DEVICE FOR CONNECTING CIRCUIT CONTROLLERS WITI-I RAILWAY SWITCHES. I 2
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 11, 1921. Serial No. 507,123.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVAIIIER P. Nnonnn'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Connecting Circuit Controllers with Railway Switches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices foroperatively connecting a circuit controller with a railway switch.
As is well understood, devices of this character should be adapted to maintain a connection between the switch and the circuit controller without lost motion, and one object of my invention is theprovision of a simple device for accomplishing such result.
I will describe one form of connecting device embodying my invention, and will then point out the novel features thereof in claims.
In the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 is a top plan view showing a railway switch and a circuit controller together, with one form of device embodying my invention for operatively connecting the two. Fig. 2 is a view on an enlarged scale showing in front elevation the connecting device illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan view, partly sectioned, of the connecting device illustrated in Fig. 2.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts in each of the several views.
Referring first to Fig. 1, the reference character A designates a railway switch having movable rails or points 2 and 2, and B is a circuit controller comprising an operating arm or crank 3. Attached to the switch point 2 is a switch lug 4;, and attached to the operating crank of the circuit controller B is an operating rod 5. The lug 4: and the rod 5 are connected together by a device C which is illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3.
Referring now to Figs. 2 and 3, the switch lug 4 is provided with a threaded end 4;, and adjoining this threaded end is a bevelled shoulder 42 The operating rod is provided with an eye 5 which fits freely over the threaded end 4* of the switch lug, and both faces of this eye are bevelled as at 5. and 5 so that the inner face 5" cooperates with the bevelled shoulder 4 on the switch lug. The operating rod is held in place on the switch lug by means of a nut 6 having an inner bevelled face 6 co-operating with the bevel 5 on the eye 5. A jam nut 7 is provided to prevent the first nut 6 from backing off.
In the device which I have described, there is absolutely no lost motion between the switch lug at and the operating rod 5 after the device is assembled, and no lost motion can develop unless for some reason the bevelled surfaces should wear. wear should occur, it can be promptly and easily taken up by tightening the nuts 6 and 7. The device not only provides a very simple means for maintaining a rigid connection between the lug and rod, but it also provides a simple means for disconnecting these two members if it becomes necessary.
Although I have herein shown and described only one form of connecting device embodying my invention, it is understood that various changes and modifications may be made therein within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. Apparatus for operatively connecting a circuit controller to a railway switch point, comprising a switch lug fixed to the switch point and having a threaded end and an adjoining bevelled shoulder, an operating rod "for the circuit controller having an eye fitting over the threaded end of said switch lug. both faces of said eye being bevelled so that one such face co-operates with the bevelled shoulder on the switch lug, and a nut screwing on the threaded end of said switch lug and having a bevelled face co-op'erating with the other bevelled face on the operating rod.
2. Apparatus for operatively connecting a circuit controller to a switch point, comprising a member attached to the switch point and a member attached to the circuit Patented Feb. '1, 1922.
If such I controller, two spaced bevelled surfaces on prising a member having two spaced bevelled surfaces, and a co-acting member having bevelled surfaces matching those on the first member.
4. Apparatus for operati'vely connecting a circuit controller to a switch point, comprising a member having a threaded end and anadjoining bevelled shoulder, a coacting member having an eye fitting over said threaded end, both faces of. said eye being bevelled so that one face co-operates with the said shoulder, and a nut screwing on the threaded end of the first member and provided with a bevelled surface (re-operating with the other face of said eye.
5. Apparatus for operatively connecting a circuit controller with a switch point, comprising amember having a fixed bevelled shoulder, a bevelled part adjustable on said member towards and away from said shoul der and a second member provided with two bevelled faces adapted to be clamped between said shoulder and said adjustable part.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
VVALTERP. N EUBERT.
