UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD 1P. MILLER AND VICTOR V. NELSON, OF ATWATER, MINNESOTA.
GALE WEANER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 28,1922.
Application filed August 5, 1920. Serial No. 401,412.
V Kandiyohi, State of'Minncsota, have invented a new and useful Calf Neaner; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to calf weaners and has for its objectto provide a calf weaner comprising a hollow bit having its end open and centrally disposed apertures and slots adapted to be received in the mouth of the calf for breaking the suction of the mouth while the calf is nursing.
A further object is to provide a hollow bit having apertured walls, the central portion of said bit being substantially rectangular shaped in cross section and the ends of the bit being round.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a calfs head showing the bit and its bridle attached thereto.
Figure 2 is a perspective View of the bit.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional View taken on line 33, of Figure 2. s
Figure 4 is a sectional View taken on line l-t of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a conventional form; of bridle which is adapted to be placed on a calfs head as shown in Figure l. The bridle is connected as at 2 to rings 3, which rings pass through apertures 4 in the ends of the hollow bit 5. The hollow bit is substantially round at its ends and preferably tapers outwardly as shown in Figure 2 andthe centralportion 6 which is'li received in the mouth of. the
' animal is reduced in size and substantially 7 will be maintained in parallel relation to the tongue of the animal when the bit is disposed in the mouth. The upper and lower walls 8 of the rectangular portion 6 are provide d with a plurality of apertures 9 through which apertures and through the slots 7, air passes from the intake end 10 of the bit when the calf attempts to nurse, thereby preventing the calf from obtaining sufiicient suction in the mouth to nurse.
The bit 5 is formed from a single piece of tubular material so as to reduce the parts to a minimum. It has been found that a bit 7 so constructed prevents the calf from obtaining sufiicient suction to nurse, and it has also been found that a bit so constructed does not injure the mouth of the animal.
From the above it will beseen that a calf weaning bit is provided which is positive in its operation and one wherein the oppositely disposed elongated slots will be maintained in parallel relation to the tongue of the animal during a nursing operation so that air will pass throughthe intake end 10 of the bit through the mouth and prevent suction. By having oppositely disposed elongated apertures, it will be impossible for the calf to form a suction in the mouth forwardly of the bit.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is A weaning bit formed from an elongated tubular member, the central portion of said tubular member being restricted and oblong shaped in transverse cross section, said rectangular shaped portion being horizontally disposed and provided with elongated slots in the opposite vertical walls thereof, the enlarged ends of the bit forming means for preventing theanimal from forcing the walls of the mouth into closed engagement with the restricted portion of the bit, the ends of said elongated tubular memberbeing outwardly tapered. V
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
