Description

Fb.20,1923'. EL B. SHERMAN ATTACHMENT FOR HULLER COTTON GINS Eiied May 12, 1922 Invenion Pawnee Feb. 2a, was.
ELDRIDGE B. SHERMAN, or BARTLETT, TEXAS, AssIGNon TO E. o. SONNTAG, or
' BARTLETT, TEXAS.
ATTACHMENT FOR HULLER COTTON GID IS.
Application filed May 12,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELDRIDGE B. SHER- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bartlett, in the county of Williamson and State of Texas, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Attachments for Huller Cotton G ins of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cotton gins and in such connection has particular reference to an attachment for the type of cotton gin known as a huller gin, wherein the spaces between and at the top of the huller ribs are kept clear of wadded seed cotton and small trash. My invention also has reference to the construction and location of such an attachment.
The usual. construction of a huller gin has the regular gin saws in connection with the ginning ribs and roll box. Before entering the roll box the cotton must be drawn through what are known as the huller ribs at the base of which is located the picker roller, which agitates and throws the seed cotton against the huller ribs, the saws pulling the cottom through the ribs into the roll box. In this operation there is a tendency to work the seed cotton and trash to the tops or forks of the huller ribs. causing the spaces between the ribs to become clogged, retarding the cotton from passing through the ribs, necessitating the frequent cleaning of the spaces between the ribs, while the saws passing repeatedly through this wadded cotton and trash dulls the saws, causes friction that often sets the cotton on fire and damages the cotton by cutting: the fiber.
There is no arrangement or attachment for keeping these spaces between the huller ribs above the saws free from this accumulation of wadded cotton and trash.
My invention provides a means for doing this, which means consists of a roller studded with pins set in spiral form around the roller, which pins are set slightly tan gential to the periphery of the roller and so arranged that a pin will pass between each pair of ribs at every revolution of the roller.
The construction and operation of my invention will be more fully understood huller gin; 2, the roll box; 3, the saws; 4-,
the brush for removing lint from the saws; 5, the ginning ribs; and 6, the huller ribs;
all of which are of well known construction and arrangement. 7, is the discharge opening of the inlet 1, near the bottom of which is arranged the picker roller 8, with pins 9.
Between the roll box 2, and the picker roller 8, in the inlet 1, is arranged a roller 10, having pins 11, which are set tangential to the periphery of the roller rib cleaner. In the revolution of the roller 10, each of the pins 11 will pass successively between the huller ribs 6, above and saw teeth. The pins 11, as the roller 10 revolves, enter between the huller ribs 6, near the fork above the saws 3, with a combing motion keeping the fork of the ribs from becoming clogged.
In Fig. 2. 8 is the picker roller, 6. 6 are the huller ribs showing the spaces through which the pins 11 pass, 10 is the rib cleaner roller showing the pins set spirally around it. a pin for each space between the ribs.
Having thus described the nature and object of my invention. what I claim as new just clearing the and desire to secure by Letters Patent is.
In a huller gin, in combination with the roll box, the saws, the ribs and a picker roller. a revoluble roller having pins set in spiral form, a pin for each space between the ribs through which the saws pass, set slightly tangential to the periphery of the roller. said roller arranged adjacent to the huller ribs just above the saws, the pins passing between the ribs as the roller revolves.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
ELDRIDGE B. SHERMAN.
