Description

A. C. PAYSON.
VALVE SEAT sUREACnVG DEVICE. PPLICATION FILED JULY I2, 1920.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR o. PAYsoN, oFMILAN, ILLINOIS.
VALVE-SEAT-SURFACING DEVICE.
'ittf Application filed July 12,
To oiZZ whom t mary cof/worn.'
Be it known that I, ARTHUR C, PAYsoN a citizen of the United States, residing at ilan, in the county ofRock Island and State of Illinois, havefinvented a certain new .and useful Improvement in- Valve-Seat-Surfacing Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, concisa/and vexact description, reference being had :to the accompanying drawings, forming a part fof this specification.
rllhis invention relates to improvements in valve seat surfacing devices.
One object of the invention is to provide a device for quickly and accurately surfacing valve seats, especially'those of internal combustion engines employing poppet valves.
Another Object of the invention is to provide a device of' the character indicated which is of simple construction, portable, directly applicable to the engine cylinder and which is provided with means for positively insuring that the valveseat will be trued or surfaced accurately with respect to the usual valve stein and guide therefor.
@ther objects of the invention will more clearly appear from the description herein-` after following.
ln the 'drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the improved valve seat surfacing device ernbodying my invention. find Figure 2 is a vertical sectional' view corresponding substantially to the line 22 of Figurel and showing the manner in which the device is used.
ln said drawing, the improved valve seat surfacing device is shown as embodying a fra-me or suitable standard A' having a bottoni flange 10, the latter being provided with a plurality of peripherally spaced radially extending slots 11 so that the device may be bolted or clamped to an engine cylinder12 as by means of the bolts 13. As will be understood by those skilled in the art, the slots 11 will lbe so located as to correspond .with the bolts commonly found on internal. combustion cylinders to hold the cylinder head in place.
The frame or standard A is provided with a centrally disposed vertically extending opening which provides upper and lower bearings 14e-1li for a vertically arranged shaft 15., rfheshaft has keyed thereto, at the top of the standard il, a worin gear 16, said Terin gear being enclosed in housing' partly by the A and by Specification of Letters Patent. Patented iwal. 14, 1922.,
1920. Serial No. 395,580.
`on its under side as indicated at 22 to accommodate a suitable cutter 23, the active edges of which are `inclined at an angle corresponding Vto the angle of the valve seat 24 in the cylinder. The lower end of the shaft 15 is headed or flanged as indicated at 25 so as to hold up the cutter which is slipped down over the shaft 15 before the latter is applied within the frame A. rl`he lower end of the shaft 15 is made of slight-ly larger diameter than the main portion thereof and immediately above the cutter 23 is threaded as indicated at 26 to accommodate a. lock nut 27 which holds the cutter down in place as the 8o cutter and sha-ft are fed axially, in the manner hereinafter described. rEhe cutter is prevented frorn rotating with respect to the Shaft 15 by a suitable key 28.
The frame A-and cover plate 17 are pro c vided with laterally' extended cooperating curved flanges 29-29 which together form a cylindrical housing for a worm 30 mounted on a horizont-ally extending shaft 31. Said curved portions 29, at the opposite ends of 'e the worm housing, provide bearings for the shaft 31, as indicated at 32 and said carries collars 33-83, pinned or otherwise rigidly secured thereto in order 'to prevent longitudinal movement of the shaf. 9 ends of the shaft are squared as indicated 3i or made of other noncircular form so as adapt the shaft 3,1 for rota-tion by a brace or socket wrench.
The cover plate 1 is provided with an arm 35 which entends upwardly and then horizontally as indicated at 36, the saine ing threaded as indicate at 37 to cooperate with a feed screw 38, the lower end of which operate with a correspon of the shaft 15. screw 38 is provi i through which 1510 to facilitate rota valve seat be ground true or perfectly square with the cylinder, which is accomplished by clamping my device directly to the cylinder, but also it is necessary that the valve seat be trued With respect to the usual valve stem guide opening 40 indicated in Figure 2. In order to insure this result, I provide what may be termed a pilot or guide rod 41 Which is adapted to extend through the valve stem guide 40 and will of course conform in size to the usual valve stem. Said guide or pilot rod 4l is detachably connected tothe shaft 15 axially thereof by having the upper end of the rod extend in a corresponding socket 42 formed in the shaft 15. Said pilot rod is prevented from rotation by said key 28 which extends through the Wall of the shaft 15 into a corresponding key slot 43 in the pilot rod 41. To prevent the pilot rod from dropping down accidentally into the cylinder, it may be vsupplied with an adjustable collar 44 held in position by a set screw 45.
From the preceding description, it will be seen that my device may be applied directly to the cylinders in which the valve seats are to be resurfaced and on account of the manner of attaching the device directly to the cylinder and by employing the guide or pilot rod, I am enabled to insure a true and accurately finished valve seat both with respect to the cylinder and the stem of the valve intended to cooperate with the valve seat. As will be obvious to those skilled in the art, cutters or other suitable surfacing vtools of different sizes may be employed and the same is true With respect to the pilot rod 41. Rotation of the surfacing tool is readily effected manually through the shaft 31, Worm and Worm gear, heretofore described. The advancement of the cutter or other snrfacing tool, axially, is effected manually by adjusting the screw 38. rIhe device as an entirety is simple, compact, comprised of few parts and may be manufactured at comparatively small expense. f
I have herein shown and described what I nowconsider the preferred manner of carrying out the invention, but the same is merely illustrative and I contemplate all changes and modifications that come Within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. In a valve seat surfacing device of the character indi-cated, the combination with a frame member adapted to be rigidly attached to the engine cylinder having the valve seat to be treated and a valve stem guide; of a surfacing tool rotatably mounted on said member and in position to act upon the valve seat; means for effecting rotation of said tool; means, cooperable with said tool and said valve stem guide, for centering said tool With respect to the valve stem guide; and means carried on said frame member for feeding said surfacing tool axially in a direction toward the valve seat.
2. In a valve seat surfacingr device of the character indicated, the combination with a frame member having a fiat bottom adapted to be secured directly'to a cylinder; of a vertically extending shaft journaled in upper and lower bearings in said frame. member, whereby the shaft is restrained to rotation about an axis fixed with respect to the frame member; a surfacing tool carried at the lower end of said shaft and adapted to engage and act upon the valve seat; and means for effecting rotation of said shaft and tool.
3. In a valve seat surfacing device of the character indicated, the combination with a frame member having a fiat bottom adapted to be secured directly to a cylinder; of a vertically extending shaft j ournaled in said frame member and adjustable axially thereof; a surfacing tool carried at the lower end of said shaft and adapted to engage and act upon the valve seat; means for effecting rotation of said shaft and tool; and means mounted on said frame member for feeding said shaft axially in a direction toward the valve seat.
4. In a valve seat surfacing device of the character indicated, the combination with a frame member adapted to be directly positioned on the end of a cylinder having a valve seat to be treated; of a shaft j ournaled in said member and extending vertically therein; a surfacing tool carried by the lower end of said shaft and rotatable in unison therewith; a pilot rod extending from the lower end of said shaft and detachably secured thereto; means for effecting rotation of the shaft and tool including gearing mounted in said frame member; and a feed screw carried by said member and adapted to cooperate With the upper end of the shaft to advance the same axially.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name.
ARTHUR C. PAYSON.
