UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MORRIS E. MENAKER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASS'IGNOR T0 MAASS & KEMPER, INQ, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, .A GQRPORATION 0F MARYLAND.
GARMENT.
Application filed December 1, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Monnrs E. MENAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of garments known as Iniddy blouses, and its object is to provide in a garment of this or a similar type a novel and improved means for obtaining a perfect fit at the waist.
The object stated is attained by means of a combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
In the drawing, Figure l is a front elevation of the garment showing the waist portion thereof partly unfolded; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the garment showing the waist portion completely folded and secured in such position; Fig. 3 is an enlarged section through one side of the lower end of the garment before being folded, and Fig. t is a similar view showing the same folded.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes the body portion of a blouse or similar garment to which the invention is applied. The bottom of the garment, or that part which goes around the waist, is made with a wide hem 6, and on the inside of this hem are front and rear belt sections 7 and 8 of such length that when they are connected at their ends they completely encircle the waist. At the endsof the front belt section 7 are button holes 9, the same being engageable by buttons 10 secured to the ends of the rear belt section 8. Any other suitable means for connecting the belt sections may of course be provided. The rear belt section is somewhat shorter than the front section, and hence when said sections are buttoned up, the buttons or other fasteners are visible only from the rear, as shown in Fig. 2.
In use, the hemmed lower end portion 6 of the garment is first folded upwardly against the outside of the garment, which leaves the belt sections 7 and 8 exposed. It

will be noted that the belt sections are' of the same, or substantially the same width as the hemmed lower end 6 of the garment, and they are attached at the top of the hem, as shown in Fig. 3. The next step in adjusting the waist portion of the garment is to make another upward fold so as to bring the hem 6 inside of this fold, as shown in Fig. 4. The attached edges of the belt sections are now located above the fold, and they are swung down to overlap the same on the outside, as shown in Fig. 4, after which they may be buttoned up as shown in Fig. 2, which completesihe operation of adjusting and securing the waist portion of the garment. The upward folding of the hem 6 is made to correspond to the width of said hem and that of the belt sections, so that when the latter are folded down and secured at their ends as described, they completely cover the fold, and hence there is left nothing visible to detract from the appearance of the garment.
By the structure described, the various more or less unsatisfactory expedients, such as clasps, pins, lacings, etc., resorted to for adjusting the waist portion of a blouse or similar garment are all done away with. The garment cannot slip up or down, and it fits perfectly all around the waist. If a more tight-fitting garment is desired, it is necessary only to move the buttons 10.
I claim:
1. A blouse having a foldable bottom portion, waist-encircling belt sectionsv secured to the inside of the blouse at their top longitudinal edges, the connection being at the line of the fold, and means for connecting the ends of the belt sections.
2. A blouse having a hem at its lower edge, waist-encircling belt sections on the inside of the blouse secured at their top longitudinal edges above thelower edge of the blouse, and means for connecting the ends of the belt sections, the bottom portion of the blouse being foldable to enclose the hem, and the belt sections being foldable to lap the fold on the outside.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
MORRIS E. MEN AKER.
