WINDOW-SASH 'FASTENER FOR LOOKING WINDOWS IN PARTIALLY-OPEN rosrrxon':

-which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple locking device adapted to lock the upper andlower sashes to each other, when either orboth are partly open, in combination with a gravity controlled fastener that will admit of lowering but prevent raising of the lower sash when the upper and lower sash are unlatched fromeach other.
It is further an object of my device to provide a device of this nature that can be maniifactured at small cost and can be readily applied to the window sash at small expense. 1 attain these and other objects of my invention by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a window with my device. applied thereto 2 is horizontal section approximately on the line 22 of 1;

Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings, the upper sash 1 is provided with vertically extending plates 3 having suitable spaced openings 4 of suitable size to receive the locking projection 7 of the spring controlled sash fastener. Referring to Figs. 2, 3, and 4, I provide a plate 5 of sheet metal having a plurality of suitable openings 20 for any suitable screws to fasten the plate to the top horizontal strip of the lower sash of the window. Horizontally attached to the plate 5 is a pivoted latch 6 having a locking projection at latch end 7 of 8 resiliently pressing member 6 toward member 3. Attachedto the outer portion of pivoted latch 6 provide a socket 11 in which is mounted a bail 10, which carries-a roller 9, said bail being of suflicientlength so that the roller 9 may swing past the latch end or projection 7 to either an operative or inoperative position. Theroller 9 is of sufficiently large diameter to project beyond the member 7 and hold said member disengaged from the perforated strips 3 when the roller 9 is in operative position shown in Fig. 3. Pivoted latch 6, which is preferably formed from a metal plate, is provided with cut-out portions 12 for the bail 10. iAlso horizontally mounted-on plate 5 at right angles to the pivoted latch 6, I provide a gravity locking member13, preferably formed of sheet metal as illustrated, and providedwith a suitable clamp or wedge member,.which in turn is provided with a suitable flexible or resilient pad 15 adapted to abut against the window frame in proximity to the upper horizontal strip of the lower window sash, whereby to blocr said sash against being raised, while permitting of its being lowered at will, without touching the gravity fastener 13.
Referring to Figpd I may provide the gravity locking element 13 with asuitable threaded or unthreaded socket 17, adapted the members 14 and 15. It is within the conteniplation. of my invention to provide either one fastener for one side of the window or two of them on oppositesides as the horizontal construction illustrated in the other figures. In operation the device shown in Fig. 5 is used in the same manner as the device shown in Figs. 3 and a.
Vhat I claim is- 1. In a window sash fastener, the combination of a plate aflixed to the top of the horizontal strip of the lower sash, a spring controlled latch hingedly mounted on said plate, a vertical plate attached to the upper sash with Whichs'aid' latch may be releasably engaged at any of a series of perforations in said strip, a roller exceeding in diameter the projection on the pivoted latch member,
and'a bail mounted on said latch member and carrying said roller, said bail being suitably positioned and suflicieiit length to permit o'fswinging the roller past the locking projection of the pivoted l'atchelement.

In a window sash fastener, the combination ofa plate affixed to the top of the horizontal strip of the lower sash, a spring controlled latch hingedly mounted on said plate, a vertical plate attached to the upper sash with which said latch'may be'releasably engaged at any of a series of perforations in nation of a plate aflixed to the top of the horizontal strip of the lower sash, a spring controlled latch hingedly mounted on said plate, a'vertical plate attached to the upper sash with which said latch may be releasably engaged at any of a series of perforations in saidstrip, a roller exceeding in diameter the projection on the pivoted latch member, abalilmounted on said latch memberand carrying said roller said bail being suit-ably positioned and ofsufficient length to permit of swinging the roller past the locking projection of the pivoted latch element, a gravity locking member 'liinged ly mounted on the plate which is aflixed tothe horizontal strip ofthe lower sash, said gravity locking member having a bufling element mounted on its free end adapted to frictioiially engage the frame of the window to prevent element.

In a windowsash fastener of the class described, the combination of perforated lock engaging means attached to the vertical sash of the upper window, and a locking device detachab] y engageable therewith, sard device consisting of 'a plate secured to the top of the upper horizontal portion of the lower sash, an upright locking element resiliently"pressed toward and normally engaging the locking means on the upper window sash, and a second locking device hinged to the aforesaid plate, a buffer member on said second locking device, saidbufier member engaging by gravity frictionally :withthe'side of the window frame immedi ately above the lower sash when said second locking device is disposed in its normal diagonal position, substantially as described WI IAM F.
