relates to new and useful posts and particularly to This invention improvements in fence posts. j I
ne object of the invention is to provide a post in which the greater part of the portion which is exposed to the weather 1s formed from molded plastic material.
Another object is to provide a fence post of this character which is adapted topartially enclose a wooden post portion, to which wooden portion fence wires or runners are to be secured, and which enclosing portion may be quickly and easily taken apart to permit the removal of the deteriorated wooden portion, and the substitution of a new one.
.Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is perspective view of a fence post made in accordance with the invention, and in proper assembled position.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal central sectional view of the post.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing the post comprises a base ll, a wooden post B. to which the fence 1s adapted to be secured, an enclosing molded plastic shell 0, and a cap D. i The base A is in the form of in the ground to a depth approximately the height of the box. The upper portions of the surrounding walls of the box are rabbeted internally, as shown at 10.
Disposed with. its lower end portion with in the box, and with its major portion projecting vertically therefrom, is a wooden post portion B, the same being shown as rectangular in cross section, but may be circular or any other outline desired.
The shell C includes the side walls 11, and the rear wall 12, and arranged in rectangular formation to embrace the wooden portion B on three of its sides, the lower end a box, buried Specification of imminent. Patented Mar. 14, 1922.
1921. Serial No. 466,177.
of the shell being seated within the rabbet of the base A. Formed on the outer faces of the walls 11 and 12, a short distance above the lower end of the shell, are the ribs 13 which have the depending flanges l4, spaced outwardly from the walls a distance equal to or slightly greater than the thickness of the rabbeted portion of the base A, and arranged to engage outwardly of said rabbeted portion.
The cap D includes the rectangular plate 15 having the depending flanges 16, for en gagement outwardly of the upper ends of the walls of the shell, and of the exposed face of the wooden portion. The plate 15 has the upwardly tapering projection 17, on its upper face which terminates in a spherical or other ornament 18. It will be noted that, while the upper end of the wooden portion B extends upwardly into the cap, the flange depends outwardly of the shell, thus holding the parts together at their upper ends.
he outer surfaces of the plastic portions of the post may be painted, glazed, or otherwise coated to preserve them. and to add to the attractiveness of the post.
lVhen the wooden portion becomes so docomposed as to be useless, the cap D is removed, and the shell C lifted from the base, thus permitting the ready removal of the wooden portion. The new wooden portion is then inserted in the shell and the parts reassembled to assume the positions shown in Figure 1.
lVhat is claimed is:
fence post comprising a base in the form of a box having one end and one side open and having the upper ends of its side walls internally rabbetted, a wooden post member disposed in the box and projecting through and beyond the open end of the box, a shell including side and rear Walls embracing the wooden post member on three sides and having its lower end seated in the rabbet of the box, the shell having externally arranged and depending flanges embracing the rabbeted portion of the box outwardly thereof, and a cap member embrac ing the upper end of the shell and the wooden post member.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
