Description
E. R. CRUMNER.
lBROOM GUARD.
APPUCATION 4FILED AUG.30. 1920.
Patented Jan. 24, 1922.
Y thickness of the broom head.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IBROOM GUARD.
applicati@ aied August 3o, 1920.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ERNEST R. CRUMNER, citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at `Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia., Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom Guards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a broom guard, which is designed to reinforce and support a corn straw broom or the like, holding the straws togetl er to form a more effective sweeping head and prevent the individual straws separating and breaking.
The device is fully described in the following` specification, reference being made to the drawings by which it is accompanied, in which:
Fig. l is a side elevation of one of the wire side frames of the support.
Fig. 2 is a detail View in the plane of the bend of one of the retaining hooks of this frame.
F ig. 3 is a. plan showing the adjacent ends of the two side frames and the manner of connecting them together.
Fig. e is a view of the connected guard ready for application to a broom, and
Fig. 5 is a view of the broom showing the application of the guard to it.
Each side frame of this gua-rd is formed of a single length of wire, the ends of which are doubled over in the plane of the broom face, from the middle portions 2, which extends across the width of the broom. l
rlhe bent ends of 3 extend a short distance beyond the width of the broom at the manufacturers binding 10, and the ends, which project beyond the width of the broom, are turnedv at right angles, as at 1l, across the rfhe ends, which are bent over at 8, are upwardly turned toward one another in the face plane, as at 4t, and are angularly turned vfrom one another in the same plane for a.
'short distance as at 5, and each eXtreme end Specication of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 406,803.
rIhe natural resilience of the members #L of the side frames holding the hooks 6 in engagement is supplemented by a light coiled spring 8 connected between the bends where the portions 5 turn outward from the portions 4L.
A tubular sleeve 9 of rubber or fabric is applied to the end loops 3 and the springs 7 to prevent the straws of the broom from catching between the coils of the springs.
So constructed, the device forms a simple, easily applied and effective guard for a broom of straw or the like, holding the straws compactly together while permitting them to yield to the sweeping movement.
Having now particularly described my invention, I hereby declare that what I claim as new and desire to be protected in by Letters Patent, is:
1. A broom head, comprising side frames bent from wire to extend across the width of the broom parallel to its lower edge and therefrom upward and inward to adjacent the middle line then outward and upward a short distance to adjacent the manufacturers binding of the broom head where each end is provided with a sharpened hook to penetrate the straw of the broom, springs between the lower ends of each frame outside the side edges of the broom, springs between the bends of each frame adjacent the upper part, and a sheathing of flexible material shielding the first named springs.
2. A. broom head, comprising side frames bent from wire, the medial portion of each frame extending across the width of the broom parallel to its lower edge, each end being bent back upon the medial portion in a plane parallel to the broom face and, from adjacent the side edges of the broom, bent upwardly and inwardly one toward the other and thereafter outwardly turned from one another, each end being bent and sharpened as a hook to penetrate the broom head, ay spring between the outer ends of each frame, a flexible sheath protecting the springs, and a spring between the upturned parts of each frame.
In testimony whereof I affix my s1 ature.
ERNEST R. ORUM ER.
