located in a plane cutting the axes of rotation of the mold and the rollers 8. The up-thrust of the mold during rotation is in the direction of this plane, and as a result of the foregoing disposition of the parts the mold is securely supported. The
' members C are also provlded with an interthe mold. The advantages of thisform of driving mechanism over the older practices involving the use of an outer driving shell withinwhich the mold is slid, will be readily understood by those skilled in the art. Attention is also directed to the fact that the driving arrangement is very effective because when rotating the mold in the direction of the arrow, the friction driving rollers grip the tires 12 very firmly.
I claim:
1. A pole making machine comprising in combination a base, anti-friction means located along one side thereof, friction rollers along the other side thereof, said anti-friction means and said rollers being adapted to revolubly support the mold, a shaft with which said rollers rotate and a motor for driving said shaft whereby the mold is rotated.
2. A pole making machine comprising in combination a base, a shaft, a plurality of rollers rotating with said shaft and adapted to support the mold, a mold, releasable means for holding the mold againstthe rollers, and a motor for driving said shaft whereby the mold is rotated.
3. A centrifugal pole making machine comprising in combination a suitable bed, a mold, means in the .bed for revolubly receiving and supporting the mold, releasable means for holding the mold against said supporting means, and a friction means for rotating the mold having driving engagement with the periphery of the mold.
4. A centrifugal pole making machine comprising in combination a suitable base, a mold, and means in the bed for directly and revolubly supporting the mold, releasable means for holding the mold against said supporting means, said supporting means also serving as a medium for imparting rotation to the mold. a
5. A centrifugal pole making machine saidpairs of rollers, and means for driving certain of said rollers whereby tation to the mold.
6. A centrifugal pole making machine to impart rocomprising in combination a mold, a plurality of rollers adapted to revolubly receive and support the mold and having frictional en a ment therewith, releasable means for holdin the mold against the rollers, and means grdrivingoertainof said rollers whereby to impart rotation to the mold.
7. A centrifugal pole making machine comprising in combination a suitable bed, a mold, rollers in the bed for directly and revolubly supporting the mold, a releasable device for holding the mold against thesupporting rollers during rotation, and means for driving certain of said rollers whereby to impart rotation 'to themold.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name.
