PATENT QFFICE.
SOMERS VAN GILDER, OF KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOT-BLACKING KITS;
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,447, dated July 1, 1873; application filed June 7, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SOMERS VAN GILDER, of Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Boot-Blacking Kit, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of an ordinary polishing-brush with a blacking-box attached to the back, and a daubing-brush attached to the handle, so that all are collectively combined in one article so as not to interfere with the use of the polishing-brush, and thus preventing accidental separation and misplacement of either of the articles, which often occurs with them when not connected besides, it saves the handling of the blacking-box, which is usually in such a state as to smear the fingers. The daubing-brush is detachably connected to the handle of the polishing-brush, so that it can be taken off to use.
The drawing is a side elevation of my improved blacking-kit with a part of the box sectioned.
A is the polishing-brush, which is like ordinary brushes in every respect, except the top of the handle B is flattened and provided with the metal clips or yokes O D. E is the daubing-brush, which is like ordinary ones, except the top of its handle is flattened to correspond with the top of the handle B, and
its ends F G are notched and fitted to be engaged by the clips (3 D, in the manner shown. The two handles are so contrived that they constitute, when clipped together, one handle for the polishing-brush, and yet they are not too small for separate use when the daubingbrush is detached. H is the blacking-box, which I prefer to make in elliptic form to correspond with the form of the back of the polishing-brush. It is attached to the back ofsaid brush in any approved way, so as to be always present with the brush, and so that the handling of it with the fingers is avoided.
I do not, however, in all cases, propose to attach the blacking-box, which it is not essential to have included in the kit as the two brushes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A boot-blacking kit, comprising the polishing-brush, daubing-brush, and the ,blackingbox, or the two brushes only, contained in one article, the daubing-brush being detachably connected to the handle of the polishing-brush, all substantially as specified.
SOMERS VAN GILDER.
