cHnnK PLATE. 'i
Application` led May 31,
v make and use thesame. o
The invention relates to draft rigging for railwayears, and more particularly to cheekplates or stop castings which are primarily desired for use with tandem spring draft rigging. l Y
The principal object of my invention, broadly stated, is to provide atandem spring cheek-plate furnished kwith the usual number of stops for the followers ofthe draft rigging and provided with a series ofrivet receiving openings lor pockets,- thel pockets being so related to the structural features of the plate as to form therewith a plurality of angular inwardly projecting members' which reinforce the said plate and prevent the buckling of the same under loads.
Another object of the invention is to ccnstruct a cheek-plate inv which some of the rivet receiving pockets are sov disposed and related that they form means for strengthen ing the cheekeplate against deformation.
VThere are other objects of theinvention relating to the variousv features thereof, as will hereinafter clearly appear in the more detailed description of the invention when the same is taken in connection with the accompanying drawing which has beenY chosen to illustrate the same, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cheekplate embodyingmy invention,
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the plate illustrated in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a longitudinal transverse sectionof Figure 1, and
Figures 4, 5 and 6, are, respectively, transverse vertical sectional views taken onlines if- 4, 5 5 and '6 6 of Figure 1, looking in the direction indicated by the various arrows. Y
Throughout the specification and drawing like parts are designated alike.
The cheek plate 1 is provided with a plurality of main stop shoulders 2, 3 and 4:, and with a plurality of intermediate or limiting Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb, 28,

stop shouldersy 5 and 6. The main stop shoulders are .preferably formed asI -inwardly projecting flanges 7, the said flanges are adapted to extend inwardly from the portions 8 ofthe web ofthe said clieekeplate. Thegsaid portions Sare adapted to form the rear face of the said plate, that is the por.- .tions of the said plate which isadapted to contact the adjacent face of the car sill to which the plate is attached. The said flanges 7 are also adapted` to formTsections with the portions 9 of the said cheek-.platevweb whichV are located-between the-main stop shoulders and which are spaced from the portions 8 ofthe web. .To yreinforce and provide additional Wearing area the nnsa` faces of the main'stops 2 and 4 are provided, respectively, with forwardly and rearwardly extending lips or flanges 1 0, and to strengthen the flanges '7 which form the front` and rear faces of the` middle stop 3 they are provided with` a plurality ofbracing ribs 11 which connect theflanges7 intermediate the upper'flange w12' and the lower,
rib 13 thereof.. To increase the'vvearingl area of the said middle stop the bracing ribs 11,
as well as. the flange 12 andthe rib1j3, are' provided with lips 1.4, vthe ,outer faces of which are inline with the `outeredges of thevsaid intermediate flanges?? which form the side walls of the middle stop 4.'
The intermediatestop shoulders 5` and V6 are each preferably formed as lconvolutions or bends inthe .portionsQ ofthe web of the casting, and it will beiclear from an inspec tion ofthe drawings, particularly Figures 2 and 3 thereof, that in the casting process the front, middle and rear stops will be cored from the front of the plate, and that the intermediate stops 5 and 6 will be cored fromy cent web of the cheek-plate, but also provide a firm riveting area for the intermediate portion of the cheek-casting, since `the outer faces of the bottom walls 16 of the said peck ets are arranged in line With` the outer or sill-adjacent portions 8 of the web of the cheekcasting The adjacent portions of the side Walls 19 of each two adjoining pockets 1S are adapted to formwedge shaped braces 20 which extend inwardly from the back Wall ofthe casting to the inner face of the portion of the web adjacent each Wedge shaped projection. The portions of the -[langes 7 ofthe middle stop 3 which would intersect the adjacent rivet pockets 18' vare also preferably inwardly taperedv as shown at19a'so as to form With the connecting rib 11 of the said middle stop a blunt Vwedge 20a. To maintain a constant or substantially constant thickness of Web the Wedge shaped projections 20 are hollovved out orundercut as shown at 21. Y Y i Having now fully described my invention, although it isto be understoodl that by the foregoing I do not intend Yto limit the same,
since the Words used are to be understood in' plate, "each opening being adapted tof re-` ceive asingle rivet only a portion of the Wall of eachopening merging into one of the stop shoulders of thesaid plate. j
2. A cheek-plate for tandem spring draft rigging, said plate beingprovided with a plurality of stop shonlders and further provided Witha longitudinally arranged series `'separated rivet head receiving; pockets,
the adjacent portions of the sidewalls of each tivo adjoining pockets forming a Wedge shaped projection, the said projections being adapted to reinforce and'strengthen the said y' stops and aplurality Vof intermediate` stops,
said intermediate stops being interrupted by a pair of the rivet headreceiving pockets, Wedge shaped members `forming portions of the side WallsV ofthe said'last named pockets `serving to connect the interrupted ip`o`r 4 f1 tions of the said intermediatestops. i
r5. cheek-plate for tandem spring -draft rigging provided with a cast metal web;
seriesof 'main' stops,r and a pluralityv of supplemental vstops formed in said web, porn tions of isaid web being countersunk 'and adapted to form lthe rear Wall of said plate, andV braces extending from the rear Wallof said plate towards the inner'4 or front face thereof betiveen said" main stopsand thefrefl spe'ctiveV adjacent Y supplemental stops, f said braces being Wedge shaped fin longitudinal section. w l if i 6. A cheek-plate fortandem spring draft? rigging providedv with a' front stop,y af rearl stop, and a middle stop, thesaid 'middlestopf extending the 'full heightgof said plate, tivoA series of rivet head receiving pockets countersunk inthe web of the said plate, thesaid middle stop serving to separate the twofsei ries, the adj acent'side Walls ofeach twoa'd; joining pockets being'vvedge-shaped. A In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
