Be it known that I, `WALTER lW. CAnLsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Manhattan, in the county of Riley and State of'Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes Vvringers; and I ydo hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rlhis invention relates to improvements in clothes wringers, particularly to such as are adapted to be driven by'a motor and in which one of the roller shafts may be utilized also to operate devices in addition to the wringer,-one object of the invention being to provide simple and eiiicient safety devices for a clothes wringer an'd toso locate the manually operable member of said safety devices that the natural tendency of a user whose hand may have been caught between the rolls, will be to move his hand upwardly in an effort to release the same and thus cause the safety devices to be at once operated and one of the rolls to be separated from the other and cease o rotate.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel ,features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth andpointed out in the claims.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a wringer embodying my improvements. Figure 2 is 'a rear view. Figure 3 is a plan view, and Figuresl and 5 are sectional views'.
The frame of the device is indicated at 1 and is located near a tub 1a and a frame 1b may be located on the latter. The wringer frame 1 is rigidly secured at one end to a tubular standard 2 and the latter passes freely through a plate 3 rigid with the tubframe 1", in which it may turn. The lower endof the tubular standard may be mounted to turn in a part on a gear case located at or near the bottom of the tub. The plate 3 is provided with notches 4 5 to be engaged by a latch 6 pivotally attached` to the frame 1 whereby the device may be held in proper position relatively to a tub or heldin posii tion and prevented from swinging when shifted away from the tub. The-latch 6 will be held in engagement with the; notched plate by means. of a spring 7 `encircling a rod 8,--the latter being attached to the latch and passing through a lug 9 on the frame. The rod 8 is extended to the other end of the frame and passes through a lug 11 on the latter,*the free end of said rod being pro` vided with a finger-hold 12 to facilitate its manual operation. The frame 1 is provided with standards 13 suitably spaced apart and provided with bearings in which the shaft 14 of the lower rubber covered roller 15 is mounted. Arms 16 project forwardly from the standards 13 and are provided with bearings for the journals of a comparatively small wooden roller 17, the latter being disposed in front of and in proximity to the lower roller 15. To the forward ends of the arms 16, arms 13 are pivotally connected and at the free ends of the latter enlargements 19 are provided and these enlargements are made tubular in form to constitute bearings for the shaft 20 of the upper rubber covered roller 21 of the wringer. The shaft 20 is provided at one end with a suitable pinion 22 which receives motion from a pinion 23 secured to the shaft of the lower roller. The shaft 14 of the lower roller is coupled to a shaft section 24 which in eect con= stitutes a continuation of said shaft 14;v and the shaft section or continuation '24 of the lower roller shaft 14 is mounted in suitable bearings 25 at the upper ends of arms 26 rigid with and projecting upwardly from the frame 1. Beveled gears 27-28 are secured to the shaft extension 24 `and suitably spaced apart and one or the other of these beveled gears receives motion from a beveled pinion 29. rlhe beveled pinion 29 is secured to the ,upper end of a; driving shaft 30 depending into the tubular standard or upright 2, with which driving means lfrom a suitable motor or source of power may be connected. rlhe beveled pinion and its driving shaft are supported byl an arm 31 pivotally mounted on the frame 1 and this arm is provided at or near its free end with a groove 32 which receives a crank 33 at the lower end of a manually operable shaft 34 mounted the casing 35 which encloses the gearing. The manually operated shaft 34 is provided at its upperend with a crank handle for operating it to shift the beveled pinion from one of the gears to the other -to control the directionv of rotation of the wringer rolls.
The standards 13 are provided at their upper ends with rearwardly projecting arms its 37 having elongated slots 38through which rods 39 pass, said rods being provided at their lower ends with nuts 40 to constitute bearings for the lower ends of tension springs 41 mounted on said arms,-the upper ends of said tension springs being adapted to bear (when the rods 39 are moved upwardly) against the slotted arms 37 at the upper ends of the standards 13. The upper ends of the rods 39 are pivotally connected in bifurcated portions of levers 42 and the free ends of the latter are connected by a tripping-bar 43,-said levers and tripping-bar thus forming a yoke. rlhe bifurcated ends of the two llevers of the tripping yoke are provided lugs 42L to engage the arms 18. Vhen the tripping-yoke is moved forwardly and downwardly as above explained, the upper portions of the rods 39 will enter between.
the lugs 45 carried by the arms 18 and the 'pivotal connections of said rods with the levers 42 will pass a dead center extending through said pivotal connections and the Inountingsv of said levers on the lugs 45 of the arms 18 and thus the tripping devices will be held in thepositionsthey assume when the wringer is in operation.
Should the operators hands become caught between the rolls, the natural tendency will be for him to jerk them upwardly and in so doing he will strike thetripping bar and thus raise the tripping-yoke, causing the pivotal connections to move backwardly past the dead centers and the tension of the springs removed,-leaving the arms 18 and the upper roller carried thereby free to rise and the pinion on the shaft of the upper roll to move out of mesh with the pinion which drives it, thereby stopping the rotation of said upper roll.
An inclined apron 46 for directing water wrun from the clothes, back into the tub is suitably mountedon the frame 1 and guard arms 47 may extend upwardly from respective ends of the apron at respective ends of the wringer rolls. V
' r1`he shaft extension of the lower wringer roll 15 may be utilized for operatinganother device, such as an ice cream freezer, coffee mill or meat grinder. In the drawing l have shown an ice cream freezer 48 to be mounted on a bracket 49 (Fig. 5) supportedv by the wringer tube or standard 2 and having its operating shaft coupled to the shaft extension 24 of the lower wringer roll, as indicated at 49.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
' 1. The combination with the frame of a clothes wringer and a lower wringer roll mounted therein, of arms pivoted to said frame and having journal bearings near their free ends, an `upper wringer roll having its journalsmounted in said bearings, lugs projecting from said bearings, a tripping-yoke having lugs to engage the upper side of'said first mentioned lugs, said yoke including a member normally disposed approximately in front of the rolls, rods connected with said yoke near the lugs thereon, springs on said rods, abutments for the lower ends of said springs on said rods, and abutments on the frame for the upper ends of said springs.
2. The combination with the frame of a clothes wringer and a lower -roll journalled in said frame, of arms pivoted to said frame, an upper roll journalled in said arms near the free ends of the latter, two lugs at the free end of each of said arms, trippinglevers having bifurcated portions provided with lugs to engage-the upper side of the lugs on said arms, rods p-ivoted in the bilfurcated portions of said levers and movable between the lugs on the arms, slotted arms on the framethrough which said rods pass, springs on said rods bearing at their upper ends against said slotted arms, abutmentson said rods for the lower ends of said springs, and an operating bar connectingsaid tripping levers.
