Be it known that I, GUs'rAvE HQ JANTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wyoming, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wringers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wringers of the character of those employing opposed wringer-rolls between which the goods are arranged to be passed for expressing the water. 1
It is the object of my invention to provide new and improved means whereby the pposed rolls between which the goods are arranged to pass, may be instantlyseparated for preventing injury eitherto the goods or to the operator; further, to provide a breakdown frame for a wringer; further, to construct the frame of the machine in a plurality of parts and provide mounting means on the respective parts for the wringer-rolls, and means whereby movement is obtained of one frame-part with relation to the other for relieving the pressure between the wringer rolls; and, further, to provide such means in such manner that the tensioning means acting to cause pressure between the wringerrolls form a partof one of said frame-parts.
It is the object of my invention, further, to provide novel means whereby to permit separation between the wringer-rolls when the wringer is to be idle, orto prevent accident to the goods or to the user, or'to relieve pressure in case of accident.
The invention will be further readily understood from the following description and claims, and from the drawings, in which latter:

The lower or base part of the Wringerframe 18 exemplified at 21, and may be provided with suitable means for attaching the wringer to a support. These means may be suitable well-known clamping means for attaching the same direct to a tub or a powerdriven washing machine, but I have preferred to show the lower wringer-frame provided with pedestals 22, having base-flanges 23, through which suitable screws or-bolts may pass for attaching to a suitable support. The pedestals are connected by a cross-rod 24, suitably secured to each of said pedestals, as by providing the cross-rod with reduced threaded ends 25, passing through holes in lugs 26 on the respective pedestals, the pedestals being clamped thereto between shoulders on said cross-rod and nuts 27 screwed over said threaded ends.
The lower or attaching frame-section comprises suitable bearings 31, in which the shaft 32 of the lower wringer-roll 33 is arranged to rotate. The lower shaft 32 may be extended, for receiving a suitable turning means thereover for either power or manual operation. I have exemplified power driven operating means, shown as a bevel-gear 34, suitably secured to the shaft 32 for turning the same, and suitably driven.
A movable section of the wringer-frame may be movably arranged with relation to the attaching frame-section. The movable frame-section comprises bearings 36, in which the shaft 37 of the upper wringenroll 38 is arranged to rotate.
Driving means may be the shafts, if desired, an by providing the shaft 32 at each end of the roll 33 with a cog-wheel 41 fixed to said shaft, and by providing the shaft 37 at each end of its roll with a cog-wheel 42,. The cog-wheels are preferably provided with two sets of interengaging comparatively deep teeth, in usual manner, for maintaining driving relation between the rolls throughout the usual cooperative positions of the rolls when goods, clothes, or the like, are being passed between the same, for expressing water or moisture therefrom. Suitable gear-covers 44, 45, may be provided. They may be suitably secured to the respective bearings 36, 31, as by screw and nut connecarovided between d are exemplified.

I have found it desirable to permit separation between the rolls, for instance, when the operator has finished the use of the machine and the same is to be idle for a time, and especially to prevent accident to the goods or to the operator, or to relieve pressure in case of accident, for instance, for permitting separation between the rolls when the goods are becoming bunched, or buttons are being fed while extending crossand injury to the hair or part. of the clothes of the operator between the rolls to prevent danger-of having the same drawn etween the rolls, and to release the same. Such separating means are especially desirable when an electric or other power is em loyed for rotating the wringer-rolls.

In the present exemplification, I have provided springs 51, which are arranged to exert pressure between the rolls, and interpose these springs between two parts of the movable section of the wringer-frame, one of the latter parts being pivoted to the relathe fingers or tively stationary section of the wringerframe, and the other of the latter parts arranged to support the wringer-roll 38.
The lower frame-section is provided with pivot-lugs 53, and the upper frame-section comprises pivot-parts 54, from which pivotlugs 55 extend. The lower frame-member, at each end of the frame, is provided with a air of the lugs 53, between which one of the lugs 55 of the upper frame, at each end of the machine, is received, a pivot-bolt 56 being received through the pivot-holes of said lugs at each end of the frame.

Means are provided for quickly releasing the latching means. I prefer to extend these means crosswise of the machine, so that the same may be grasped at any position, and preferably arranged to be pushed or pulled at any position without an actual grasping thereof, and I prefer that the release of the latch may be had by movement of the releasing means in either of opposite directions, so that the release may be instantly and effectually accomplished.
These releasing means are shown as a lever 7 3 at each end of the frame, pivoted by a pivot 74 at each end to the lower framesection. The body of the latch may be extended. and the latch is provided with lugs 85, 88, which are at opposite positions with relation to the pivot 74:. The lever is provided with coacting lugs 87, 88, which coact with the lugs on the latch, the lugs on the lever being exemplified as at the same sides of the lugs on the latch. The latch and the catch on the movable frame-member are preferably located in a recess 91, shown as located between the lugs or flanges, 53, and a rear wall 89, so as to inclose the same. The lugs on the latch may extend through slots 92. QB. in the lug or flange 53, so as to be placed in range with the lugs on the lever. Theswinging back of the upper roll is accompllshed with a quick movement, as the spring aids in the separation for causing a bounding of the upper roll away from the lower roll, so that complete separation between the rolls is immediately effected to prevent a continuation of pressure between the rolls.
If it is desired to replace the movable roll coactive relation with its opposed roll, it is only necessary to swing the movable frame so as to cause reengagement of its catches with the latches. The lever-frame i may, during this movement, be held in upright position, so as to prevent interference thereby with the engagement of the latches with the catches, accomplished by providing the friction-washers 76.
4 The reengagement of the latches and catches may be accomplished in the present exemplification, by swinging the movable section to place the rolls in cooperative positions and by downward pressure upon the npper roll or upon the movable section ad Jacent to the front part thereof, or by upward pressure on the springs at the rear part thereof, or, if desired, the bearings 36 may be provided with lugs 96, between which a cross-rod 97 is rigidly secured, by means of which the said bearings may be pressed toward their opposed bearings for bringing the catches and latches into reengaging relation. The cross-rod 97 may be provided wit-h reduced threaded ends 98, the lugs 96 being clamped between shoulders 99 on said rod and nuts 100 on said threaded ends.
When wringing the goods, the goods pass between the wringer-rolls in a direction lengthwise of the horizontal plane in which the coacting parts of the faces of said wringer-rolls are located, and the movable wringer-roll has movement lengthwise of said path in its releasing movement.
It is obvious that changes may be made in the construction, and arrangement of the parts I have preferred to show, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A break-down frame for a wringer comprising a plurality of frame-parts. each including bearing means for a wringer-roll, pivot means between said frame-parts whose pivotal axis is substantially parallel with the axes of said bearing means, one said frame-parts comprising spring means as part of its frame-structure for exerting pressure between the wringer-rolls,
said spring means located between said pivot means and the bearing means of said one of said frame-parts, latching means between said frame-parts, andquick-releasing means for said latching means, where by quick separating movement between said wringer-rolls is caused by the quick release of said latching means.
2. In a wringer, the combination of a frame-section, a roll mounted therein, a second frame-section movable with relation to said first-named frame-section. said secondnamed frame-section comprising separated frame-parts connected by tensioning means for a coacting roll, bearing means on one of said frame-parts for said coacting roll, jointing means between the other of said frame-parts and said first-named framesection, connecting means between said lastnamed frame-part and said first-named frame-section for arranging said rolls in coactive relations with pressure between them. and quick-release means to release said connecting means, whereby to cause rebound by said tensioning means of said separated frame-parts and said tension means as an entity away from said first-named roll.
3. In a wringer. the combination of a frame-section, a roll mounted therein, a second frame-section mounted to move 11 Wardly and rearwardly with relation to said first-named frame-section, a coacting roll controlled thereby, connecting means between said frame-sections for arranging said rolls in coactive relations, and releasing means comprising an operating part movable in opposite directions and having releasing connection with said connecting means in either direction of its movement, and constructed and arranged whereby movement of said operating part in either of opposite directions acts to release-said connecting means.
4. In a wringer, the combination of a frame-section. a roll mounted therein. a second frame-section pivoted to said firstnamed frame-section. a coacting roll controlled thereby. latching means for latching said frame-sections in cooperative relations. and releasing means for said latching means comprising a cross-bar above the arc of the movement of said second-named frame-section and oppositely actuable connections with said latching means. and constructed and arranged whereby the roll controlled by said second-named frame-section is arranged to move in an are between the pivot of said second-named frame-section and said crossbar upon release of said latching means.

In a wringer, the combination of a lower frame-section comprising bearing means for a lower wringer-roll, an upper frame-section comprising bearing means for an upper wringer-roll and .tensioning means for said last-named bearing means formed as part of the framestructureof said upper frame-section, pivot means between said frame-sections whose pivotal axis is substantially parallel with the axes of rotation of said .wringer-rolls, latching means for said up er frame-section between said pivot andsai roll-bearings, and-quickrelease means for said latching means.
7. In a wringer, the combination of a lower frame-section comprising bearing means for a lower wringer roll, an upper bearing means for an upper wringer-ro l, pivot means between said frame sections whose pivotal axis is substantially parallel with the axes of rotation of said wringer-rolls, latching means for said upper frame-section between said pivot and said roll bearings, and oppositely acting releasing means for said latching means, said releasing means comprising an operating part, movable in opposite directions to release said latching means.

In a wringer, the combination of wringer-rolls, and means at each end of said wringer-rolls comprising a lower relatively stationary bearing, an upper movable bearing, a pivot-lug extending from said lower bearing, a pivotpart, a pivot between said pivot-part and said pivot-lug, a bowspring whose ends are in adjacency, said pivot-part and said second-named bearing secured to said respective ends of said bowspring, latching means between. said lower bearing and said pivot-part, and releasing means for said latching means.
9. In a wringer, the combination of wringer-rolls, and means at each end of said wringer-rolls comprising a lower relatively therefrom, an upper bearing,

stationary bearing, an upper movable hearing, a pivot-lug extending from said lower bearing, a pivot-part, a pivot between said pivot-part and said pivot-lug, a bow-spring whose ends are in ad acency, said pivotart and said second-named bearing secure to said respective ends of said bow-spring, latching'means between said lower bearing and sa1d pivot-part, and releasing means for said latching means, and a cross-piece connecting the releasing means at the respective ends of said wringer-rolls.
10. In a wringer, the combination of a roll-bearing, a pair of pivot-lugs extending operatively connected therewith and received between said first-named pivot-lugs, a catch therefor between said first-named pivot-lugs, a latch for said catch between said first-named ivot-lugs, and a releasing lever pivoted with relation to said lower bearing, said releasing lever and said latch provided with coacting parts whereby to release said catch by movement of said lever in either of opposite directions.
11. In a wringer, the combination of a roll-bearing, a pair of pivot lugs extending therefrom, an upper bearing, a pivot-lug operatively connected therewith and received between said first-named pivot-lugs, a catch therefor between said first-named pivot-lugs, a latch for said catch between said first-named pivot-lugs, a releasing lever pivoted with relation to said lower bearing, said releasing lever and said latch provided with coacting parts whereby to release said catch by movement of said lever in either of opposite directions, and a bow-spring having adjacent ends, said second-named pivoting and said second-named bearing secured to said respective ends.
