Abstract

462,201. Opening and cleaning fibrous materials. STRINGER, F. Jan. 11, 1936, No. 959. [Class 120 (i)] Apparatus for opening and cleaning fibrous material comprises a hollow toothed cylinder a, Figs. 1 and 2, formed with perforations or openings c interspersed between the teeth f so that air may be sucked into its interior, a hollow shaft e connectible to a suction device and about which the cylinder is adapted to revolve, and means, e.g. plates h, communicating with the hollow shaft and confining the area of the cylinder exposed to suction to the region in which fibrous material is subjected to the action of the teeth of the cylinder and any devices co-operating therewith. In a waste opener comprising a toothed cylinder a having a taker-in 3 and workers 4 on shafts 5, the toothed cylinder a is formed of a shell b having teeth f alternating with the perforations c and end discs d each having a central boss d<2> mounted on a hollow shaft e. A hopper g is formed by curved plates h extending the whole length of the cylinder a while the hollow shaft e is in communication with a fan. A worm or scroll j (or a brush) is provided to remove dirt from the shaft e to a catch pit k, Fig. 4.
