MEGHANICAL EYE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Ma. *7, 1922.
Application filed February 11, 1920. Serial No. 357,968.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS V. AnoNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Newark, county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Eyes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will. enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make, construct, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to numerals of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.
The present invention relates to improve ments in mechanical eyes for the so called sleeping dolls, and the object of the invention is to simplify and improve the mechanr cal eyes, with the view of facilitating the mounting of the mechanical eye in the head.
With these ends in view, my invention consists in certain novelties of construction and arrangements of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
While the preferred form of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, yet it is to be understood that minor changes may be made without depart ing from the scope thereof.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 represents, a vertical sectional view of a dolls head showing my improved mechanical eye secured thereto.
Figure 2 is a side elevation, and
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the eye and its closing means.
Similar numerals of reference refer to like parts throughout the specification and drawings.
In the drawings, 1 represents a hollow dolls head formed as usual with the eye sockets 2, into which my improved mechanical eyes are secured.
The mechanical eye consists of a. sheet metal cap 3 formed spheroidal wall 5, having a curved lower flange 6 by means of which the mechanical eye is secured to the eye sockets 2 of the metallic head 1, preferably by means of solder.
The hollow eye member 7 formed of hollow semi-spherical shape, of suitable material, preferably of celluloid, fits snugly in the sheet metal cap 3, within the annular rim 4 and spheroidal wall 5.
The upper movable lid member consists with an annular rim 4 head formed with of a spheroidal segment 8 having at its outer edges perforated lugs 9, in which a pivot rod 10 is supported.
The pivot rod 10 passes through suitable openings formed through the flange of the cap member 3 and the side walls of the hollow eye member 7.
One of the perforated lugs 9 projects rearwardly and downwardly to receive the bent portion of the pivot rod 10, the perforated lug 9 being provided with tongues 14 bent around the rod 10 to secure it to the movable lid member.
The rod 10 carries the counter balance weight 15 which holds the movable lid open when the doll is held upright, and causes the eye lid to close when the head is put in a reclining position.
Experience has demonstrated that the organization above described is a highly etficient one, and while I have shown the preferred embodiment of my present invention, I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as obvious modifications thereof, not involving the exercise of invention, may be made by any skilled mechanic, and such departures from what is herein set forth, I consider within the scope and terms of my claims.
Having thus described my I claim as new and desire to ters Patent is l. The combination with a hollow dolls head formed with eye sockets, cup-shaped members each formed with an annular rim, an eye member secured in the said rim, the cup-sl1aped member being provided with an integral segmental spheroidal wall having a curved lower flange for securing it to the eye socket of the dolls head, a movable upper lid member pivotally mounted upon said cup-shaped member, and a counter balance for said movable lid memberprojecting from one side of said lid member.
2. The combination with a hollow dolls eye sockets, cup-shaped members formed with an annular rim, and an integral segmental spheroidal wall having a curved lower flange for securing it to the eye socket of the dolls head, a hollow eye member of semispherical shape secured within the. annular rim and spheroidal wall, a movable upper lid member pivotally mounted upon said cup-shaped member, comprising a spheroidal segment having at invention, what secure by Letits outer edges perforated lugs, a pivot rod passing through said perforated lugs and through the said Walls of the eye member, and a counter balance secured to one end of the pivot rod, the pivot rod being secured to the movable lid member by an integral tongue formed on one of the perforated lugs, said tongue being bent around the rod.
This specification signed and witnessw] this nlnth day of February, 1920.
