To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS J. KEHOE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have, invented certain new and useful Improvements in Radiators, of which I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to removable closures, and particularly closures for use in closing the filling openings in radiators for motor vehicles.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a removable closure which is nor-- mally held in position covering the openings by means of spring tension. Another object of my invention 1s to provide a radiator cap construction such that the cap is permanently attached to the radiator, may be swung to open position without disconnecting any part, and is resiliently held in open positlon.
Further objects, and objects relating to details of construction and economies of manufacture, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means descrlbed in the followin specification. My invention is clearly efined and set forth in the appended claims. A structure constituting a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:

stantially right angles to the body thereof and is connected to the side of the nozzle 2 by means of the pintle 5, which passes through the end of the stem 4 and is carried by the yoke 11 attached to the side of the nozzle by the rivets 12. The stem 4 extends upwardly through the cap 3 and the washer 6 is secured to the upper end of the stem by the screw 7 Spring 8 is compressed between the washer 6 and the upper end of 11 cylindrical boss 9 which is formed on the cap 3. A guard or housing 10 surrounds the upper end of the stem 4 and the s ring 8, and is threadedon to the cylindrical boss 9. This guard serves to house and protect the stem 4 and the spring 8, and also serves as a handle by which the top may be swung to one side when} the filling opening is to be uncovered,
When the cap 3 is in the position shown in Figure II, the spring 8, actin on the cap 3, serves to normally press-it downwardly in engagement with the rim 2 of the nozzle 2, so that the cap is yieldingly held in engage'ment therewith. Cap 3 can be tilted or moved laterally against the tension of the spring 8 and'when the cap has been, moved to one side to uncover the opening, the spring will tend to hold the" cap 3 against t e side of the nozzle 2, as shown in Figure III. The co-operative action of the spring 8 and bent stem 4 results in the closure being positively held in either 0 orv closed position, since,--as shown in igure III when the stem istilted from its normal upright osition, the base of the closure is pressed rmly against the outer side of the nozzle 2 and the closure held at one side of the nozzle opening, while, as shown in Figure II, when the stem is in upright position, the closure is clamped firmly upon the rim tached to the radiator and is always held in.

In Figures V to VIII inclusive, I have shown a modified form of my invention in which a downwardly curved yoke 14 is secured inside the nozzle 2. This yoke is provided with a central slot 15, as appears from Figures VI and VIII. The cap 17 has the stem 16 slidably mounted therein, and is provided at its upper end wit-h a handle 22. Yoke 20 is fastened to the cap 17 and provided with a central opening through which the stem 16 passes and the spring 21 is compressed between said yoke 20 and a shoulder 19 formed on the stem 16. A bar 23 extends downwardly and laterally from the stem 16, passing through the slot 15 in the yoke 14, and said bar is provided at its upper end with shoulders 24 which are adapted to engage notches 25 formed in the edges of the opening 15 in the yoke 14. A flat leaf spring 26 is secured to said bar 23 by the screws 27 and is adapted to engage the edge of the opening 15, when the top is raised to open position, the end of said spring being rovided with a laterally bent portion 28 w ich serves to hook the edge.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a nozzle, a stem pivotally connected to said nozzle, a closure for such nozzle mounted upon said stem and slidable bodily with respect thereto, and spring means between said stem and said closure yieldingly holding said closure in place on said nozzle. 7
2. Ina device of the class described, the combination of a nozzle, a stem pivotally connected to said nozzle, a closure for said nozzle mounted upon said stem and slidable bodily with respect thereto, a shoulder on Said stem, and a coiled spring mounted on said stem between said shoulder and a part of said closure, said spring yieldingly holding said closure in position on said nozzle.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a nozzle; a closure for said nozzle, a stem extending through said closure and slidable therein; a hinge conneccombination of a nozzle; aclosure therefor;

6. In a device of the class described, the
combination of a nozzle; a closure therefor;
a stem hinged to the inner side of said nozzle on which said closure is slidably mounted; and a spring means engaging said stem and closure and tending to hold the latter yieldingly in positionon said nozzle.
'7. In a device'of the class described, the combination of a nozzle, a stem bent at substantially right-angles and pivotally mounted within said nozzle, a closure centrally mounted to slide on said stem, and means for holding the closure seated upon the nozzle.
8. In a device of the class described, the combination of a nozzle, a closure therefor, and means connecting the closure with the inner surface of the nozzle adapted to retain the closure in either open or closed position.
9. In a device of the character described, the combination of a nozzle, a stem pivoted upon the inner surface of the nozzle. a closure carried thereby, and resilient means for holding the closure in either open or closed position.
10. In a device of the class described, in combination, a nozzle, a stem pivoted upon the inner surface of the nozzle, a closure slidable thereon, and resilient means for holding the closure in open position against the side of the nozzle or in closed position upon the nozzle.
11. In a device of the class described, the combination of a nozzle, a stem having a laterally extending lower end pivoted to the nozzle interiorly thereof, and a closure for said nozzle slidable upon said stem, the parts being so PI'ODOl'tlOIlGd and arranged that said stein may be swung to horizontal position over the edge of the nozzle, and resilient means tending to hold said closure upon the end of the nozzle or against one side thereof, depending upon the position of the stem.
12. In a device of the class described, the combination of a nozzle, a substantially central stem having a laterally extending lower end pivoted to the nozzle interiorly thereof, and a closure for said nozzle slidable upon said stem, the parts being so proportioned and arranged that said stein may be swung to horizontal position over the edge of the nozzle, and resilient means tending to hold said closure upon the end of the nozzle or against one side thereof, depending upon the position of the stem.
