To all whomit may concern:

Be it known that I, JAcon W. Koi-IN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brush and Broom Bridles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appert ains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates, generally, to improvements in broom-bridles; and, the invention has for its principal object to provide a novel and simply constructed. bridle for brooms which can be readily secured in its'operative position upon the brush-portion or bunch of tied broom-straws, to prevent spreading of the brush or broomstraws, and cause the brush-portion or bunch of broom-straws to retain its proper shape, as a whole, and thereby cause the broom or brush to last longer.

, A further object of this invention is to provide a device or broom-bridle of the general character hereinafter more fully set forth which is provided with a self-ador brush, commonly termed the knot, and by means of which the bunch of broom-straws or brush is attached to the handle, said means acting as a retainer for holding or retaining the device or bridle always in its proper position upon the brush or bunch of broom-straws.

Other objects of this invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly evident from the following detailed description of my present invention.

Similar characters of reference are employed in the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.

Referring now to the said drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates the usual brush or bunch of broom-straws of the ordinary house-broom; 2 indicates the knot of the brush or bunch of broom-straws; and 3 indicates the handle.

The broom-bridle represented in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings comprises four pieces of wires of any suitable thickness, length and form. As shown, two of such wires are taken and are bent at their upper end-portions so as to provide a pair of oppositely curved end-members 4 and 5, each end-memher being provided at its free end with a loop or eye 6. Each pair of wires are twisted, as at 7, each twist being bent or curved, as shown, so that each twist will conform to the edge portion of the brush or bunch of broom-straws 1, and will extend down the edges of the said brush or bunch of broom-straws, substantially in the man ner illustrated in said Fig. 1 of the drawings. Extending laterally in opposite directions from the lower end of each twist 7 are members or portions 8 and 9, and connected with and extending inwardly so as to be arranged upon the faces of the front and back of the brush or bunch of broomstraws 1 are suitable members or portions 10 and 11. In this manner, I have provided two bridle- elements 12 and 13, the members or portions 10 and 11 of the bridleelement 12 being formed with suitable loops or eyes 14, and the corresponding members form an essential part of this or portions 10 and 11 of the bridle-element 13 being formed with open hooks 15, as clearly illustrated.

Suitably attached to the loops or eyes 6 of the curved end-members 4; and the curved end-members 5 of the bridle- elements 12 and 13 are the looped or ring- shaped ends 19 and 20 of suitably coiled springs 18, or the equivalent thereof, and attached to the loops or eyes it and 15 of the members or portions 10 and 11 of the bridle- elements 12 and 13 are the looped or ring-shaped ends 17 of other springs 16. The said ring-shaped end 17 at the one end of each spring 16 is adapted to be hooked into a hook 15 of the members or portions 10 and 11 of the other bridle-member 13, whereby the said springs 16, while permanently connected with the bridleelement 12, are detachably connected with the bridle-element 13.

In arranging the two bridle- elements 12 and 13 in their operative positions upon the brush or bunch of broom-straws 1, as illustrated in Fig. 1., the ends or rings 17 of tlic springs 16 are disconnected from the hooks 15, as indicated in dotted outline in said Fig. 1 and the two springs 18 are slipped over the handle 3, the springs being arranged upon and adjusting themselves to the opposite sides of the knot 2, as clearly shown in said Fig. 1, and in the manner indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The remaining parts of the bridle-elements are suitably arranged upon the respective portions of the brush or bunch of broom-straws, as illustrated in said Fig. 1 of the drawings, and the looped or ring-shaped ends 17 of the springs 16 are hooked over the hooks 15. In this manner, the broom-bridle is operatively connected with the brush or bunch of broom-straws, against accidental displacement therefrom, as will be clearly evident. From an inspection of said Fig. 1 of the drawings, it will be clearly seen, that when the broom-bridle has been placed upon the brush or bunch of broom-straws, that the device will cause the bunch of broom-straws to retain its proper shape, and that the resiliency of the springs 16 will not interfere with the proper use of the broom.

If desired, the broom-bridle may be made in the manner indicated in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings. In that case I use but two wires, the wires being formed with twists 21 and an intermediate ring-shaped portion 22, which is adapted to be slipped over the broom-handle. The twists 21 are curved substantially in the manner shown in said Fig. 3, and extending laterally and in opposite directions from the lower end of each twist 21 are members or portions 23 and 24:. Connected with and extending inwardly, so as to be arranged upon the opposite faces of the front and back of the brush or bunch of broom-straws 1 are suitable members or portions 25 and 26. Thus I have provided two bridle- elements 27 and 28, the members or portions 25 and 26 of the bridle-element 27 being formed with suitable loops or eyes 29, and the corresponding members or portions 25 and 26 of the bridle-member 28 being formed with open hooks 30, as clearly.

Attached to the loops or eyes 29 are the loop-shaped ends 32 of suitable springs 31, said springs having their opposite loopshaped ends or rings 33 detachably connected with the hooks 30 of said members or portions 25 and 26 of the bridle-element 28. The form of broom-bridle just described and illustrated in said Figs. 3 and .L of the drawings is used with the brush or bunch of broom-straws and the handle of the broom in the manner describedin connection with the construction of the broom-bridle illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, and need therefore not be further described.

I am aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts, as well as in. the details of the construction of the same, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claim which are appended to the said specification. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

I claim 1. A broom-bridle made from wire formed with an open .portion adapted to be arranged about the knot of the brush or bunch of broom-straws, a pair of bridle-elements, each element comprising a twist conforming to the edge-configuration of the brush or bunch of straws, and thereby adapted to snugly fit upon the cross edge portions of the said brush or bunch of straws, portions extending laterally in opposite directions from the lower end of each twist, members extending inwardly from each laterally extending portion adapted to be arranged upon the front and back-faces of the brush or bunch of straws, and coiled springs arranged between the ends of the gppositely located inwardly extending memers.

2. A broom-bridle made from wire com prising a pair of bridle-elements, each ele ment consisting of a twist conforming to the edge-configuration of the brush or bunch of broom-straws, curved end-members extending from the upper end of each twist, springs connected with and arranged be tween the free ends of the opposite endmembers, said springs forming with said end-members a self-adjusting open portion adapted to be arranged about the knot of the brush or biinch of broom-straws, portions extending laterally in opposite directions from the lower end of each twist, members extending inwardly from each laterally extending portion adapted to be arranged u on the front and back-faces of the brush or bunCh of broom-straws, and coiled springs arranged between the ends of the oppositely located inwardly extending members, said springs being permanently connected with one set of said inwardly extending members, and being detachably connected with the other set of said members.
