LOCKING DEVICE FOR PINS. V
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 28, 1922.
Application filed March 24, 1920. Serialll'o. 368,408. 7
T all 1071 am it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnr. PnJcHAma citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Securing and Looking Devices for the Pins,
of Brooches and other Articles, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to means for securing and locking the pins of brooches and other articles. of jewelry orthe like.
The object of my invention isto provide a device which may be applied readily to articles of different kinds, which will be strong, simple, and efficient to hold the pin in position, and which will be very compact so as to be applicablein conditions where but little space is available. I
The particularmeans devised by me for carrying out this object will now be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, andthe features of novelty will then be pointed out inthe ap- In said drawings Fig. l'is a perspective view of a brooch provided with my invention; Fig. 2 is an elevation of one form of the securing device or holder, in the open position; Fig. 3 shows the same device in the closed position, with the pin in section; Fig.
l is a section on line 44 of Fig. 2, and Figs- 5, 6, and 7, are sections on the lines 55, 6 6, and 77 respectively of Fig. 3; Fig.
8 is a vicw'corresponding to Fig. 2 and showing a second form of. my invention;
Fig. 9 shows the'same form as it appears when looking in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 8; Fig. 10 is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing a third form of myinvention; Fig. 11 shows the same form as seen when looking in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 10; Figs; 12 and 13 are views, partlyin sec tion, illustrating a fourth form of my invention, in the open and the closedposition respectively; and Fig. 14 is a section on the line 1t14 of Fig. 1 r
In each of the forms shown, the device comprises two parts, vine-First, aholder proper adapted to be secured, say bysoldering, to the base A or other suitable portion of the article to which the invention is to be applied, for instance a brooch, as in Fig. 1...
and adapted to lock in position, the pin B of the brooch or other article;
According to my invention, the holder is made from a tubular piece of metal 20, of uniform cross section, which may be circular (see Fig. 7), although cross sections of other shape might be employed. By cutting, sawing, stamping, or any other appropriate operation, I form in such tube 20, a socket 21 with a narrowed entrance 22 through which the pin B may pass. This entrance is adapted to be closed or cleared by the looking device connected movably with said tubular holder body. The tubular construction of this body, besides giving it great strength, presents additional advantages as follows, irrespective of whether such body is used with or without 'a locking device: First, the endwhich is fitted to the base A.
can be cutoff readily to any length required,
end or attaching end of the holder body can be changedin cross sectional shape easily by compressionor pinching, or otherwise, so as to conform to the shape of the base A, and particularly'to-the width of suchbase; for instance, if'the tube is originally of circular cross section (as in Fig. 7), its attaching end can'be given readily a different cross section, say an oval one, by pressing this end with a pair of pliers.
The features described so far are shared in common by all the forms of my invention shown herein.
Referring now more particularly to the constructions shown in Figs. 1 to 11 inclusive, the invention comprises a sliding locking. device movable in suitable parallel tubular guides 23, 23 extending to the outer or free end of the holder body 20. In each of these cases the locking device is shown as comprising a =U-shaped portion made of wire (preferably circular in cross section), the parallel end members 24., 24 sliding in the guides 23, 2-3 respectively, with a fit which is suiiiciently tightto prevent accidental-movement of the locking device. The said device further comprises a plate 25,
nected with the wire rigidly (soldering may be resorted to) and also forms a handle for the convenient manipulation of the locking device. The member 24 is adapted to close or clear the entrance 22, according as the locking device is in its inner or in its outer position.
Diiferent expedients may be employed to limit the outward movement of the sliding locking device of Figs. 1 to 11. For instance, in the construction illustrated by Figs. 1 to 7, the member 24; (distant from the entrance 22) may have its end formed into a stop by bending it inwardly, that is to say, toward the closing member 24, as indicated at 27, to come in contact with the narrowed portion 28 of the body 20 when the locking device is brought to the outer or open position, Fig. 2. In this position, the hook or stop 27 is received within a recess or socket 28. In order that this construction may be assembled, the steps of its manufacture are as follows: WVhile the body 20 is still of uniform (say, circular) cross section from end to end, the completed locking device is inserted at the outer end of said body, and then said outer end is compressed or pinched so as to form the contraction 28 and the socket 28: as well as the two parallel tubular guides 23, 23, it being understood that at that time the stop 27 is between said contraction 28 and the base A. Of course. I might first form the contraction 2S, socket 28', and guides 23, 23', and then insert the locking device in an unfinished condition, with both members 2-1, 2% straight to their very ends, the lower end of the member 2 1' being bent subsequently to form the stop 27; but this operation is not so convenient as the one just described.
According to Figs. 8 and 9, the stop 27 is formed by bending the lower end of the member 24 outwardly and projecting it through a longitudinal guide and limiting slot 29.
Figs. 10 and 11 show the stop 27" formed by anoutward bend at the loweror free end of the closing member 2%, and preferably the guide tube or sleeve 23 is formed with a .recess 23 in which said stop finds lodg ment when the locking device is inits outer or released position, so that this stop will not form an obstruction on which thepin B might catch as it swings (on its pivot B) into the socket 21.
The operation of these forms of my invention will be understood readily. By
using the plate 25 as a handle, the person can either pull the locking device out to the 7 members 24:, 24; and the guide sleeves 23,
23 being sufiicient to hold the locking device against accidental motion, in'either position.
In Figs. 12, 13, and 1 1 the parts 20,21, and 22 are substantially the same as described above (except that the tubular body 20 is shown compressed to a form which is oval and almost flat in cross section, see Fig. 14.), but instead of the sliding lock, I have shown a locking device or lever 30, 31 pivoted to the'holder body 20 about an axis 32 transverse to the length of said body. The arm 30 of the lever forms a handle for operating the locking device, while the arm 31, when swung into the position Fig. 12, leaves the entrance 22 open to admit the pin 13, whereupon said arm is brought to the looking position, Fig. 13, in which it engages the inner surface of the tube 20, being stopped thereby. In this construction also, friction is relied upon to prevent accidental movement of the locking device.
I claim as my invention:
