To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN M. BORYK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ansonia, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combination locks and consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement herein described and claimed forming an improvement in my Letters Patent No. 1,326,175, granted December 30, 1919.
One of the objects of the present invention is the provision of a double combination lock adapted for universal use in connection with swinging doors and the like, the lock being provided with a plurality of bolt elements capable of being moved in looking and unlocking position.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a combination double lock mechanism whereby the same may be thrown in inoperative position after the lock has been opened.
A still further object of the invention is directed to a novel and improved double combination lock, which will be positive, in operation, easily operable, strong and otherwise conforming to the requirements of secrecy in constructions of this type.
With these objects in view and others which will be manifest and suggested as the nature and purpose of my invention are revealed in the following specification and drawings wherein I have shown a practical, yet preferred embodiment thereof,

Fig. 9 is a view of a portion of the lock ing rod. Similar parts referring, to like and cor-- responding parts the sewing; the body of the lock consists of a front plate 1, having a rigid inner bar 2, constituting the face of a rectangular case having side walls 3 and an end wall 4 with which are connected the top and bottom plates 5, 6 by screwthreaded bolts 7, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The back 8 of the casing is preferably made integral with the bottom plate 6 and forms a tight fitting joint 9 with the top plate securely positioning the respective parts.
A laterally extending bar 10 parallel with the front plate 1 is adapted to be actuated within the casing, said bar having secured thereto, as at 10 a plurality of lock bolts 11 extending through recesses 12 in the bar 1 so as to engage with keepers (not shown). The said bar 10 is provided with slots 13 near its outer ends to receive pins 14 fixed on the free ends of tapered levers 15, pivoted as at 16 at each side of the casing and lying beneath the bar 10 and its lock bolts. The levers 15 normally retain the bar 10 and its lock bolts 11 inwardly by fiat springs 17 which embrace the pivoted ends of said levers, said springs being held in notches 18, the opposite ends of said springs being ilptained by pins 19 as clearly shown in A central flat locking bolt 20 between the inner bolts 11 is also provided and is formed with a shoulder or abutment 21 against which contacts a lever 22, pivoted as at 23 and within the casing. The extreme outer end of the lever 22 is secured by a pin 24 to the eye 25 on the end of a locking rod 26, said rod extending through the rear wall 4 of the casing, so that when the lever presses against the shoulder 21. the locking bolt 20 is forced outwardly as will be readily understood.
Avertica] stationary spindle 27 secured below the plate 6 by a lock nut 28 is positioned rearwardly of the bar 10 and in axial alignment with the central locking bolt 20. the outer end of said spindle being screw-threaded as at 29 engaging with the nut 30. set in the recess 31 of a turn knob 32. said knob resting on the frame work of a door. for instance. shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The said knob is also provided with a recess 33 for receiving a. sleeve 34, said sleeve having a pin 34; adapted to legister with a slot in the knob 32 whereby said 'sleeve may be rotated thereby. The sleeve passes area-gt en spelling in the cover plate 5 and is provided with an eccentric 35 having a circular groove 36 for a purpose presently to appear. i The central bolt 20 is provided substan- 5 tially centrally thereof with a narrow raised projection 37 having a pin 38 which carries a roller 39, which roller rides in the groove 36 of the eccentric above described.
An arcuately curved guard block 40 held in position by caps 41 in the same manner as in'my patent above referred to is also provided for partially enclosing the eccentric and the mechanism now to be described. Secured as at 42 to the bottom plate 6 and '15 at one corner thereof, is a bracket member 43 having a pivot bolt 44 on which is pivoted a long lever bar 45 parallel with the bar 10, said lever bar being pivotally connected by ashort screw 46 to a link 47. The link 47 is in turn connected by a screw 48 to-the' arm 49 of a hub member 50 secured on a spindle 51 which extends through the upper plate 5, and is provided with an actuating handle (not shown) arranged and 'constructedas set forth in my patent above referred to. m A ratchetwheel designated 52 is freely mounted on thestationary spindle 27, the teeth58 of said ratchet wheel being engage'able by apawl 54pivoted as at 55 to the lever bar 45', the said pawl. having a plurality of teeth 56 to cooperate with the ratchet teethjust referred to.

Arcuate recesses 78 are provided in. the said locking rod 26 which permits the barrel 76 to be rotated in the manner now to be described.
The combination mechanism primarily, consists of a graduated plate 80 on the door or wall (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3), and receives a turning knob 81 having the usual pointer (not shown) common to this type of construction. The recess 82 in the knob accommodates .a spindle 83 secured thereto by a screw'84 and held on the plate 5 by a nut 85. The spindle 83 extends through the top plate 5 and is provided with an enlarged, slotted spindle head '86 positioned concentrically within the housing 72, said head being adapted to rotate a dog 87 loosely mounted on the upper end 88 of a second spindle 89 and held thereon by a screw 90 as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. i r
' It will be observed that the spindles S3, and 89 are in axial alineinent and that the dog extends through one ofthe slots 86 in the spindle head 86 to engage any one of the three lugs??? on the interior of the barrel 76 so as to rotate the same until the notches 77 register with the locking rod 86 it being apparent that the barrel may be rotated in the arcuate grooves 78. When the barrel has registered properly with the locking rod 26, the latter will, of course, be actuated as will be readily apparent.
The housing 72 also provided with a sleeve portion 91, graduated at 91 for registratio-n with a pointer 92 loosely carried by the spindle 89 and held between a small spring 93 and a removable stop or shoulder 94. The sleeve 91 extends through the plate 6 and is screw threaded to receive a: closure member 92 through which the spindle 89 extends, said spindle being screw threaded at 83 in the housing 73 and provided with a turningknob 97 at'it'slower end whereby the dog 87 may be moved into engagement with any one ofthe three lugs 87 whichmay be predetermined from the graduations on In the actual operation of the knob 31 is first turnedtoits' predetermined position and as the spindle head 86 actuates the dog 87, the barrel 76'will be rotated until the notches 77 register with the locking rod 26 thus permitting the said locking rod to be actuated. The-operator then-actuates the spindle 51 and, of course, thelink 47 and lever bar '45 which rotates the respective ratchet wheels until the openings 68 -69 reg-' ister with the-raised projection 37 and its roller. 5 The knob 32. isthenturned and the lock'the eccentric 35 will actuate the roller 39 thus drawing the bolt 20 from its keeper.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 have illustrated my invention embodied in one form by way of example, and which in practice has been found to be highly satisfactory in obtaining the desired results. It will be obvious however that other embodiments may be adopted, and that various changes in the details of construction may be re: sorted to by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. It is furthermore understood that the invention is not necessarily limited or restricted to the precise elements shown except in so far as such limitations are speciiied in the subject matter being claimed.
What I claim is 1. In a combination lock of the class described comprising a casing, a universal bar laterally movable within said casing, and normally pressed toward the rear thereof, a plurality of locking bolts connected to said bar and actuated thereby, a central locking bolt and a raised projection carried thereb between the first mentioned locking bolts, ratchet and dog mechanism cooperating with said central raised projection, means for actuating said ratchet and dog mechanism to lock and release the central belt, a lever and locking rod connected thereto adapted to be actuated by the said central bolt when released, and means for independently locking and unlocking the last mentioned locking rod.
2. In a combination lock of the class described comprising a casing, a universal bar laterally movable within said casing, levers pivotally mounted at the sides of said casing and loosely connected to said universal bar, springs normally urging said levers and universal bar inwardly of the casing, a plurality of locking bolts connected to said universal bar and actuated thereby, a central locking bolt and a raised projection carried thereby between the first mentioned locking bolts, a loosely mounted roller carried by said raised projection, ratchet and dog mechanism cooperating with said raised projection and a sleeve and eccentric cooperating with said roller for releasing the central locking bolt, a lever and actuating rod connected thereto adapted to be engaged by said central locking bolt when released, and means for independently locking and unlocking the last mentioned locking rod.

In a combination lock of the class described comprising a casing, a universal bar laterally movable within said casing levers pivotally mounted and loosely connected to the outer ends of the said bar, springs normally holding said bar inwardly of the casing, a plurality of parallel locking bolts connected to and operable by said universal bar, a central locking bolt parallel with the last mentioned locking bolts, a raised projection and a roller carried thereby on said central locking bolt, an eccentric cooperating with said rollen ratchet and pawl mechanism cooperating with said eccentric to lock and unlock the central locking bolt, a laterally extending bar and a pivoted pawl connected thereto for actuating said ratchet mechanism, a lever and actuating rod connected thereto adapted to be engaged by the said central bolt when released, an auxiliary locking mechanism for said actuating rod, said mechanism comprising a housing, a notched barrel rotatable in a groove in the bottom of said housing, and in arcuate grooves formed in said actuating rod, a rotatable spindle and dog for rotating said barrel to register with the said actuating rod to permit the same to be actuated and spring controlled means for moving said dog out of engagement with the barrel.
