ELEAZAR J. BEARD, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN BAND OR HOOP TIES FOR COTTON-BALES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,873, dated July 15, 1873; application filed May 1, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELEAZAR J. BEARD, of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented an Improved Band or Hoop Tie for Cotton-Bales, 0 which the following is a specification:
It is well known that cotton, hemp, flax, and similar fibrous material is iron-bound for baling, compressing, storage, transporting, and shipping purposes; that the metallic bands are held together by means of buckles, clasps, ties, and similar fastening devices. Therefore, to avoid the expense, time, and labor incurred in the use of the different fastening devices aforesaid the nature of this invention consists, chiefly in accomplishing the fastening of the bands or hoops by the bands or hoops themselves.
Of the drawing, Figure 1, Sheet 1, is a per-. spective view, showing the two ends of the band as applied and fastened. Fig. 2 is a side or edge view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan of the lock end of the band.
A is the lock end of the'band. The lock end A I provide with a notch, slot, or opening at a to receive and form a'bearing to hold the loop end of the band. Also, I provide the lock end with a projecting rivet, a to form a locking device to secure the loop end of the band. Further, I provide the opening a with arivet, at, having an enlarged head. The rivet a? is so placed as to be cut, punched, or notched through at the same time the opening a is made, and thus form with same a double bearing. B is the loop end of the hand.
To effect the fastening, the loop end B is simply passed to engage the opening a of the lock end A, and, by a lateral movement, brought to pass the rivet-head a under which the loop is returned and locked in safe en gagement, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Other well-known devices can be substituted, by which the loop can be secured to the edge of the band; also, to create locking devices at the extreme end.
I claim- The bale-tie, formed by looping one end of the band into the recess a cut in the edge near the other end of the band, and locked by rivet a near the recess, and rivet a atthe extreme end, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony of said invention I have hereunto set my hand.
ELEAZAR J. BEARD. Witnesses:
