Be it known that I, Connrnros THOMAS, a subject of His Majesty the King of England, and resident of Tonyretail, in the county of Glamorgan, Principality of ales, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Dress and other Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention refers to improvements in or relating to dress and other fastening devices, particularly of the hook and eye type.

The, object of the present invention is to provide a hook and eye fastening of simple and convenient construction which when in use will not be liable to become accidentally unfastened and will not be damaged by pressure when the garment or other articles to which they are attached is washed.

In order that the invention may be clearly understood and more readily carried into eiiect it is hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in

Figure 2 is a side elevation of said hook and eye also separated from one another;

Figure 3 is a side view showing the parts in their engaged position;

Figures 4:, 5 and 6 are similar views to Figures 1, 2 and 3 illustrating a slightly modified construction of eye;

Figure 7 is a front view showing the im proved hook and eye applied to a pair of braces for mens wear, and

Figure 8 is a detail side view of the hook showlng a slight modification in the way in which the eyes are bent for securing to the supporting cord.

As shown and according to the present invention the improved hooks and eyes are each formed by bending to the required shape suitable lengths of metal wire conveniently of round cross section. The hook in each case comprises a length of wire bent to form two main parallel members a a, the free ends of which terminate in eyes a for the reception of the sewing cotton or the like by means of which the device is attached to the garment or other article. At their other or outer end the two parallel members a are suitably widened out to provide a T-shaped head a forming a locking portion when viewed in plan, and angularly bent at a to form a hook portion when viewed in side elevation. The eye portion 6 is also formed by suitably bending a short length of metal wire so as to provide an intermediate loop I) which may be open sided as shown in Figures 1 to 3 or ofelongated closed formation as shown in Figures 4 to 6. At the free ends of the wire a pair of spaced terminal eyes 6 are formed in the usual manner for the reception of the sewing cotton or the like by which the article is attached to the garment or other article.

In the particular construction shown in Figures 1 to 3 the side portions of theeye are straight and parallel though they may be inclined inrelat-ion to each other if desired. They may also be curved or indented in their length if desired in order to prevent the accidental disengagement of the parts when they are together. The interengagement of the parts may be effected in several ways. For instance, they may be presented to each other so that one of the extremities of the head a of the hook will engage the eye first, the other extremity being then twisted round into position; or in the construction shown in Figures 1 to 3, the whole of the T-shaped hook portion can be presented to the eye in the same straight line, the projecting head a of the said hook member a being slipped into the eye 7) from the back passing under the sides of the loop 5 as will be readily understood.

In the slightly modified construction shown. in Figures l, 5 and 6 the eye I) instead of being formed of an open-sided intermediate eye portion 7) is bent to form an elongated or elliptical opening into which the enlarged T-shaped head a at the end of the hook member a. is adapted to be inserted laterally and then turned round into a straight line position. Here it will be seen that the parts a and b are positively prevented from becoming accidentally disengaged by the aforesaid elongated eye.

When the hook and eye are interlocked shown in Fig. 3 for holding two pieces of? goods together, the hook portion engaging in the eye member carries the strain on the hook member, while the head or locking portion serves to prevent the hook member from accidental disengagement from the eye member.

Figures 7 anti 8 illustrate the application of the improved hook and eye to a pair of braces, the only modification required being the bending of the eyes a on the hook at in a plane at right angles to that previously shown in the other figures, so as to grip the cord 0 of the braces.

From the foregoing description it will be maniiest that the improved hook and eye is of extremely simple construction and that it will not be liable to be readily distorted or bent out of shape under pressure.

What I claim is 1. A separable fastener comprising a hook member formed of a wire having a straight central portion beyond which the ends of the wire are bent toward each other and upon the straight portion to form a head, the ends then being bent laterally from the head portion in close contact and then bent substantially at right angles to the last mentioned portion to form a hook portion, the free ends being, bent into loops in opposite directions beyond the hook portion to provide means for attaching said hook member to a garment, and an eye member adapted tocooperate with the hook member formed with an elongated slot, whereby the head portion will prevent disengagement of the hook portion from the eye when the parts are in aligned relation,

A separable fastener, comprising a hook member formed to provide a shank portion, a hook portion at one end of the shank portion and a head on the end of the hook por tion, and means for attaching the hook n1e1nher to a garment on the other end of the wire bent to form a loop having the end portions of the wire "extending substantially parallel beyond the loop and formed to pro vide means for attaching to a garment, said head of the hook member'serving to prevent disengagement of the hook portion thereof from said loop of the eye member when in fastening cooperation.

A separable fastener, comprising a hook member formed of a wire having a straight central portion beyond which the ends of the wire are bent toward each other and upon the straight portion to form a head, the ends then being bent laterally from the head por tion in close contact and then bent substan tially at right angles thereto to form a hook portion, the free ends being bentinto 'loopsv in opposite directions beyond the hook portion to provide means for attaching said hook member to a garment, and an eye mem-- ber adapted to cooperate with the hook member formed of wire bent to provide an elongated loop, the end portions of the wire extending parallel from the longer sides of the loop and-bent beyond the end thereof into loops forming means for attaching to a garment, whereby in fastening cooperation the head portion of thehook member prevents disengagement of the hook portion from the elongated loop of the eye members In testimony whereofI have hereto signed my name.
