or arms, about half as long as the bed, fixedat one end on a transverse pivot at the middle of the bed, one pair extending to the head and the other to the foot, and connecting with cross-bars thereat, one cross-bar at the head and one at the foot being connected by several tension-straps of leather, canvas, or other strong flexible material, the straps being arranged above the pivot and sufliciently short to support the arms and cross-bars and any weight that may be placed on them. above the horizontal plane of the pivot. At each end there is a stop-bolt which limits the height to which the end may be raised, and thus prevent the other end from falling too low 5 and in connection with the above I have one pair of the arms, or both, if I wish, provided with springs at the pivot to increase the range of the springing action of the bottom.

Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved spring bed-bottom, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation.

A represents the pivot at the middle of the bed, which, in a wide bed, will consist of a long metal bolt extending across from side to side, and through them, so as to hold them from spreading; but, for anarrow bed, may consist of a short pivot on each side board.

B represents the arms for the headfand G the arms for the foot. These arms are fitted at one end on the pivot, and at the other end connected to a cross-bar, D, and have one or more intermediate cross-bars E F fitted to them, near bar D. One of these intermediate cross-bars of each pair of arms is connected to the corresponding one of the other pair by the tension-straps G, of strong canvas or other suitable flexible and elastic substance, which extend over the pivot, and thus suspend the whole of the bed-bottom,which consists of the straps, arms, and cross-bars on the pivot, thus making a very simple and cheap bottom, which is elastic and easy. To control it so that the ends have the necessary vertical play, and yet prevent one end from tilting down and the other up, I employ stopbolts J, extending down through brackets K, and having adjusting nuts, L, below to limit the upward movement. They are also designed to adjust the bed, so as to have the head higher than the foot, if desired. By

adjusting one down and the other up, the bed may be adjusted so that the occupant of the bed may sit up or recline at pleasure. To increase the range of the springing action of the bed I propose to employ rubber springs, M, inconnection with the arms and the pivot in such manner that the arms may have endwise motion, as indicated in Fig. 2; but I will use them or not, as preferred.

Having thus described myinvention,1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- l. The two frames 0 D F D and B D F, connected by longitudinal straps G and pivoted at the ends on a common cross-bolt, A, so that the inclination of the bed-bottom, from head to foot, may be produced or'changed in the manner described.

2. The slotted brackets K on bedstead, and the pendent screws J on bed-bottom combined, as described, with the nuts L to hold the head and foot at the desired relative adjustment.
