Description

M. H. BALLOU.
TAPE ATTACHMENT.
APPLICATION man JULY 15, 1921.
1,%U3,376o Patented Jan. W, 1922.
IMARCUS H. BALLQU, OF
TSBUEG-H, PENNSYLVANIA.
Application filed July 15,
To all 207mm it may concern lie it known that I, Masons El. BALLOU, citizen of the llnited States, residing at .o\si. |ii-; 'li. in the county of Allegheny and we oi? Pennsylvania, llilYw invented new usettul Improvements in Tape Attach iuents. ot which the following a specification.
This invention relates to an attachment "for a tape line for convenience in taking rents from a lixed object. Avention is intended more particularly as an improvement over the device disclosed in my Reissue Patent #1494? of tieptember 10. 1920, one of the main objects being to provide means whereby the attachmcnt may be readily folded so as to occupy a minimum of space when placed in the pool a. further object is to provide a device which when folded will be free of all unnecessary projections so to permit the same to be readily inserted into or removed from the pocket. Another object is t provide a device which may be readily produced at small cost by stamping and bending from sheet metal. Further objects will appear from the detailed description.
In the drawings Figure l is a top plan view of the device in folded condition;
Figure 2 is a side view of the device as applied;
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the device as applied;
Figure 4: is a fragmentary top plan vlew of the body plate;
Figure 5 is a detail of the head plate;
Figure 6 is a section taken substantially on line 66 of Figure 1.
The device includes a body plate 1 of substantially rectangular shape which may be readily stamped from sheet metal and is provided at one end with a point 2. This body plate is formed with integral tabs which are turned over at right angles to provide arms 3 and lremote from the ends of the plate, and arms 5 and 6 at the free end of the plate, these latter arms having their adjacent ends spaced apart to provide a slot 7 for insertion of a. tape a. The arms 3 and l, as well as arms 5 and 6. are oppositely directed and are spaced from the upper face of plate 1 for reception of the tape line these arms serving to hold the tape in proper alignment with the plate and to prevent casual displacement of the tape.
Specification of nettcrs Pi tent.
Patented lan, lo,
1921. Serial No. 485,025.
Plate 1 is further provided adjacent to point 2, with two openings 8 and with two tabs 5) positionca adjacent to the i: end
of point 2, each oi these tabs being formed 'er l0.
borough openings 8 of bent to form sleeves, the
tabs 9 being turned over or bent to provide sleeves which are in alignment with the sleeves formed from tabs 14:. A pintle pin 16 is inserted through the alined sleeves and serves to hingedly secure the head plate to the body. In bending tabs 9 fingers 10 thereof are so positioned as to contact with head plate 11 when the same is turned in one direction into position at right angles to the body plate 1, as in Figure 2. Toaccommodate post 15 point 2 of plate 1 is further provided with a central opening 17, and head plate 11 is provided with an opening 18 corresponding to point 2 so that the head plate may be turned into parallelism with body 1, the bar 12 serving as a stop element to limit turning movement ot the head plate in the other direction.
By turning the head plate 11 into vertical position'at right angles to body plate 1, the device may be readily applied to a rail C, as illustrated in Figure 2, or any other fixed object from which it is desired to take a measurement. The point 2 may be used for securing the device to an object formed of wood or other material into which the point can be driven.
What I claim is 1. In a device of the character described. a body plate. a head plate hinged to said body plate so as to be moved into parallelism therewith or at right angles to the body plate, optionally, means for limiting turn in; movement of the head plate in one direction. means for limiting turning movement of the head plate in the other direction. and means for attaching a tape to the head plate.
2. In a device of the character described. a body plate. a head plate connected to said body plate and movable into parallelism therewith or at right angles to the body platei optionally. and means for limiting movement of the head plate when turned Two tabs Llinto position at right angles to the body plate, said head plate being-provided with an element adapted for reception of a member secured to a tape.
3. In a device of the character described, a body plate, a head plate, aligned sleeves carried by the head plate and the body plate, a pintle passing through said sleeves tor hingedly connecting said plates, and stop elements carried by the body plate positioned to limit movement of the head plate in one direction beyond a position at right angles to the body plate, the head plate be ing adapted for reception of a terminal loop secured to a tape.
AL. 111 a device of the character described,
a body plate provided at one end with aligned sleeves and with spaced openings, a head plate provided with sleeves projecting through the openings of the body plate and disposed in alignment with the sleeves of said body plate, a pintle secured through said sleeves, means for limiting turning movement of the head plate in one direction beyond a position at right angles to the body plate, and means for attaching a tape to said head plate. Y
In a device of the character described, a body plate provided at one end with alined sleeves and. with spaced openings, a head plate provided with depending arms and with across bar connecting the same, the head plate being further provided. with sleeves projecting through said openings and disposed in alignment with the sleeves of the body plate, a pintle secured through said sleeves, a post secured to the cross bar and disposed in the plane. of the head plate,
mg said arms, said head plate being fun I ther provided with a post element projecting from the bar and with spaced sleeves attached. to the bar and extending through the openings of the body plate in alignment with the sleeves of said body plate, the point of the body plate being provided with an opening to accommodate said post, a pintle secured through said sleeves, and means for limiting turning movement of the head plate in one direction beyond a position at right angles to the body plate.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
Masons n. BALLOU.
