ADJUSTABLE BUST-CONFINING GARIENT.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb, 14, 1922 Application filed Augu'at 28,'1920. Serial No. 408,891.
"which the following is a full,"clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to womens wearing apparel and its object is to provide a new and improved adjustable bust confining garment more especiallydesigned for the use of stout, fleshy women, and arranged to distribute the flesh of the bust towards and under the arms and in a downward direction and awa from the median line of the front thus'givlng a dressy appearance to the user.-
Another object is to draw the shoulder flesh that protrudes over the upper edge of the back of the corset over the shoulders to the front and to evenly distribute it over the shoulders. Another object is to hold the bust firm and prevent the same from becoming drooping and flabby. Another object is to enable the user to readily adjust the garment to produce the desired result.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described andthen specifically pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented inthe accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front perspective view of the improved adjustable bust confining garment as applied; 1
Figure 2 is an enlarged cross section 'of the same on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Fi ure 3 is a view of the inner face of the divi ed back of the garment;
Figure 4 is a front perspective view of a modified form of the adjustable bust confining garment; and
Figure 5 is an enlarged cross section of the same on the line 5-5 of Figure 4.
The body 10 of the adjustable bust con-. fining garment is approximately in the form of a sleeveless close fitting waist 91' corsetcover, and the body 10 is of unbroken continuity and is adapted to "be-opened and closed at the back. For this purpose the ends of the body 10 are provided with suitable worn b fastening devices 11, such as hooks and eyes, for closing or opening the body at the back. The body 10 is formed of a number of sections fastened together and shaped to provide bust portions 12 terminating in inverted V-shaped or triangular shoulder portions 13 having their apexes extending to the shoulders of the wearer, as plainly indicated in Figures 1 and 4.
Shoulder straps 14 are attached to the back of the body '10.at opposite sides of the back median line, asplainly shown in Figure 3, and the front ends of the shoulder straps 14 are provided with loops 15 slidingly engaged by tightening straps 16 extending down' over the bus .portions 12 and passing through guideloopsf17 attached exteriorly to the body 10 at the hustportions 12. The loops 15 are provided with inwardly projecting pins 34, which engage with perforations 33', grouped in pairs along the tightening straps adjacent to loops '15, and when so engaged hold the straps firmly in. the desired positlon.
The loops 15 are further provided with lugs 36 which keep the shoulder straps 14 and tightening straps 16 from becoming entangled. The lower ends of the tightening straps 16 are provided with rows of eyelets 18, of which any one of the eyelets of a strap is ada ted to be engaged with a hook 19 secure to a shield 20, preferably of V-shape, and attached to the lower end of the body 10 at the front median line thereof. The apex of the shield 20 is provided with a strap 21 carrying a loop 22 adapted to engage one of the studs 23'on the corset 24 the user.
It wlll be noticed that the lower edge of the body 10 fits snugly around the waist of the wearer and is held in this ition by the connection of the shield 20 with the corset 24.
In order to don the garment, the tightening straps 16 are loosened in the loops 15 to permit. the user to readily pass the arms through the shoulder straps 14, after which the rear ends are closed b the fastening devices 11. When this has n done, the user pulls downward on the tightening straps 16 whereby the bust portions 12 are flattened out in 'a rearward direction thus drawing the flesh of the bust in a like direction, that is, towards and under the arms and away from the front median line. The fiattenin of the bust portions 12 also tends to flatten t e flesh of the bust in' a downward direction t uniformly distributing the flesh of the bust at the front of the body in a rearward and downward direction. -It.will also be noticed that on drawing the straps 16 tight, a pull is exerted on the shoulder straps 14 to draw the back shoulder flesh which protrudes above the upper edge of the corset in a forward direction over the. shoulders thus distributing such flesh at the shoulders and eliminating the bulges at the back. After the straps 16 have been tigthened they are fastened to the hooks 19 on the shield 20. It will be noticed that the tightening straps 16 allow of lowering the shoulder straps 14 and hence permit the back of the body 10 to drop down to the waist line to allow the user to readily engage the fastening devices 11 and thereby close the back without undue straining of the arms. After the back is closed, the user exerts a downward pull on the tightening straps 16 to draw the back up into place, and on a further downward pull cause a flattening of the bust portions 12, as above described.
It will further be noticed that the shoulder straps 14 and the tightening straps 16 extend from the shoulders of the wearer downward and converge toward the median front line thus extending over the bust portions 12 at the sides near the median front line and thereby tending to flatten the bust portions 12 and the bust rearward and downward as above mentioned.
In the modified form shown in Figures 4 and 5, each shoulder strap 30 is attached to the back of the bodylO, the same as above described relative to the shoulder straps 14, but the shoulder straps 30 are made sufliciently lon to slidingly engage adjacent buckles 31 astened by short straps 32 to the shoulder portions 13 of the body 10, and the ends of the shoulder straps 30 are then passed through holding loops 33 attached to A the body 10 above the bust portions 12. It is understood that in this case the shoulder straps 30 are tightened by exerting a down-- ward pull at the front end to draw the shoulder straps through the buckles 31 until the bust portions 12 are flattened out, the same as above described in reference to the tightening straps. Otherwise the construction of the garment is the same as the one above claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. As an article of manufacture, an adjustable bust confining garment, comprising a sleeveless close fitting waist of unbroken continuity and having bust portions, the waist being adapted to be opened and closed at the back, shoulder straps attached to the back and extending over the shoulders to t .e front, loops held on the front ends of the said shoulder straps, tightening straps attached to the front of the waist above the bust-portions and slidingly engaging the said loops to allow of drawing the straps tight and exerting a rearward pull on the said bust portions to flatten the latter and thereby distribute the flesh of the bust in a rearward direction, a shield at the front lower end of 'the said waist, and means connecting the lower ends of the said tightening straps to the said shield.
2. As an article of manufacture, an adjustable bust confining garment, comprising a sleeveless close fitting waist of unbroken continuity and having bust portions, the waist being adapted to be opened and closed at the back, shoulder straps attached to the back and extending over the shoulders to the front, loops held on the front ends of the,
said shoulder straps, tightening straps attached to the front of the waist above the bust portions and slidingly engaging the said loops to allow of drawlng the straps tight and exerting a rearward pull on the said bust portions to flatten the latter and thereby distribute the flesh of the bust in a rearward direction, a shield at the front lower end of the said waist, means connecting the lower ends of the said tightening straps to the said shield, and means on the shield to fasten the latter to another garment.
