BATHING CAP.
APPLICATION min MAR. 15, 1921,

STATES ANNA BALDWIN, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
BATHI'NG CAP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 21, 1922.
Application filed March 15, 1921. Serial No. 452,437.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANNA BALDWIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bathing Caps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to caps, and more particularly to a, bathing cap.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a bathing cap of simple construction and neat appearance which, when applied, will effectively exclude moisture and will be held securely on the bathershead. A further object is to provide a cap of the character stated which may be produced and sold at comparatively low cost. Further objects will appear from the detailed description.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side view of a cap constructed in accordance with my invention as applied, partly broken away.
Figure 2 is a side view of the cap in normal condition.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view of the cap as applied showing the manner in which the flap fits about the wearers head above and in back of the ear.
The cap is made of sheet rubber and comprises a bc 'y 1 of usual shape provided with a skirt 2 which is adapted to fit about the bathers head in the known manner. \Vithin the skirt 2 I provide a flap 3 of sheet rubber which is secured at its upper edge. at 4, by means of a suitable cement or in any other suitable manner, to the .inner face of skirt 2 remote from the lower edge there of. Body 3 of flap 3 is of smaller size or less circumference than skirt 2, and the lower edge of this flap is positioned above the lower edge of the skirt.
When the cap is applied flap 3 fits snugly about the wearer's head so as to provide a continuous closure which effectively excludes moisture, the flap passing behind and above the wearers ears. skirt 2 being drawn down over the ears so as to protect the same in the usual manner. The skirt 2 fits about the wearers head and co-operatcs with flap 3 to prevent water from getting up under the cap. In this connection. the flap 3 is of particular value in preventing water from entering the cap beneath skirt 2 such as occurs in using caps of known type in which the skirt is held slightly away from the side of the head by the wearers ears thus forming slight openings through which water can readily enter the cap. In addition the flap 3 fits snugly about and grips the wearer's head so as to cfl'ectually prevent accidental displacement of the cap. It is a common practice with experienced swimmers to wear two caps of the ordinary type to exclude moisture. one
cap fitting about the head above the cars. and the outer cap being drawn down over the ears in the usual manner. This neces sitates the purchase of two caps, and is also open to the objection that the bather frequently loses a cap as in picking up one cap he is very apt to think that he has both caps.
What I claim is 1. In combination with a cap having a de pending skirt, a flap secured to the inner face of said skirt and having its lower edge positioned above the lower edge of the skirt the flap being adapted to fit snugly about the wearers head and the skirt being adapted to fit snugly about the wearers head below the flap and cooperating therewith to provide a double closure to exclude moisture from entering the cap between the wearers head and the skirt and the flap.
2. In combination with a cap having a depending elastic skirt, an elastic llap secured to the inner face of the skirt and adapted to fit snugly about the wcarcrs head. the skirt extending below the flap and being adapted to fit snugly about the wcarcrs head said skirt and the llap cooperating to form a double closure about the wearers head to exclude moisture.
3. In combination with a cap having a depending elastic skirt, a flap formed of a single layer of elastic material secured at its upper edge to the inner face of the skirt and having its lower edge above the lower edge. of the skirt, said skirt being adapted to extend over the wearers cars and to tit snugly about the wearers head below the flap.
4. In combination with a cap having a smooth elastic skirt. a thin flap of elastic material secured at its upper edge to the inner face of said skirt andadapted to fit snugly about the wearers hea d and above and in back of the wearers ears. said skirt extending below the flap and being adapted to fit snugly about the wearers head so as to 'form with said (lap 21 double closure to exclude moisture. t
In testimony whereof I alhx my signature.
MRS. ANN A BAIDWIN.
