Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,022, dated July 22, 1873; application filed May 29, 1873.

v To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WM. It. WALTON, of Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

This invention is adapted for use in connection with the ordinary wash-tub; and consists mainly of an independent .circular base provided withrollers, and a ribbed follower adapted to rotate upon the base, as will be fully described hereinafter.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to," describe fully its construction and manner of operation.

A represents a circular base, adapted in form and size to be placedin a wash-tub of the usualwell-known construction. B represents a central standard rising from the base, the lower end of which is provided with an enlargement, b, and Vits upper end with a socket, b', as shown. C C represent rollers radiating regularly from the center, as shown, the inner ends of which are supported in the enlargement?) and the outer ends in bearingstandards c rising from the base. D D represent short rollers, centrally located in the space between the outer ends of the long rollers C, the inner ends of which are supported in suitable blocks, of proper form, attached to the base, and their outer ends in bearingstandards rising from the base, as shown. The operation of my improved washer is substantially as follows:

The base A is placed in a tub with a suitable quantity of water and soap, and the soiled clothing laid thereon. The follower is then slipped down upon the standard and its pin t' inserted in the socket of the standard B. This operation brings the follower down upon the clothing, which consequently lies between it and the base A. A proper movement forward and back being then given to the follower, the clothing. is carried, by means of it, over the revolving and stationary surfaces of the base A, and thus thoroughly cleansed.

It will be observed that by means of the ribbed construction of the follower the clothing is grasped and held by it to a certain extent, and thus carried in its movement over the revolving and stationary rubbers upon the base, by which means the wasllin g action in hand manipulation is closely imitated.

By means of the pin t' and socket in standard B the follower is held accurately in place, whether there is a greater or less quantity of 'clothing in the tub.

The advantages of the described construcltion are quite maidrcd. The mechanism is simple in construction. It can. be used with the ordinary washtub. It can be removed from the tub after using, and be easily cleansed and dried.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

I. In the base A, the combination of the rolling rubbing-surfaces C D and the stationary rubbing-surfaces E, as described.

2. The combination of the follower, constructed substantially as described, and the `base A having theI rolling and stationary rubbingsurfaces, as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The described machine, consisting of the base A, standard B, rollers C D, rubbingblocks E, ribbed follower F, standards g y',

Vcross-bar h, and pin i, combined and arranged as described, for the purpose set forth.
