Be it known that I, Tnnrs 1*. BERNARD, a citizen of the United States, and residing at the city of Detroit county of Wayne, and the tiltate of Michigan, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Me chanical Devices for Grinding Two Cylindrical Machine Parts at the Same Time and declare the following to be a full, clear and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make use of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
The objects of my invention are, to provide a means whereby two cylindrical pieces may be ground at the same time; to provide proper adjustment of the parts to the axis of the grinding wheel; and to grind pieces of different diameters at the same time.
This is accomplished by mounting a sec ondary grinding spindle di ectly above the primary grinding spindle both being driven by a common power wheel so as to rotate in the opposite direction to that of the grinding wheel. The secondary spindle being mounted on an adjustable frame to allow the upper cylindrical part to be brought in contact with the grinding wheel, and with. a horizontal adjustment to take care of the various lengths of pieces to be ground. j
It is a further object of the invention to secure a device that is simple in construction, effective in its operation, and can be easily and accurately controlled and ad; justed. These several objects aresecured in the preferred form by the construction and arrangement of parts as are hereinafter more fully described.

I. will now describe more fully the working parts of the device, referring to the accompanying drawings and the marks thereon.
The entire device is mounted upon a swivel base 1, and 2, which are pivoted together at the center by pin 3. Both base plates are to be securely clamped to the horizontal table of the grinding machine, by clamps at the end thereof, as is indicated in Fig. 1. At the power end of the grinder head, the upper base plate 2, carries a solid bearing (4:) thereon and securely fastened thereto. At the opposite end of the top base plate 2, is an adjustable bearing 5, which is securely clamped thereto by means of bolts 6, to allow for a general adjustment of the entire head for grinding cylinders of various lengths. Mounted upon the stationary hearing 1, is an-adjustable bearing 7, carryin a secondary driving'spindle 8. Bearing 1 is pivoted to hearing 4 by means of a cylindrical sleeve 9 which passes through both bearings 1 and 7 and allows the latter to rock back and forth thereon. Bearing 1 also carries within the sleeve 9, the primary grinding spindle 10, which is within and splined to the hollow gear shaft 11. The keys 19 and 20 allow a horizontal adjustment of the driving spindle 10 and the driving center 12 by means of'the adjusting nuts 14; and 15. Gear shaft 11 is securely fastened to gear 13 and driven by a common power gear 16. Drive gear 16 is securely fastened to drive pulley 17 and rotates continuously therewith. Gear 16 and drive pulley 17 are mounted on a stub shaft 18 fastened in the adjustable bearing 7. The adjustable bearing 7 carries at the top the secondary driving spindle 8, which is within and splined. to the hollow gear shaft 21. The keys 22 and 23 allow a horizontal movement of the secondary driving spindle 8 by means of the adjusting nuts 24 and 25. Gear shaft 8 is fastened to drive gear 26 and driven by the common drive gear 16 and pulley 17. Both spindles 8 and 10 carry within the end, driving center points 12 and 27. The center points 12 and 27 are fastened to driving spindles 8 and 10 by means of a taper and a key, and revolve continuously therewith. The cylindrical work may be driven by means of a socket dog extending from the irregularcollar 28 on the driving centers 12 and 27 to the irregular head on the cylindrical work. lvlounted upon the adjustable bearing 5 is an adjustable arm 29, which is pivoted to bearing 5 by means of a cylindrical sleeve 30 and passing through both bearing 5 and arm 29, allowing arm 29 to rotate thereon for adjustment. lllounted on arm 29 and rotating about the same center, is a secondary adjustable bearing V Bearing 35 is supported by an arm carrying a secondary micrometer adjusting screw the lower end or" said screw resting upon b ing 29, and any movement of the screw give an added ;t.,,'ustment to \vllj. l bearing 35, tilting the tail centers either bacl ward or "1rd and i to perfect alinement with the lower pi mary grinding spindle. Bearing 35 carries at the top an adjustable sleeve 87 which in turn carries a tail center 38. Bearing 29 at the bottom 7 also carries an adjustable sleeve 10, which in turn carries a tail center point 41. Both sleeves 3'? and 420, have a bearings horizontal movement in the main 35 and .29, caused by the rotation 01" pinion 4-2, as lever 1-3 is raised or lowered. At the outer end of arm 29 is an adjusting slide 31 securely clamped thereto by means of a cap screw 32. and providing means horizontal adju tment of the main bearing 5. Slide 81 is also clamped to the outer end of the adjustable bearing 7 by means of a slot and a cap screw thus giving rigidity to the two adustable bearings 7 and 29, causing them to act as one frame in a solid and rigid manner. Bearing 7 carries a micrometer adjusting wheel 34 which is threaded therein and passes through the arm of bearing 7, and the lower end of which rests on the top of the base plate 2. A device of the character described in combination with the horizontal table of a grinding machine and the mtating grinding wheel, of a base fixedly attached to the horizontal table, a secondary base swiveled there to, a stationary bearing mounted on top of said base, a primary grinding spindle, means for turning same, a secondary grinding spindle with means for turning same, and placed above the primary spindle in an adjustable bearing mounted thereon, on the driving end of the spindle, a stationary bearing, a cylindrical sleeve therein to pivot the adjustable bearing on, thus allowing the upper spindle to rock about the center of the lower spindle and adjust to the surface of the grinding wheel.
5. In a machine of the character described in combination with a horizontally moving table of a grinding machine and the i'otating grinding wheel, of a compound base fixedly attached to the horizontal table of the grinder, of a primary spindle mounted there on and supported by a stationary bearing at-- tached to the base, a hollow sleeve in the driven end of the spindle, a center point securely fastened thereto rotates with the sleeve, means for a horizontal adjustment of the sleeve, a driving casing outside the cylindrical sleeve and connected thereto by sliding keys, a gear secured to the driving casing, a power gear attached to a driving pulley, and means for driving same.
6. In a device of the character described in combination with the horizontally moving table of the grinding machine and the rotating grinding wheel, of a compound base fixedly attached to the horizontal table, a primary and secondary grinding spindle mounted thereon, means for driving the same, a sliding adjustable bearing for the dead centers of the primary and secondary grinding spindles mounted on the main base, and for the purpose of adjusting the distance between the center points for long or short work, and means for adjusting the sliding bearing.
7. In a device of the character described in combination with the horizontally moving table of the grinding machine and the rotating grinding wheel, of a compound swiveled base securely attached to the horizontal table, primary and secondary grinding spindle mounted thereon, means for driving both spindles, sliding tail bearing connected to the main base, an adjusting arm pivoted to the main bearing by means of a hollow cylinder, means of connecting said adjusting arm with the adjustable bearing of the secondary driving spindle thus making the two a solid frame.

In a device of the character described in combination with the horizontally moving table of the grinding machine and the rotating grinding wheel, of a base fixedly attached to the horizontal table, a secondary base mounted thereon and swiveled therewith by a center pin, a primary and a secondary grinding spindle mounted thereon, means for driving both spindles, a sliding tail bearing connected to the main base, an adjustable arm pivoted to the mainbearing by means of a hollow cylinder, mea of connecting said adjusting arm with the adjustable bearing of the secondary driving spindle and thus making the two a solid frame, a hollow sleeve with a horizontal adjustment, a center tail point for the primary driving spindle, a coil spring within the hollow sleeve to hold the tail center in place, a stationary block within the sleeve to support the coil spring, means for holding the block in place, and means for causing the horizontal movement of the sleeve to release the tail center from the work.

In a device of the character described in combination with the horizontally moving table of the grinding machine and the rotating grinding wheel, of a compound swiveled base securely attached to the horizontal table, a primary and a secondary grinding spindle mounted on said base, means for driving both spindles, a sliding tail bearing connected to the main base, an adjustable arm pivoted to the main bearing by means of a hollow cylinder, means for connecting the adjusting arm with the adjustable bearing of the secondary driving spindle, a secondary adjustable arm mounted on top of the adjustable frame arm and pivoted about the same center of the sliding tail bearing, a hollow sleeve with a horizontal adjustment, a tail center for the secondary grinding spindle held within said sleeve, a coil spring within sleeve, a stationary block within said sleeve to support coil spring, means for holding block in place, and means for causing a horizontal movement of said sleeve to release the secondary tail center from the work.

In a device of the character described in combination with the horizontally moving table of the grinding machine and the rotating grinding wheel, of a compound base fixedly attached to the horizontal table, a primary and a secondary grinding spindle mounted thereon, means for driving both spindles, a sliding adjustable bearing connected to the main base, an adjustable arm pivoted thereto and connected with the acjustable hearing of the secondary driving spindle making it a solid frame but with means "for the adjustment thereof, a secondary adjusting arm mounted on top of the adjustable "frame arm and both pivoted to the sliding bearing by means of a cylindrical sleeve, a movable sleeve inside the cylinder carrying the tail center point for the primary grinding spindle, a movable sleeve within the adjustable arm carrying the tail center for the secondary grinding spindie, a pinion gear engaging the gear teeth on the outside or both the tail center sleeves; the center of the pinion sliding in a slot in the adjustable arm casting, a lever for rotating said pinion for releasing either of said tail centers from the work, a spot in said adjustable arm for removing the pinion and adjusting the tail center sleeves to different relative positions.
11. in a device of the character described in combination with the horizontally moving' table of the grinding machine and the rotating grinding wheel, of a compound swivel base securely attached thereto, a primary and a secondary grinding spindle mounted thereon, means for driving both oi said spindles, a sliding tail bearing connected to the main base, an adjustable arm pivoted to the main bearing by means of a hollow cylinder, means for connecting said adj usting am with the adjustable bearing of the secondary driving spindle and thus making the two a solid frame, a micrometer adjusting screw connected to this frame and resting on the main base, and means for holding the screw from turning.
12. In a device of the character described in combination with the horizontally moving table of the grinding machine and the rotating grinding wheel, of compound swiveled base securely attached to the horizontal table, a primary and a secondary grinding spindle mounted thereon, means for driving both spindles, a sliding tail bearing connected to the main base, an adjustable arm pivoted to the main bearing, means for connecting said adjustable arm with the adjustable bearing of the secondary driving spindle, a micrometer adjusting screw connected to the main frame, a pressure plug set in the said frame bearing upward against the edge of the micrometer wheel by means of the coil spring under the plug, by turning the inicroineter screw the frame is raised or lowered to adjust the upper secondary grinding spindle to the grinding wheel.
