Patented Mar. 21-, 1922.
7 Application filed November 15, 1920. Serial 170,424,315
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Euro M. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washin ton, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Tool Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in tool supporting devices, more especially to such devices attached to the person.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, easy to operate and may be readily attached to the clothes of the operator.
These and other objects will appear as my invention is hereinafter more fully set forth in the following specification, shown in the accompanying drawings and finally pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the holder,
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the holder showing the device in a closed or locked position.
Fig. 3 is a section upon the line 3-3 in Fig. 2, a hammer also being shown in dotted lines, retained in the said holder.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary section on the line 44 in Fig. 2, a hammer also being shown in dotted lines, retained in the said holder.
My improved device comprises a body portion consisting of a wire 10 having the lower ends 11 thereof extending from the longitudinal portion bent upwardly as in Fig. 4 for the reception of a tool. The body portion 10 is preferably adapted to be attached to some convenient part of the workmans apparel such as his belt, or the waist line of his trousers, by screws 12 passing through a metal clip 13, revolubly mounted on the horizontal portion of the wire 10 and nuts 14.
15 is a plate whose longitudinal edges are turned inwardly around the longitudinal portions of the wire 10, said wire being journaled in the said formed edges generally shown at 16. Disposed near the upper edge of the plate 15 and in the central part thereof is a struck out portion 17, which is crimped around the lateral portion of a wire formed jaw 18, whose ends are formed with an offset 19, abutting the late 15 as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 and the en. s thereof passing through holes 20 in the plate 15, said ends bemgturned downwardly, thereby making the said wire jaw rigid to the plate 15.
21 1s a tension spring. whose one end is attached to the plate 15 in any suitable manner, generally shownat-22 in Fig. 1 and whose other extremity is in the form of a hook 23,which passes through an eye 24, at one endof a link25, theother end of. the link being revolubly attached to the horizontal portion of the wire 10. In the clip 13 there is a cut-out portion 26 which receives the link25. 27 is a U formed spring which rigidly attached .to the plate 15 by the struck out portions of the plate 15 which are crimped, as indicated at 28, around the lateral portion of the said spring. Near the bottom ends of the longitudinal portions of the spring 27 there are bent out portions 29, the extreme ends of the said spring being formed so as to provide suitable finger grips 30. To keep the spring 27 from moving outwardly from the plate 15, there has been provided struck out portions 31 whose free ends pass over the longitudinal portion of the said spring. Extending from the lower end of the longitudinal edges of the plate 15 and integral therewith are jaws 32 as shown in the solid lines in Figs. 3 and 4. In dotted lines in Figs. 3 and 4 is a hammer 33. Intermediate the jaw 32 and the turned edge 16 is a cut-out portion of the edge 16 which partially encircles the wire 10 as shown at 34 in Figs. 3 and 4.
In the operation of a device as herein described, it can readily be seen that when a tool has been inserted in the holder as in Fig. 3 and the said, tool moved downwardly against the auxiliary jaws 32 which it will be remembered are integral with the slidable locking jaw 18, to move said jaw downwardly a pre-determined distance at which time the bent-out portion 29 of the U spring 27 comes into engagement with the bottom side of the portions '11 of the wire 10 as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, thereby retaining embodiment oi my invention, I amjawane that many minor changes therein will.
and scope of my invention. I therefore desire to avoid being limited to the exact form shown and described,
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire; to, protect by Letters Patent, is:
1. A toolholder comprising a wire body portion, supportingjawsstafiionary with the said bod alockin "jaw normalrl in unlocke position and sli abl mounte on said body portion and: adap to'coact" with the, supporting jaw.
2. A tool holdercomprising a wire'body portion, tool supporting 'aws projectinv therefrom, it looking jaw idably mounted on said wire portion, and, thereby adapted to be movod'into and out of locking osition and means for retaining the said coking jaw in locked position.
3. A tool holder comprising a wire body pOIti0I1,L tool supporting jaws projecting therefrom, a locking jaw slidably mounted on said Wire body portion, and thereby adapted to be moved into and out of locking position and means for retaining the said locking jaw in locked position, including a sprinq member. 7 r. 1 H 4. 3 tool holder comprising a wire body portion, means for attaching the same to a garment, tool supporting jaws projecting from the body portion, a locking jaw normally in unlocked position and slidably- 1n testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence ofltwo witnesses.
