UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN PAGAN, OF YONKERS, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHlRT-BOSOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,431, dated July 1, 1873; applicatipn filed I May 17, 1873.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that 1, JOHN PAGAN, of Yonkers, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Shirt-Bosoms, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in folding the cloth of which the bosoms are made in such manner as to re-enforce the portions between the plaits with one or two webs to strengthen it where it wears out soonest, and to do it without sewing on extra strips, as has been done in some cases.
Figure 1 is a transverse section of a bosom showing the modes I have adopted for men forcing the said weak parts, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of a bosom constructed according to my improvements.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
To re-enforce the portion between the middle plait A and the side plait B, I make the narrow plait O of one edge of the cloth, of which the front portion of plait A and the plaits B and D are formed, and above 0 I make an other narrow plait, E, to extend the edge of plait A to the middle of plait C to meet the edge of plait 13.. After forming plait E, the wide middle front plait A is formed, and the web is extended back under plait 0 far enough to make plait B; then it is extended far enough to make plait G, which is extended at H far enough over B to strengthen the single web at the meeting front plaits B and G. The line F showswhere pla-its A, E, and O are stitched together, and line I shows where plaits B and G are stitched. To re-enforce the portion between plaits A and J, one edge of the part of the bosom which forms plaits A, J, and K is folded under plaits A and J to make a narrow plait, L, at the middle of which plaits A J meet, and it is sewed together with the back web of plait A to the front plait A at N. The plait K is arranged to overlap plait J, to re-ent'orce the web which connects them in the same manner that plaits G and B are arranged.
I am aware that a shirt-bosom has been made by the application of strips, as described in the patent of Solomon Sibley, dated October 31, 1871; but in such bosoms the liability tocrack at the points where the plaits meet is not overcome, because the strips that are intended to strengthen are not put in the proper places. Some are on the top of the bosom and some are underneath, and when the linen cuts, as it will, it will show the same ragged space between the plaits as when made in the old way. I therefore make no claim to such method of making a shirt-bosom, as my plan is not by the application of strips of any kind, but to a part of the bosom itself; and the arrangement is such that should the bosom be cut with a knife it could not be seen at the fron t.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- 1. The method of re-eniorcingthe single web between the plaits of a shirt-bosom by means of narrow plaits formed of the cloth of which the wide plaits are made, and by overlapping the edges of the wide plaits, substantially in the manner described.
2. The plaits U, E, A, B, and G, formed of the web composing the upper side of the bosom, substantially as specified.
3. The plaits L, A, J, and. K, formed of the web composing the under side of the bosom, substantially as specified.
JOHN PAGAN.
