Be it known that l, 3on1; ldanrixson, a citizen of the United States, residing at lfrenshall, .in the county of Carlton and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Stump Pullers, of which the following is a specification. reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. I
This invention relates to stump pullers and has special reference to one of such designed to be transported from place to place by hand as well as being operated manually,
The object of my present invention is to provide certain improvements over a similar type of machine patented by me April 11th, 1916, Serial Number 1,179,128, and among which improvements is that of compactness of parts, automatic adjustability of the machine to the line of draft produced thereby, and other advantages which "will appear in the further description of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, and in which like reference characters indicate like parts:

Adjacent the handle ends of the bars ].1 and securely fixed thereto are the uprights 33, which, bot-h form the legs of the vehicle or wheel-barrow and the fixed portion of the pulling frame thereof. The members 3 3 converge upwardly and carry in their upper ends the transverse shaft 4: upon which are rotatably spaced the sheaves 5-5 of the pulling tackle. Suitable braces 66 are shown as strengthening the structure and bracing the leg portion of the members Braces 7 are also provided which lead from. the lowermost ends of the members 33 to the side bars 1 adjacent the axle of the whee 2. and similar braces 8 lead from adjacent the upper ends of the members 3 3 forwardly and downwardly to the side members 1.
Lpon the shaft 41: is mounted an outside bridle 9 and an inside bridle 10 for the provision of a suitable secure hold about said shaft for the anchor line 11. Adjacent the ends of the shaft 4L- and the upper ends of the members 3 is pivotally carried the forwardly extending side bars 12,the forward ends of which are united by a transversely disposed octagonally shaped frame structure 13, thus providing a pivotally supported frame structure, the forward free ends of which are guided vertically by the members 1-1 which are pivotally attached at their lower ends as at 15 to the handle bars 1 and extend upwardly outside of the side bars 12 where they are held from dislodgment by suitable surrounding guiding members 16 carried by the side bars 12 which permits of free \rnovement vertically of the forward end of the pulling frame and serves as a rest for the forward end of said frame when inactive, in that the side bars 12 may restlupon the shoulders 17 formed by an angular jog in said members 14:.
Just back of the center of the pivotal frame just described, is rotatably j ournalled the crank shaft 18, the ends of which are squared and designed to receive any suitable form of hand operated crank 19, one upon either end if desired. Upon this shaft is loosely mounted the winding drum 20 having one end thereof enlarged forming an internally geared annularflange orhead 21. Upon the shaft 18 and within the head 21 is the small driving spur gear 22Ysecurely fixed to the shaft 18. Intermediate of this gear, meshing therewith and with the internally geared head 21, is j ournalled, as at 23, the intermediate spur gear 2 1. An internally cogged hole 25 is formed in the end of the drum 20 adjacent the car 22 and into which same may be slippe when it is desired to operate the drum 20 downwardly and at the same speed with the shaft 18. This direct connection is accomplished by the longitudinal adjustment of the shaft 18 after the removal of the keeper 26 which is pivoted at 27 adjacent the end of the shaft, the latter being made sufficiently long to permit of the keeper 26, which is equal in width to the width ofthe gear 22, being 7 which are loosely and sli'dably dropped in between the bar 12 and the flange 28 on the shaft 18, as shown in Figure f the drawings.
By the arrangement of gears just described, it is evident that the turning of the shaft 18 in one direction will rotate the drum 20 in the opposite direction and by which the normal winding motion thereof is accomplished. I have shown a dog at 29 pivoted at 30 and which may be conveniently manipulated manually for holding the drum against backward rotation. 31 repre sents the pulling line which is reeved into a double block 32, the fixed end of the line being attached to the block at 2-3, passing to the machine beneath the drum 20 and around one of the sheaves 5, back to the block 32, around one of the sheaves therein, back to the machine, again under the drum around the other one of the sheaves 5, back to the block 32, around the other sheave therein, and thence to and around the drum 20 from the upper side thereof and which lat ter does the pulling as is evident.v
Within the octagonally shapedfront end frame 13 are mounted four horizontally disposed fiked shafts 33, 34,35 and 36, upon mounted anti-friction springs 37 through which the rope 31 passes, as clearly shownin Figure 4 of the drawings, there being two spools on the shaft 31, one on each of the shafts 34 and 35, and two on the shaft 36.
By this means the line in its travel through the frame 13 is prevented from scraping against portions thereof and thus retarded in its motion or damaged by such friction, the spools being free to adjust themselves horizontally as the draft of the different portions of the rope may change horizontally.
In operation it is apparent that the frame in which the winding drum is mounted will automatically adjust itself to the draft of the line 31, it being pivotally mounted on the shaft 4 as before described and the forward end thereof being free to reciprocate vertically on the uprights 1 1,
The entire structure is made as light as possible in keeping with sufficient strength to insure dura-bilitv and provides an exceptionally convenient transported compact stump puller.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pattent, is:
' 1. The combination with a wheelbarrow having rigid upright members adjacent the handles thereof, a fixed shaft supported in the upper ends of the side members, spaced sheaves rotatably mounted upon said shaft. a horizontally disposed frame pivotally mounted on the shaft, a winch carried by the frame,- guides for the free end of the frame,a sheave block forward of the frame, a line reeved within the block and the sheaves with the fall of said line leading to the drum, and automatically aligning the winch carrying frame with the sheave block and an anchor line attached to the winch.
2. The combination with a manually operated vehicle having a winch frame piv otally mounted therein and a block and tackle cooperatively connected therewith, of a frame on the forward end carrying therein horizontally disposed shafts and automatically adjustable guiding spoolsfor the rope of the block and tackle mounted on said shafts. 3. The combination with a vehicle, ofa horizontally disposed frame pivotally suspended in one end of the vehicle, a winch mounted upon the frame, a block andtackle cooperatively attached to the winchfor pulling purposes, and means carried by the free end of the frame whereby the tackle in passin therethrough to the which will auto- 7 matically align the frame therewith when pulled, substantially as described.
