ADVERTISING DEVICE.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 7, 1922.
Application filed November 11, 1920. Serial No. 423,341.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, GLENN ELwIN BOWEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Whittier, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification:
This invention is an advertising device employed in connection with automobiles, and has for its object the provision of an illuminated sign adapted to be mounted upon the radiator cap of the automobile.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a lam housing for such an illuminated sign w ich supports spot lights so arranged as to project rays of light downwardly on to the road at the respective sides of the automobile. l
The inventionwill be readily understood from the following description of the ac' companying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device constructed in accordance with 'the invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 2 2 of Figure 1.
lIn the drawings the radiator cap for an automobile is shown at 1, and the advertising device forming the subject matterof this application consists of a lamp housing 2 supported by the cap 1.
The lamp housing 2 preferably comprises a back 3 having an annular rim i4. The front op'en end of the lamp housing is shown at 5 and is preferably closed by a translucent plate 6 held in position by means of a beadin 7.
The illumination for the sign is preferably provided by a usual incandescent 1 1 ht bulb 8 mounted in a usual socket 9 provi ed within casing 2 upon the back 3. Suitable advertising or displaying matter may be displayed upon the translucent plate 6 as shown at 6a so that an illuminated sign is formed.
lLamp housing 2 may be mounted upon the cap 1 by means of a supporting standard 10 depending from the rim 4, and suitably connected to cap 1. This connection may be either a detachable connection wherein support 10 isbolted to cap 1, or the cap and lamp housing may be connected by welding the support to the cap.
Spot lights are carried by lamp housing 2 at opposite sides of the same, and are so arranged that when the lamp housing is in position upon the radiator cap, the rays of light from the respective Spot lights will be projected downwardly at opposite sides of the automobile. These spot lights each include a usual reflecting surface 11 extending outwardly from rim 4 and supporting a 'usual lamp socket 12 at the base of the same.
Electrical conductors 16 extend to the respective lamp sockets 9 and 12, and may unite in a common cord which projects outwardly from the lamp housing through a suitable aperture 17 provided in the back 3.
It will thus be seen that I have provided an ornamental attachment for a radiator cap, which affords convenient means of displaying advertising matter, and which is also adapted to provide spot lights for illuminating the road at the sides of the automobile.
Various changes may be made in the construction as thus set forth without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
The combination with the radiator cap of an automobile, of a lamp vhousing for forward illumination or advertising display mounted thereon and having spot lights at the sides thereof arranged to project light downwardly to the road at the side of the automobile.
In testimony whereof I have signed my 1 name to this specification.
GLENN ELwiN BOWEN.
