CHARLIE F. SIMPSON, OF MARTHA, OKLAHOMA:
COTTON GIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 7, 1922.
Application filed April 19, 1921. Serial No. 462,591.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLIE F. SIMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residin at Martha, in the county of Jackson and tate of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cotton Grins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cotton gins and has especial relation to that type of gin known as pneumatic gins, in
which an air blast is utilized for removing The present invention aims to eliminate this disadvantage by providing means for cleaning or removing the accumulated lint from the air duct without interfering with the operation of the gin.
Other objects and advantges of the invention will appear as the f0 lowing description is read in connection with the accom panying drawings.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a sectional view of a cotton gin of the pneumatic type. V
Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail view of the roller.
Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates one of the saws of a gin, 11 the lint flue and 12 the air duct, to which air is from an air chamber 13. At the juncture of the lint flue and air duct, the gin is arranged to provide a nozzle 14 so as to discharge a jet of air across a portion of each saw to remove the lint and carry it through the lint flue to the usual condenser. The foregoing structure is that usually found in pneumatic gins and its disadvantage resides in the fact'that a portion of the lint removed from the saw teeth is caused by the air blast to accumulate in the re stricted part of the air duct and to interfere with the passage of air through this duct and consequently interfere with the operation of the gin.
To overcome this, the present invention aims to provide means for removing this obstruction during the operation of the gin. For this purpose there is provided a roller 16, which is mounted at each end upon trunnions 17 one of which has secured thereto an operating handle 18 which is located upon the outside of the gin casing and by means of which the roller may be rotated as desired. .The roller 16 is mounted within the machine so that its periphery will be spaced from but disposed concentrically to one wall of the air duct 12 and thus form a section of the opposite wall of this duct. In addition there is provided an arcuate wall 19 having one edge located adjacent the periphery of the roller 16 and its opposite edge connected to the partition which dividesthe air duct from the lint flue, so that a housing is formed which encloses substantially one-half of the roller. If desired this roller may have its periphery provided with ooves or serrations to more readily take hold of the lint.
When an obstruction 1s formed in the duct, the roller may be rotated so as to carry the obstruction upward toward the nozzle 14, until it is forced by the saws over the arcuate wall 19 into the lint flue 11, where it is carried to'the condenser in the usual manner.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim. Having described the invention what is claimed is The combination with a cotton gin, of a longitudinally grooved roller In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
