FORREST C. MENDENHALL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BACK REST.
Application filed April 2,
Z '0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Fonnns'r C. MENDEN- HALL, a citizen of the United States, and a residentof the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Back Rests, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in back rests, and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly efficient in use.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a back rest especially designed for outdoor use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter,
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter de scribed and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Fig. 1- is a perspective view of my improved construction embodied in the invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
tially on line 6-6 of Fig. 4; and
. Fig. 7 is an elevational view showing my improved constructionrolled up in a seat member embodied in the invention.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises two end frame members 10 and 11, formed of wood or the like. Each end of the frame members is rigidly fixed to a flexible side frame member 12 and 13 with staples or any other suitable fastening means. A plurality of bars 14 are spaced evenly apart and secured to the flexible members 12 and 13, affording a back rest. Swingingly mounted on each corner of the end frame member 11 are bars 15 and 16 the ends of which engage with a block 16 having a beveled cor ner 17 securing the bars 14 in extended position. On one of the bars 14 a lock bar 18 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 24, 1922.
1921. Serial N0. 457,927.
is swinging-1y mounted and arranged to en,- gage with one side of the bars 15 and 1.6 look ing the same tightly against a lock block 19, secured on each end of the bar 14 and each corner of the end frame member 10. Each of the lock blocks 19 are provided with a recess 19 into which the bars .15 and 16 pass. Supporting members 21 and 22 are secured to each of the bars 15 and 16 by a U-shaped member 23 arranged to fit into a plurality of grooves 24 provided in each of the bars 15 and 16, arranged to support the back rest when in use. Secured to the end frame member 11 is a seat member 20 formed of canvas or any other suitable flexible material, and serving as a cover for the device when not in use. A flexible tongue 25 is secured to the seat member 20 and provided with a plurality of eyelets 25 arranged to receive buttons 26 locking the device when ible handle 27 is also secured to the seat' member 20 afi'ording means for carrying the device.
In use, the device is erected upon a lawn or any other place desired by first locking the bars 15 and 16 into position and fastening the U-shaped members 23 into the desired groove 24, giving the back rest the desired incline. The seat member 20 is then spread out over the lawn or the like and will prevent soiling of the clothing. Pillows or the like may be arranged on the back rest and a comfortable and restful position may be had. When the device is not in use, it can be rolled up in the canvas 20, constituting the seat member, as shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings, and placed away until used again.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of the construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A back rest comprising bars flexibly connected together; a seat member secured thereto; oppositely arranged supports removably engaging said back rest; and U- connected together; a flexible seat secured thereto; bars pivotally mounted on one of shaped members secured adjacent the engaging ends of each of said supports and slidably mounted on said back rest afiording means for adjusting said supports in the desired position permitting the desired inclination of said back rest, substantially as described. 7
2. A device of the class described compris ing bars flexibly connected together affording a back rest; a seatmember secured thereto; means pivotally mounted on one of said bars for holding the said bars in extended position; means pivotally mounted on one of said bars for locking the said holding means in operative position; and means adjustably mounted on said holding means arranged to support the said bars in inclined position substantially as described.
3. A back rest of the class described comprising bars flexibly connect-ed together; a flexible seat member secured thereto; oppo- 'sitely arranged supporting members removably engaging said back rest; and adjustable means mounted adjacent the engaging ends of each'of said supports and slidably mounted on said back rest for adjusting said supports in the desired position permitting the desired inclination of said back rest, substantially as described.
4. A back rest comprising bars flexibly said flexibly connected bars for holding said bars in extended position; a plurality of rabbeted members mounted on said flexibly connected bars arranged for the reception of said pivotally mounted bars; means for 'locking said pivotally mounted bars in said rabbets; and adjustable members mounted on said pivotally mounted bars for supporting said back rest in various inclined positions, substantially as described.
5. A back rest comprising bars flexibly connected together; a flexible seat secured thereto; bars pivotally mounted on one of said flexibly connected bars for holding said [bars in extended position; a plurality of rabvback rest in an inclined position; and a beted membersmounted on said flexibly connected bars arranged vfor the reception of said pivotally mounted bars; means for locking said pivotally mounted bars in said rabbets; supports pivotally mounted on said pivotally mounted bars for supporting said plurality of grooves provided in said pivotally mounted bars for arjljustingthe said back rest in various inclined positions, substantially as described.
6. A back rest comprising bars toldably connected together; a seat member secured thereto; bars pivotally mounted on one of said foldably connected bars for holding said bars in extended position; oppositely arrangedrabbeted members rigidly mounted on one of said foldably connected bars for the reception of said pivotally mounted bars; and a pivot-ally mounted member mounted on one of said foldably connected bars for lockingsaid pivotally mounted bars in said rabbets substantially as described. 7
7. A back rest comprising bars flexibly connected together; a seat member secured V thereto; means pivotally mounted on one of said flexibly connected bars for locking said back rest in extended position; oppositely arranged supports removably engaging said back rest; and U-shapedmembers shiftably mounted on said back rest and pivotallyse cured to said supports affording means for adjusting said supports in the desired position substantially as described.
8. A back rest of the class described cornprising bars flexibly connected together; a seat member secured thereto; oppositely arranged bars pivotally mounted on one of said flexibly connect-ed bars for holding said back rest in extended position; a plurality of rabbeted members mounted on said flexibly connected bars for the reception of said pivotally mounted bars; a lock bar pivotally mounted on one of said flexibly connected bars for locking said pivotallymounted bars in said rabbets; oppositely arranged supports removably engaging. said pivotally mounted bars; and a U-shaped member mounted adjacent the engaging ends of each of said supportsa-nd slidably mounted on said pivotally mounted bars for adjusting ronans'r c.
