Application filed April 24, 1919. Serial No. 292,318.
and useful Improvements in Safes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in safes, and has for its object the provision of an improved construction of this character which may be readily transported; which is so constructed as to prevent opening the same through the force of explosions, and the Combination of which is protected from destruction or injury from the outside thereof.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consist-s in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed. y
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming ay part of this specification, and in which,
Fig. 1, is a perspective view of a safe embodying the invention, shown open,
Fig. 2. an enlarged section taken on the plane indicated by the line 2-2 on Fig. 1,
Fig. 3, a front view of the safe,
Fig. 4, a horizontal section of the same,
' and Fig. safe.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a safe made up of detachable sections, the top and bottom sections 6 and 7, respectively, being channeled at their edges to receive the upper and lower edges of the side sections 8 and the back section 9, the front of the safe being in the form of a removable hinged door410. The bottom section 7 is provided with suitable removable feet or legs 7 for supporting the same. All vof the sections are made hollow and provided with an outer chamber 11 filled with mineral wool, or the like, for fire protection, and an inner open air chamber 12 having perforations 13 leading through the inner wall thereof, into the interior of the safe, to permit of the free passage of air. The various sections are provided with securing lugs or ears 14 located on the interior of the safe and secured'in place by means of screws 15 taking into suitable posts 16, as shown, and whereby the top,
5, an enlarged vertical section of the Specification ofvLetters Patent. Patented Dray, 21, 1922,
bottom, side and rear wallsecti'ons of the safe may be detachably securedin place, but can only be detached when the safe door is open, so that access'may be had to ,the heads of the screws 15. In this way ample rsecurity is afforded against unauthorized opening'of the safe, but` at' the same time, the safe,
whenl opened, may be readily taken'apart for convenience in transportationf Hollow' blow-out plugs 17 are secured in the outer wals of the safe sectionsv lea-ding into the air chambers thereof, the Outer walls of said blow-out plugs beingv sutiif ciently weak and fragile to cause the same to fracture or break upon the generation Avof excessive pressure within the safe, tlius permittingof thc escape ofsuch pressure. VIn
this way, in case an attempt made to blow the safe, andopen the 'same by theJ Y use of explosives, theinternal pressure gen,- erated by the explosive will servetovfracture the various blow-out plugs and*thiisdissi-z pate the pressure without blowingv open the door of the'safe. v
The door of the'safe lis provided with-the usual locking bolt or bolts operated by the handle 18, said bolts being in turn controlled in the usual manner by the usual disc 19 of the usual combination lock. This disc 19, instead of being provided with the usual handle for manipula-ting the same, is set or mounted within a casing 20 imbedded within the wall of the door 10,v said disc being mounted flush with the outer surface of the door so as to protect the same and prevent ready injury thereto. The disc is provided with a keyfsocket 20, positioned centrally therein as shown, and whereby a key may be inserted therein for turning the same but no material force may be applied t0 the disc or the combination through said key. This arrangement prevents the effective application of force from the outside to the'combination of the safe, thus further protecting the same from unauthorized tampering.' Y
While I have illustrated and described the sus,Y
preferred form of construction for carrying i precise details of construction'set forth, but
desire to avail myself of such variations and modificationsas come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention,` what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l 1. A safe having hollowfwalls" compris ing inner and outer chambers, the Walls of sald inner chambers being provided with openings for the circulation of air toward thelinteriebrf` ofll thei` safe blow-out" plugs mounted in openings extending through the outer chambers and terminating Within said inner chambers, permitting escape of com pressed air and gases from said inner eham bers .or from the jinter-ior of the safe tothe exterior thereof; and protective filling materialwithin-said outer chambers,` substantially as described.
` 2. A safe ha 'ng detachable hollow `walls comprising innerfvand outerfehambers, said innerehambersibeing in `open communica tion with-the interior ofthe safegfblow-out plugsV mounted in` openings extending through the outer chambersand terminating within said inner i-ehambers, said plugs `having-fragile topspermitting escape of gases 2yiindery excessive pressure-firom` said inner chambers or-ffrom i the interior of the safe tothe exteriorthereof; and I neans` accessible only from the interior of the safeffor fasten'- ing listaid inner and outer Aehambersand said walls together, substantially asdeseribed.
3. .A safethavingicompeund hollow -walls comprising'inner andouterchambers, lthe ini ward walls of said inner chambers being provided with a plurality of rows of openings for the Circulation of air toward the inlterior 'of the' "saiegfland blow-out plugs mounted in openings extending through both i walls ofthe outer Chambers, said plugs termi Ahating Within said inner Chambers and being `provided `with fragile tops permitting es- Capel of air and gases under excessive pressure from the interior of the safe or from said inner chambers to the exterior of they safe, `substantially asV described.
,4. `A safe having hollow Walls 'forming superposed air chambers, there being a multitude of openings in the walls between said air chambersand the interior of said safe:
blow-outplugs `mounted in the side WallsV safe and inner air chambers, upon genera-i tionof Yan excessive. pressure Within said safe; and threaded members engaging the three walls ofsaid superposed lChambers for holding-said Walls together, substantially as described. A In testimony whereof I have signedmy name to this speoiiieation inthe presence of :two subscribing witnesses.
