IMPROVEMENT IN BOOT-TREES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,490, dated July 1, 1873; application filed May 28, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ORsoN V. ELLIOTT, of Manseldfin the county of Tioga and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boot-Tree and I do hereby decla-re that the following` is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of referencetmarked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

' The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a boot-tree, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to lmake and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a vertical section of my boottree. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the last; and Fig. Sis a horizontal section immediately above the bench or table on which the boot-tree is placed.

A represents a part of the work bench or table, in which is bored a vertical hole for the recept-ion of the vertical shaft B. On this shaft, near the lower end, is formed or attached a collar, a, which rests upon the upper side of the bench or table A and supports the shaft. This collar may be held by means of a button, O, pivoted on the bench A, so as to hold the shaft from being lifted out; and when the but ton is turned ofi' from the collar the shaft can be lifted out from the bench or table. The shaft B passes through staples b bin the front, D, of the boot-leg, and the upper part of the shaft is provided with screw-threads, as shown in Fig. l, and upon the same is placed a wedgeshaped nut, G.` D represents the back of the boot-leg, which is placed on a pin, d, projecting from the front, D, and held between two plates, E E, which are attached one on each side of the front, D. H represents the last, made detachable from, and sliding in grooves upon, the end of the front, D, of the boot-leg. The collar a on the shaft B has a notch, i, on one side, as shown in Fig. 3, into which notch fits a pawl, I, pivoted on the base A, whereby the screw-shaft B is held from revolving, and then, by turning the tree, the wedge Gr will expand the same. l

When the pawl I is'turned out of the notch t' the tree can be turned without affecting the power, as then the shaft will be turned with the tree.

The power for enlarging or expanding the tree, it will be seen, is a combined screw and wedge power applied in one place only, which allows the back to adjust itself to any-sized leg.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The boot-tree DD', provided with the screwshaft B having wedge-shaped nut G, said screwshaft fitting in a socket inthe base A, in combination with the notched collar a and pawl I, all arranged for opera-tion as and for the purpose specified.
