B. E. BEADLE. HAlR CLASPING DEVICE. APPLICATION men N ov.n. 192d.
Patented Feb. 28, 1922.
BYZZ W ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STA res PATENT OFFICE.
BLANCHE ELSIE IBEADLE, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR ONE- HALF TO RUSSELL A. BEADLE, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
HAIn-cLAsrrns DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented F61). 28, 1922- Application filed November 17, 1920. Serial No. 424,718.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BLANOI-IE E. Bnnnnn, citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the .county of Hampden and State ot'Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hair-Clasping Devices, of which the following is a specification. V
This invention relates to an improved hairclasping device which may be used for a curler, barrette, or analogous purposes, and constitutes an improvementupon the construction disclosed in my copending application Serial No. @0360, filed July 31, 1920.
It is desirable in devices of this character to provide means for positively retaining the parts in latched position and prevent the-m from becoming disengaged and at the same time provide a simple and easily manipulatedv form of latching mechanism which will not become entangled in the hair and which, while securely holding the parts against. accidental disengagement, can be readily released. when desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having means for latching the free ends of the arms together in such a manner as to prevent longitudinal movement of one arm relative to the other and thus insuring that they be held in latched position.
Other objects and advantages of the improved construction will be apparent from the following detailed description of the structure and its mode of operation.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of th device, showing the parts in their normally expanded position;
Fig. 2 is'a top plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a detail side view, showing the parts in latched position;
Fig. 4.- is a perspective view of a modified form of latching mechanism. showing the position of the parts when the latch is 'released;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the structure shown in Fig. 4, showing the parts in latched position;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a further modified form of latching mechanism;
Fig. 7 is a detail side view of the latch mechanism shown in Fig. 6;
Fig. 8 is aperspective view of another modified form 01' latch mechanism; and
Fig. 9 is a detail side view of the latch mechanism shown infFig. 8.
in the embodiment of the invention illustrated herewith, 1 designates the main body portion of the device, which is preferably formed of a strip of resilient material bent upon itself to form two resilient arms 2 and 3 of substantially equal length. These arms,
are connected by a loop-shaped portion 4, which is of such form as to materially en hance the resiliency of the arms and to permit the same to have a wider range of movement than would be otherwise possible. The
ing freely therein for engagement with and disengagement from the free end of the arm 3. Y
The guard loop 6 is-provided with an angular lip portion 7 extendingin angular direction from the plane of the main body portion of the loop and adapted to extend substantially parallel and contact with the outer surface of th arm 3 when in latching position, as shown in Fig. 8. The lip portion 7 terminates in an inturned projection 8, which is adapted to be received in an opening or recess 9 formed in the free end of the arm 3 when the guard loop is turned to latching position, thus providing means for holding the arms 2 and 3 against relative longitudinal movement and preventing accidental guard loop is employed and the free end of the arm 3 is correspondingly modified for engagement with the guard loop. The guard loop 12 is formed with its sides 13 inclined slightly towards each other as they extend from the eye 5, whereby the outwardly-extending portion of the guard loop is of less width than the portion positioned Within the eye 5, to better engage recessed notches 14: formed in opposite sides of the narrowed end portion 15 of the free end of the arm 3 and thus hold the arms against relative longitudinal movement when the parts are in latched position. As in the form previously described, the extreme end of the arm 3 is outturned slightly, as indicated at 11.
In the form disclosed in Figs. 6 and 7, the guard loop 16 is provided with an inturned projection 17 adapted to engage in an opening or recess 18 formed in the free end of the arm 3 to latch the arms 2 and 3 together and positively prevent accidental disengagement of the same.
The form shown in Figs. 8 and 9, as in the forms previously described, comprises resilient normally divergent arms 2 and 3, the arm 2 being provided adjacent its free end with an eye 5 for pivotally supporting a guard loop for holding the free ends of the arms in latched position. The guard loop 19 is pivotally supported in the eye 5 and is provided with an angular lip portion 20 extending in an angular direction from the plane of the main body portion of the loop and adapted to extend substantially parallel to and contact with the outer surface of a depressed recess 21 formed by bending inwardly the free end of the arm 3,
Since the angular lip portion 20 fits closely against the outer surface of the depressed portion 21, the arms 52 and 3 are securely latched together and firmly held against accidental disengagement.
It is to be understood that various changes may be made in the shape and arrangement of the parts shown and described without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
WV hat I claim is 1. A hair-clasping device, comprising, an elongated strip of resilient material bent upon itself to form normally divergent arms, one of said arms being provided adjacent its free end with an eye, and a guard loop piV otally mounted in said eye and provided with an angular lip portion overlying and fitting closely against the outer surface of the free end of the other arm when turned into engagement therewith.
2. A hair-clasping device, comprising, an elongated strip of resilient material bent upon itself to form normally divergent arms, one of said arms being provided adjacent its free end with an eye, the other of said arms being provided adjacent its free end with a depression, and a guard loop pivotally mounted in said eye and having a lip portion extending at an angle to the main body portion of said loop and engageable with the depressed portion of said last-named arm when the parts are in latched position.
3. A hair-clasping device, comprising, an elongated strip of resilient material bent uponitself to form normally divergent arms, one of said arms being provided adjacent its free end with an eye, the other-of said arms being provided adjacent its free end with a recess, and a guard loop pivotally mounted in said eye and having an inturned lip projecting inwardly from the guard loop and engageable with the said recess in the lastnamed arm when the parts are in latched position. i
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
