Be it known that I, SAMUEL S'LEPHEN. STRASBURG, a citizen of the United States,-
residing at St. Marys, in the county of Auglaize and State of Ohio,have invented a'.
new and useful Drier, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a drier, adapted to be used for handling fruit, vegetables, clothesor anything else which requires to be dried.
The invention aims to provide a structure which may be used in comparatively small size, or in comparatively large size, at the will of an operator, novel means being provided for caring for the water of condensation.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter' described and claimed, it being understood that, within thelscope 4of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit ofthe invention.

Figure 1 shows in longitudinalsection, a device constructed in 'accordance with the invention, parts appearing in section; Figure 2 is a cross section on the line 2 2 of Figure l; Figure 3 is a sectional elevation showing a slight modification in the inven tion.
The device lforming the subject matter of this application embodies a plurality of units, each unit including an outer member or pan 1, including a side wall 2 and a downwardly inclined bottom 3, there being an opening 4 in the lowermost portion of the bottom 3. A tube 9 is provided and is se'- cured in the opening 4 of the bottom 8, the tube 9 having inlet openings 10 disposed flush with the lowermost portion of the bo-ttom 3. On the upper end Vof the tube 9, a deflector 11, in the form of a disk, is secured.
Each unit includes an inner member 5, in the form of a n, comprising a side wall 6 and a bottom g, the bottom 7 being Hat, if desired. The lower end isreceived removably in the opening 25 of the bottom 7 of the inner member 5 of the next unit below, it being possible to dispose as ymany units as desired, one above the other, as depicted in Figure 1, and it being possible not only to separate one unit from another unit, but, kas well, to separate vthe lconstituent members 1 and 5 ofeach unit.

The boiler 18 has a nipple 20 into which the lowermost tube 9 extends, the boiler being equippedv with a filling tube 21 carrying a removable capv 22. The boiler 18 and its .contents may be heated by a burner 23 of any preferred sort.
Assuming that a boiler 18 is used, the steam from'the boilerV ascends through the lowermost tube 9, and, being deected by the member 11 comes into contact with the inner member 5 of the lowermost unit, the member 5 being heated and its contents being dried. The steam ascends, then, through the Vother tubes 9 and should there be any exhaust, the exhaust is conducted away by the pipe 12. The waterV of condensation is received on the bottom 3, and, following the inclination of the bottom, enters the tubey 9 through the inlets 10, the water thus being returned to the boiler 18. The boiler 18 preferably operates at atmospheric pressure only, and since there is a considerable amount of condensation, it is not necessary to fill the boiler Ywith water frequently. The contacts between the parts 6 and 2 is sufficiently close to prevent the escape ofsteam at the low pressure at which the device operates.
In order to take down the structure, it is necessary merely to withdraw the escape pipe l2 trom the corresponding opening 25,
to lift vout the uppermost inner member '5,
and' to lift out the uppermost outer member l, the tube 9 thereof being withdrawn :trom the opening 25 of the inner member 5 next therebelom this operation being continued until all of the units have been removed.
In Figure 3 of the drawings, parts here` inbetore described have been designated by lnumerals previously used, with the suffix The tubeV 9a, correspondingv to the tubeV 9 may extend downwardly into a receptacle 46, the boiler 18a being located in any desired place at one side of the part 9a. The conduit 47 leads from thel boiler 18a to the tube 9a. The steam proceeding from the boiler 18a traverses the connection 47 and the tube 9a and ascends. The water of condensation travels downwardly through the tube 9EL and is received inthe receptacle 46. The water 48 in the receptacle 46 closes the lower end of the tube 9'al and constrains the steam to move unit made up of an outer member and an inner member tt-ing therewithin, said members having spaced bottoms, the bottom of the inner member having an opening; a tube iiXed in the bottom of the outer member and adapted to be received in the opening of the bottom of the inner member ot a like unit, the tube having an aperture located close to the bottom of the outer member and forming an inlet for steam and an, outlet for water of condensation.
2. ln a device of the class described, a unit made up of an outer' member and an inner member fitting therewithin, said member haring spaced bottoms, the bottom of the inner member having an opening; a tube iixed in the bottom oi" the outer member and adapted to be received in the opening in the bottom of the inner member of a like unit, the tube having an aperture constituting an inlet tor steam and an outlet for water of condensation; and .a detlector mounted on `'the upper end of the tube.
3. A device of the class described comprising superposed unitsq each unit embodying an outer member and an innermember litting therewithin, said members having spaced bottoms; a tube mounted in the bot-y tom of one outer member and passing through the bottom of the inner member next therebelow, ,the tube being provided with an opening communicating with the space between the bottoms of the members of the unit; and a defleotor carried by the upper end of the tube.
