Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led March 17, 19'13. Serial No. 7 54,685.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that T, FREDERICK SNOW, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Perry, in the county of Dallas and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Gearing, of which the following is the specification.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a laundry appliance for washing and rinsing clothes in an eflicient and economical manner and more particularly to provide aY structure adapted for power drive as from an electric motor or gas engine, the delivery of the power being easily` controllableby the operator and certain of the parts being adjustable inA position to facilitate their use.
In the embodiment here illustrated, the wringer is positioned on a suprporting means, and the supporting means can be moved along the platform and in addition to this the wringer can be swung horizontally on one' of the standards of the supporting means. Throughout all of these movements of the wringer, the driving connections to the source of energy lmay ,be maintained.
. There results from this conjstruction the advantage that clothes can bewrung out of ,a
washingmachine tub into a rinsing tub and then can be wrung out of the rinsing tub into the bluing water and finally out of the bluing water into a basket, and all o f these wringing operations can be carried out by the same wringer, driven vfrom the same shaft and without shifting the positions of the several tubs and basket.
The embodiment here illustrated possesses other objects and advantages more particularly in respect to the arrangement of gear ing and the mode of control as will be made clear by the following detailed description which is to be taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of thecomplete construction showing the wringer p0 sitioned `.close up to the washing machine tub.` Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the wringer supporting means illustrating some of the parts. in section. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail ofthe track j whereon the wringer supporting means may slide. Fig. 5 is a section through the structure of Fig. 4'o`n`the line indicated by the arrows. Fig. 6 isa detail of the` reversible clutch mechanism whereby the direction of gear 22.

.The embodiment here illustrated comprises a platform 11 supported on suitable legs 12, with longitudinal cross bars 13, and lateral cross bars 14. The washing machine tub 15 positioned on this platform and in the present instance, is located at one end of the same, leaving a space suitable for holding a rinsing or bluing tub into which the clothes may be passed from the tub 15. Beyond this free space, the platform is provided with an extension platform 16 which may be hinged to the end of platform 11 so that it can be folded over upon platform 11. When extended out into working position, the extension platform 16 rests on legs 17." This platform may be used for supporting a basket or the like.
The tub 15v is provided with a hinged lid or cover 18 from which the dolly 19 is operatively supported as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 3., A power shaft 2O is suitably mounted under the tub 15 and extends to the end of the platform. This power shaft may be driven from any suitable source of power as by means of the pulle 2l. `Looseljr mounted on said power sha t is a spur gear 22. A sleeve 23 is suitably splined on shaft 20 to travel with the same, as shown in Fig. 7, and a clutch 24, is slidingly mounted to establish a driving connection between sleeve 23 and gear 22, to rotate the same with the power shaft. The clutch member24 is actuated by a link 25 which is pivotally connected to thelv crank bend 26 of the dolly control rod 27 This rod 27 is journ'aled in bearings 28 and 29, and above these is provided a shoulder 30' to rest on bearing 29. Above the shoulder is positioned a lug Y 31, which can enter a socket 32 in the handle member 33. When the lug is in the socket, turning the handle member 33 will turn the rod 27 to throw the clutch member 23 into or out of driving engagement with the spur The handle member 33 is carried bythe cover 18 of the tub and has a projection 34 at its lower end, this being arranged to slide under plate 35 which is secured to the tub at and around the upper end of the rod 27. The arrangement of the projection 34 and plate 35- with respect to .the socket 32 and the lug 31 is such thatv when the projection 34 is under the plate .35, the cover is locked and the clutch memat its other end to a lever -39 which is pivoted n -tothe bracket 40 secured to the tub 15. A
A support for carrying a wringer is mounted to slide along the platform 11. This support comprises two trucks 45 and 46 having grooves to engage tracks 47 pro# vided along the sides of theplatform. As shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the trucks have roller bearings above and below said track and have screw plugs 48 to hold the rollers in their sockets. AA cross-piece 49 extends under the platformand' connects the two trucks.
On truck 45 is'mounted a bracket support having la vertical bar 50 and an inclined bar 51 connected together at their upper ends by a casting 52. On truck 46 is mounted a housing 53. A swinging bracket 54 on which a wringer frame 55 is secured has a socket to receive the upper end of the housing 53 so that the wringer frame may swing about housing 53 asia pivot. The free end of bracket 54 can be locked to the adjacent support by means of a latch 56, thus to hold the wringer in position for use at the side of the tub 15.
Two beveled gears 57 and 58 are loosely mounted on power shaft 20 and have their toothed sides facing each other. These beveled gears are held in constant engagement with a third beveled gear 59 by a bracket 60. Beveled gear 59 is fixed on a shaft 61, the outer end of which is provided with a worm 62, which is in engagement with a worm gear 63secured to the lower en-d of a vertical shaft 64 mounted to rotate in housing 53'.
To each side of bracket on power shaft 20 is mounted aA grooved sleeve 65 which is splined to power shaft 20. In the grooves of these sleeves 65, the bifurcated ends of a bracket 66 engage. To this bracket 66 is pivoted a link 67 which is pivotally connect- `ed to the crank arm of a rod 68 journaled along the side of the tub 15 and extending through the casting 5 2 with a handle 69 secured above said 'casting 52.
Each of the beveled gears 57 and 58.have projections extending through the bracket 59, these being provided to engage corre spending orifices in the sleeves 65. When handle 69 is turned, its cra-nk and link connection to bracket 66 will slide sleeves 65 to the left or to the right of bracket 60 so that either beveled gear 57 or beveled gear 58 can be rotated, or by putting the clutch in an intermediate position neither will bevrotated. v
At the upper end of shaft 53 is secured a beveled gear 7 0 which is in engagement with a beveled gear 71 secured to a horizontal shaft 72 which may be ar horizontal eXtension of one of the usual wringer rolls 73 andy 74. Thus it will be seen that when beveled gear 57 is engaged by sleeve 65, it will rotate shaft 6l in one direction and that in turn will rotate the wringer rolls, and when beveled gear 58 is engaged by sleeve 65, the wringer rolls will be rotated in the opposite direction.
From the description it will be seen,\that the wringer frame and its supporting means can be slid the entire length of the platform. By means of the splined connection of the sleeves 65 on the power shaft 20, these sleeves will slide along with the lwringer frame, and its supporting means and the wringer can be operated at any position along said platform. When the `wringer is at the extreme end of the platform next to the extension 16, a tub can be placed on the platform and clothes wrung from the tub to a basket or the like positioned on the eXtension 16. It will also be seen that by means of the beveled gears and 71 and the pivotal connection of the bracket 54 to housing 53, the wringer can be swung around horizontally .to `any position. If it should be swung around to the position indicated in the dotted lines inFig.v 3, clothes Almay be I wrung from a tub on the platform 11 to a basket or other tub standing along side of the platform.` Obviously a great variety of operative positions can be had by combining the sliding and swinging movements of the wringer.
