Be it known that I. OREN K. BOYETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Doucette, in the county of Tyler and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful improvements in'Bill File or Article Holder, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has reference to means designed for releasably holding letters, news papers or other articles without any perforations 01' other mutilations of such articles and the primary purpose of the present invention is to provide an improved holder of this character designed to more securely receive and retain articles deposited therein than has heretofore been found possible with previous holders of a similar type. i

A further object is to provide a holder having a solid backing and a hinged slip carried thereby and formed so as to firmly grasp any articles inserted between it and the backing.

An additional object isto provide a wire clip formed from a single wire and having hinge coils looped so as to contract as the clip is drawn to an open position.

NVith the above and other objects in view, the invention may be said to reside generally in the details of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully pointed out, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a holder constructed in accordance with the invention.

Figure 2 is a vertical cross section taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and

Figure 3 is a fragmentary detail view of one of the hinged coils.

This holder includes a back plate or board 1 which may be constructed of wood or any other suitable material, and of course, to whatever size is most appropriate for the particular purpose to which the device is to be applied. For purpose of illustration, the board is shown in the drawings as substantially square and it is designed to provide asupport for the. spring clip which holds the letters, papers or other articles in place. A strap or hanger 2 is provided at the upper edge of the board being perforated as at 3 so that the device may be hung from a nail or other fixture in a wall or from whatever article the holder is to be hung. piece of wire which has an intermediate portion bent to form a clamp l connected by the coils to the parallel base members 6 which extend in spaced parallel relation from the arms 7 of the clamp as shown to advantage in Figure 1 of the drawings.

Each base member 6 is moreover provided with bent over shoulder forming portions 8 which are arranged to lie in a groove in the top edge or" the base or board 1 so as to hold the clips in place thereon. Being formed of spring wire, the spaced portions of the clip have a natural tendency tospring in toward each other and consequently the base members 8 would ordinarily grasp the base or board 1 firmly enough to prevent any accidental disengagement of the clips from the board or prevent any slipping of the hooks from the board. owever, to more positively retain the board and clips against relative movement, each base member 8 may be provided with a turned in point 9 for reception into suitable openings or recesses provided in the board 1 for that purpose, the contracting tendency of the device tending to keep the point 9 within the recess.

As shown the centrally positioned U-shaped loop 10 has two oppositely directed stub arms 12, from each of which is connected at a right angle but at an obtuse angle to said loop two angularside arms 10, each of which is continued in an arm portion 7 a clamp which terminates in a coil 5 as has been described.

The manner of forming the end coil 5 is disclosed in Figure 8. As there illustrated, it will be seen that the members 6 which extend'downwardly on one side oi? the board 1 and which lie flat up against the same are bent to extend outwardly from the board as indicated at'14: and then coiled downwardly as shown at 5 so that the coil depends below the members 7 of the clip and the wires 6.

' The natural tendency of the wires to uncoil' causes the clip to be with-drawn up closely to the face of the board and consequently when the clip is drawn outwardly therefrom, the coils 5 are contracted and will tend to snap the clip back in place when the latter is released. Each coil is thus supported outwardly of and slightly spaced from the board and is free to be contracted or expanded without any frictional engagement with the latter, enabling the elasticity of the spring to be longer preserved and adding strength to the device since it is observing as vious that the portions of the base members 6 provide flexible coil-supports. To limit the coils from undue movement away from the board guard members or stops 15 may be provided consisting of a wire having its terminal end secured to the board 1 and arched so as to extend inwardly of the cord so as to straddle the same in the manner in dicated in the drawing.

It is obvious that there are other and many ways in which the device may be employed. It is of course to be understood that changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, ma be resorted to in reducing the invention to practice whenever such changes, etc, properly an within the scope oi the invention as hereinafter claimed. 7

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A bill file of the class described includin 4 arectangular base member one edge of which is provided with oppositely positioned parallel grooves, a clamping member held to trally positioned extend in opposite directions two stub arms said base comprising a Wire member made of a single length of spring wire including a cen- U-shaped loop, from wh ch from each of which is continued at an obtuse angle to the plane of said loop two clamping arms each ending in a coil from which are continued two parallel base members each ending in a shoulder portion arranged to lie in one of said grooves, each arm continued in a clamping base ending in a terminal point arranged to be driven into said base to hold said wire members against casual displacement, the diameter of said coils dctermining the clamping space between said jaw and said base member and means for holding said coils to said base member, all as and in the manner shown.
