Specification of Letters Patent.-
TYPEWRITER.
Patented Mar. 14, 1922.
serial No. 356,942.
(GRANTED UNDER THE PROVISIONS 0F THE ACT 0F MARCH 3, 1921, 41 STAT. L., 1313.)
To all whom @'25 may concer/L:
Be it known that I, CHARLES Louis TAN- Niin, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Merton, county oi Surrey, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in "l`ypewritersr` (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 124,881, dated ld .;\pril, Vlllt) ot' which the following is :i specilication.
lily invention relates to typewriters of the kind in which the material to be typed on is moved transversely of the machine when typingfis carried in a vertical position, and is shifted vertically for line spacing.
illy invention has for its object the im- -proved construction, combination and arrangement of a machine of the above nature which will enable a ledger, book, pad, or the like to be typed on.
For a clear understanding oi' the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying sheets of drawin gs` wherein Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of al machine constructed in accordance with the invention, but with ribbon mechanism omitted.
Figure 2 is a front view of the machine.
Figure 3 is a front view of the skeleton frame platen`I shown detached.
Figure f1 is a .plan view ot the carriage end of the machine. -Y
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
In carrying out my invention, and referring to the drawings, behind that part a of the machine frame carrying the type bars b, only one of which is shown in the drawings, and the ribbon mechanism c (which typebars 7) have an upward and forward movement imparted to them by an arrangement of levers. links and keys b1, b2. b3) there is provided a vertically disposed skeleton frame or carriage d, d1. slidably mounted on, so as to be traversed along'` a horizontal and transversely disposed bar d2, fixedly carried by brackets (Z3 on transversely disposed track plate Z5 on the base a) of the machine` and supported by means of rollers d* which bear on the transversely disposed plate d5 on said base a1, said rollers d* being carried by the lower part of the carriage d, (l1.
The carriage r1. di. at each end` and'towards the top thereof, is provided with rollers d which take on a transversely disposed lat bar e attached to the ymachine `frame a to guide and support the carriage ,cll.
The ends oi' the carriage cl, Z1 are constituted by vertically disposed grooves or guideways f for the reception therebetween of a Hat and. skeleton frame platen g, which platen g in turn is provided with vertical end grooves or guideways g1 for the reception therein of the edges of an open book g2, as shown in Figure 2. or a pad g3, as shown in Figure l, which is slid downwards on the platen f/ till stopped by engaging in a hook-shaped ledge g4 on the bottom end of the platen g.
The leaves of the book g2 are maintained fiat by the edges of the grooves or guideways f/l of the platen g, and by a flat bar h, Figure 2, which engages by its upper end in a slot 72,1 of a slotted and hinged gate 71,2 in the hook-shaped ledge g4 on the top of the platen trame g, and by its lower end in one ot two slots 71,3 in the hook-shaped ledge 'r/t on the bottom end of said platen Ytrame g, the bar h being shifted to the one or the other side of the centre of the book f/2, according to which side of the book is to be typed on,r said book being held against the flat bar 7L and the edges of the grooves or guideways g1 by means of blade springs v1, which springs z' are attached to the skeleton framed platen g.
The carriage el, d1 `which is connected to the spacer rack 2, is released by the movement of the space key 3 which, through rock bar i, actuates the detents i5 which engage the ratchet wheel i", the carriage d, d1 being drawn along in known manner, and a column-finder release key, not shown in the drawings, is arranged on the left side of the machine frame.
To effect the vertical movement of the book` pad or the like, i. e. line spacing, the right hand edge of the platen frame g is provided with a vertically disposed line spacer rack 0*. with which engages the spring-controlled pawl g pivotally mounted on a bracket 1' forming part ofthe frame of the carriage d. d1, a spring-controlled detent or pawl o pivotally mounted on the downwardly extending portion i1 of the bracket 7' on the frame of the carriage, en- Q'aging in said line spacer rack o, preventing downward movement of the platen 7 till said detent or payvl g3V is released by hand.
The left hand groove or guideway g1 ofthe platen g 1s made adjustable, for in# carriage and engaging said rail, a frame Vplaten slidab'ly-mounte`d in the said guide- Ways and having vertical grooves for receiving an article to be Written upon, oneof the grooves being adjustable, a Vhook shaped slotted ledge at the bottom of thev platen, a hinged and slotted gate at the top thereof, a bar for engaging with said ledge and gate,
andmeans associated With the platen for effecting line spacing.
In testimony Whereotl I have aixed my signature, hereto this 30th day of December,
' CHARLES LOUIS TANNER.
