To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, Lucy V. HANSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leesburg, in the county of Lake and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment Hangers, of which the followin is a specification.

This invention re ates to garment hangers, and an object of the invention is to provide a garment hanger of artistic appearance which embodies a pair of pivoted jaws, held in article or garment gripping position as by spiral spring and supported by a suitable suspending hanger or hook straddling the finger gripping portions of the jaws, which is constructed of wire and has its ends inturned and extending into the coils of the springs, and which may also form pivots for pivotally connecting the garment jaws of the hanger. Referring more particularly to the drawings, the garment hanger comprises a pair of garment gripping jaws 10 and 11, which are preferab y constructed of sheet metal, enamelled in any desired color or nickel plated to add to the attractiveness of the appearance of the han er. These'jaws 10 and 11 are shaped to orm parallel laterally extending portions 12, projecting upon each side of the lower edge of the intermediate portions 13 of the jaws. As clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawings the intermediate portions 13 angle outwardly from each other and are relatively wide, thus forming upstanding finger grips to permit the spreading of the lower engaging edges of the plate, to release the garment from the hanger structure. The jaws 10 and 11 have their intermediate portions, at their lower edgles, bulged outwardly as shown at 14 along t e garment gripping portions thereof to accommodate the thickened portions of a garment at the seams,

and to insure a 'firm u n thegarment by the hanger. The jiigs lll and 11 have cars 15 struck therefrom and the ears upon one end of each of the handle or intermediate portions-13 overlap, as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings, and are perforated, to receive'therethrough'the inturned ends 16 of the handle or han 'ng handle 17. This hand'le 17 is preferab y made of a single 'strand of wire bent intermediate its ends and having the lengths adjacent the bent portion twisted together, and shaped to form a hook 18, adapted to engage over a nail, clothes hook, or analogous support, while the lengths of wire are spread to form a depending U- shaped rtion straddling the finger-gulp or interme iate portions 13 of the jaws 10 and 11 thus straddling said handgrip. The lower inturned ends 16 of the handle or hanger extend through the perforations in the ears 15, pivotally connecting the plateslO and 11, and they also extend into the convolutions of the iral s ring 19 and serve as a support there or. ne end of the spring 19 engages the jaw 10, while the other end engages the jaw 11, as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawings, the said spring being adapted tov hold'the lower garment gripping portions or edges of the jaw together, to

In Figure 4 of the drawings, a modified form of the handle structure is shown, this form comprising an inverted U-shaped portion 20, which is constructed of a single length of wire, twisted intermediate its ends to form an eye 21, and extending in opposite directions from the eye to straddle the hand grip portions or intermediate portions of the jaws of the garment hanger, and having its terminals inturned as shown at 22, to form the pivot pin for the jaws, and also to form reinforcements and supports for the spiral spring which holds the jaws together.

hook 23 is connected, by means of an eye 24, formed thereon, to the eye 21, the said acting as a fulcrum for the pivotal movement of the jaws and 31, while the ends of the spring are bent to engage across the jaws outwardly .of their ivots or fulcrum as shown at 33, to hold t e lower garment gripping ed s of the jaws in engagement with each t er, or in gripping engagement with a garment. The handle 34 of this modified form of the garment hanger is preferably formed of a sin le len h of wire, bent intermediate its en s and aving the portions adjacent the bend therein twisted and shaped to form a hook as shown at 35, while the sections of the len hs of the wire at the lower terminal of t e twisted portions are spread to constitute an inverted U-shaped portion to straddle'the upper or hand grip portions of the jaws 30 and 31. The terminals of the handle 34 are inturned as shown at 36 and extend into the convolutions of the spring 32, to connect the handle 34 to the jaws 30 and 31.

Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit of this invention, but;

I claim:

1. In a garment hanger, the combination of a pair of jaws having upstanding finger grip extensions movable toward each other to open the jaws, means yieldably urging 7 said jaws toward each other, and a hanging handle comprising a hook and a depending inverted U-shaped portion straddling sai finger grip extensions and pivotally connected to said jaws substantially intermediate their ends whereby said finger rip extensions ma be swung through sai inverted U-shape portion to facilitate manipulation of. the jaws while the hanger is being supported from said hanging handle.

2. In a garment hanger, the combination of a pair of jaws having upstanding finger grip extensions movable toward each other to open the jaws, means yieldably urging said jaws toward each other, and a hanging handle com risin a hook and a depending inverte U-s aped portion straddlin said finger grip extensions and pivotal y connected to said jaws intermediate the ends of the jaws and finger gripping extensions, whereby said finger grip extensions may be disposed with the medial plane between said jaws and finger rip extensions coincident with the plane of said U-shaped portion, or swung to pass through said plane to permit the jaws to assume a pendent position responsive to the force of gravity when the handle is at an angle to the vertical, said hook being in the plane of said U-shaped portion.
