CONDENSATION REMOVER FOR STEAM-HEATED DRIERS.
This invention. appertains to driers and more particularly to the steam heated roll used in the manufacture of paper for drying or calendering the same.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide novel means associated with the drying rolls for automaticallyremoving the condensation from the rolls as the same forms therein by the steam cooling, the steam being utilized for heating the rolls. 7
In the manufacture of paper, considerabledifficulty is experienced in the'use of the drying or calendering rolls due to the condensation of the steam therein, the removal of the water of condensation being the most difiicult problem.
It is therefore another prime object of the invention to provide means associated with the drying rolls at all times for automatically removing the water of condensation while the rolls are in use, thereby eliminating the necessity of stopping the machine for removing saidwat-er of condensation.
A further object of the invention is the provision of novel collecting troughs for the water arranged within the rolls for scooping up the water as the same forms, and novel means for delivering the water from the troughs to-a suitable funnel and. outlet pipe. 7
A further object of the invention is the provision of novel means for forming the troughs, and novel means for associatlng the troughs with the rolls. p
A still further object of the invention is to provide novel .means for removing the water of condensation'from the calendering or drying rolls of-paper making machines, as the same forms therein, of the above character, which will be durable and efiicient in use, one that .will be simple and easy to manufacture and one which can be incorporated with a conventional roll at a small cost.
With these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in the novel construction,

Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters'designate corresponding parts throughout the, several views, the letter A generally indicates a drying or calendering roll used in the manufacture of paper and B the novel means for removing thewater of condensation therefrom. The roll A is of any con ventional or preferred construction and embodies the cylindrical body "15 having its opposite ends closed by heads 16 and 1.7, one of which can be removable as at 18 for facilitating the placing of water of condem,

illustrating a slightly modified the) head. 16 is provided with the hollow hearing 19 at itsaxial center, while-the head 17 is adapted to be provided with a. solid bearing iintle 20 at its axial center. The steam for heating the roll A is admitted through the hollow bearing 19- in'the usual way andas the steam condenses, the water of condensation collects in the bottom of the roll.
The means B for removing the water of condensation automatically from the roll during the use thereof embodiesa plurality of water collecting troughs 25, which as shown in Figure l of the drawings can extend substantially the entire length of the cylindrical body'15. The collecting troughs can be formed of sheet metal if so desired, and are of a substantially helical shape in cross section and having one longitudinal edge thereof provided with an attaching flange 26 which is bolted or connected by machine screws 27 to the inner faceof the cylindrical body. The free longitudinal edge of the collecting troughs lies inward of the attaching flange, so as to form means for preventing the drip-ping of the water from-out of the troughs as the troughs collect the water therein. The troughs all gradually increase in diameter toward the hollow axial bearing 19 and it can be seen that as the water of condensation is collected in the troughs that the same will have a tendency to flow toward the enlarged ends of the troughs when the troughs are in a raised position. The narrow ends, of the troughs are preferably entirely closed by end walls 28 while the large ends of the troughs canbe partially closed by semi-circular end walls 29. Extending axially within the bearing 19 is a water outlet pipe 30 the inner end of which supports a funnel 31 for the water. This funnel 31 is provided with an enlarged upper entrance 32 which can be inwardly beveled as at 33 for permitting the passing of the rolls thereby. The funnel 31 is arranged stationary within the rolls and the troughs are adapted to empty the water collected thereinto as the same pass by the funnel. A steamring 35 is arranged directly within the inner end of the hollow bearing 19 and is provided with a plurality of steam inlets 36 and it is to be noted that the outlet water pipe 30 passesthrough the center of saidring.
In use of the improved device, steam is admitted through the openings 36 and as'the same is condensed, the water of condensation collects in the bottom of the rolls and is collected by the troughs 25. The water will then run down the troughs and enter into the funnel 31 and out the pipe 30. From the foregoing it can be seen that a convenient means is provided for automatically collecting water of condensation from steam heated rolls ofipaper making machines, hile the rolls are in use.
In Figures 4 and 7 is illustrated a. modified form of the water of condensation coll-ecting means and this modified form is generally indicated by the reference character 0. The'watercondensation collecting means strips at one end'thereof are provided with angular extending attaching feet 43.. which are bolted. or connected by means of screws ld't-o the head 16 of the roll. The opposite ends of the strips have connected thereto rods the inner ends of which are threaded. as at 46 for the reception of turn buckles 47. This arrangement forms an efficient means for supporting the troughs in place. In all other respects this form of the invention is the same as the form previously de scribed.
In Figures 8 and 9 I have shown a still further modified form of the water of condensation collecting means which form is generally indicated by the reference character D; The means-D also embodies equidistantly spaced longitudinally extending troughs 50 and these troughs are shaped in.
the same way as the troughs in the previous forms in cross section and are provided with attaching flanges 51 which are riveted or secured in any preferred way with longitudinally extending strips 52. It is to be noted that these strips 52 extendthe full length of the cylindrical body 15 of the roll A, andthat the troughs 50 also extend substantially the full length of the said body. The terminals of the attaching strips have formed on the ends thereof angularly extending attaching feet which can be bolted, riveted or otherwise secured to the heads 16 and 1'? of the roll. As shown machine screws 54 are utilized for this purpose. The attaching strips 52 at a point intermediate their ends are provided with laterally extending feet 55 which have attached thereto inwardly extending rods 56. The inner ends of these rods are threaded as at 57 for the reception of turnbuckle nuts 58. This forms an eflicient means, for supporting the intermediate portions of the attaching strips 52. This form of the device operates in the same manner as the form already described.
Changes in details may be made without departing. from the spirit or the scope of '-i from said end of the trough, and an outlet water pipe communicating with the cup.
2. The combination with a rotatable drying roll, of means for automatically removing the water of condensation from the roll during the use thereof including a longi tudinally extending water collecting trough secured to the inner surface of the roll, the trough being of a substantial helical shape in cross section having one longitudinal edge thereof provided with an attaching flange and its free longitudinal edge disposed inwardly of said attaching flange.v the trough gradually increasing in diameter toward one end thereof, a stationary water collecting cup arranged within the roll for receiving the water of condensation from the enlarged end of the trough when the same is in an elevated position, and an outlet water pipe communicating with the cup extending outwardly from said roll.
3. The combination with a rotatable steam heated drying roll having a cylindrical body and end closing heads, and a hollow bearing carried by one of said heads, of means for automatically collecting water of condensation in said roll during the use thereof comprising a plurality of equi-distantly' spaced longitudinally extending water collecting troughs, each of said troughs including a body substantially helical shaped in cross section having a longitudinally extending attaching flange at one edge and its other edge located inwardly of the flange and spaced therefrom, means for securing the attaching flange to the inner face of the roll, each trough gradually'increasing in diameter toward one endthereof, a wall closing the narrow end of the trough, a wall partly closing the enlarged end of the trough, an axially disposed water pipe extending through the hollow hearing, a steam ring surrounding the water outlet pipe arranged in said bearing having a plurality of steam inlet openings, and an upright water collecting funnel carried by the inner end of said pipe for receiving the water of condensation from the enlarged ends of the troughs as the same pass bythe funnel.
