Be it known that I, Jon WALDHEIM, a citizen of the United States, residing in Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inv Combined Typewriting and Computing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combined typewriting and computing machines, and especially to the kind known as the Underwood bookkee ing machine disclosed in the patent to rederick A. Hart, No. 1,176,364, March 21, 1916, in which the numeral keys set up digit-pins, thevalues of which are later carried into a totalizer. The digit-pins are usually mounted upon bars, one bar for each denomination; and as the typewriter carriage passes through a computing zone these bars are brought into play, one at a time, by suitable denomination-selecting mechanism. This comprises suitable linkages, one for each denominational bar, the linkages being engaged by selectors arranged on the typewriter carriage.
Since the carriage travels from right to left and the order of the computing bars is from left to right, there is usually provided in said machine a transposition mechanism, whereby the computing bars may be rendered effective in their descending denominational order. I
A feature of this invention is the provision of simplified and improved means comprising a single connection, common to all of the computing bars, to serve both as transpositioning means and denominational selecting means; this being accomplished without effecting preliminary movements of the computing bars.
To this end there is provided a sub-carriage to be moved by the typewriter carriage, to feed a set of intermediate pins over the indexing pins, and bring them into effective relation with the pin-setting bars, so that the latter, when operated, may depress pins of equal value on the sub-carriage, and consequently depress the corresponding indexing pins on the denominational bars.
As the typewriter or main carriage passes from right to left through the computing zone, the sub-carriage is picked up to move rightwardly into effective relation with the computing bars. After the digit is typed in the last denominational (units) position, the
pick-up mechanism is released from the carriage to permit the sub-carriage to be restored to its normal position.

In the nderwood bookkeeping machine, numeral keys 8 and alphabet keys 9, when depressed, operate key-levers 10 and 11, respectively, to rock bell-cranks 12 to swing type-bars 13 to cause the types 14 thereon to pr1nt against the front side of a platen 15, rotatab y mounted in a carriage 16. The carriage 16 travels on a front rail 17 and a rear rail 18 secured to the main frame 20, and is urged from right to left by aspringdrum 21 connected to said carriage by a strap 22, so that the carriage may be fed at each type stroke, the type-bars being provided, for this purpose, with heels 23 to engage with a curved universal bar 24, to move the latter rearwardly to vibrate a loose dog 25 and a fixed dog 26, on a pivoted dogrocker 27, betweenteeth 28 of an escapement wheel 30, having the usual one-way driving connection with a pinion 31 meshing with a feed rack 32 pivoted on the carriage. he digits as they are typed in the various denominational positions, while the carriage passes through a computing zone, may be set up on computing elements or bars 33 prior to running the numbers into the dial wheels 34 of a register 35, in a manner herea corresponding one of a series of pin-setputing zone, to set the corresponding one of a series of indexing devices or pins 41 on one'o'f the computing bars, by means of intermediate setting devices or pins 42 supported on a sub-carriage 43. i The indexing pins on each computing bar have values from 1 to 9, inclusive, corresponding to the values of the setting bars 40. The sub-carria e normally occupies the position, shown in igures' 2 and 4, with the row of intermediate setting'pins to one side of the set of computing bars 33; said computingbars being arranged side by side in descending denominational order from left to right (Figure 4). The sub-carriage occupies this position until the typewriter or main carriage 16 enters the computing zone, when the sub-carriage is picked up by means (hereinafter described) operated by the typewriter carriage, to cause said sub-carriage to travel step by step to bringthe intermediate setting pins 42into register with the indexing pins 41 on the various computing bars 33 in denominational order for pin-setting operations, while the main carriage moves in the opposite direction through the computing zone.
The intermediate setting pins 42 may be depressed by the setting bars 40 against return springs 44 (Figure 3) to set the indexing pins 41, the setting pins 42 being held in their normal ineffective position against a top plate 45, suitably secured to the subcarriage.
The sub-carriage 43 moves back and forth on guide rails 46 a-nd 47,. and is pro-.
vided with notches 48 and 49 to embrace said guide' rails. It should be understood that any other suitable form of guiding means may be used to guide said sub-carria e.
Efter the indexing pins-corresponding to the digits of the number being typed have been set on the various computing bars 33, the sub-carriage is released from the typewriter carriage, in a manner hereinafter described, to permit it to be restored to its normal position (Figure 4).
The set up number is then run into the dial wheels 34 of the register. For this purpose,'-there may be provided an operating dexing pins 41, which have been set in the path of its movement, to move the various computing bars forwardly through distances equal in values to the values of the set indexing pins, the computing bars being provided at their forward ends with racks 57 meshing with pinions 58 suitably connected with the dial wheels 34, to rotate the latter relatively to a sight-opening 60, in a computer casin 61, through which the numbers on the dial wheels may be read.

To avoid unnecessary idle operationsof the intermediate setting pins 42 on the subcarriage or computer carriage 43, when the main carriage 16 is out of the computing zone, the pin-setting bars 40 may have cutouts 63 to permit their depression without disturbing the intermediate setting pins.
The typewriter. carriage may be rapidly located in any selected denominational position of a column. For this purpose, there may be provided the usual decimal ,tabulator keys 64, which, when operated, depress levers 65 to raise plungers or counter-stops 66 into the path of column-stops 67 on a stopbar 68, secured to the typewriter carriage; the stops 67 being adjustable to columnar positions of the carriage. The typewriter carriage is released when any one of the counter-stops 66 is operated. This may be done in the usual manner by mechanism (not shown herein) which is effective to raise the feed rack 32 out of engagement with the escapement pinion 31, so that the carriage may be pulled leftwardly by the springdrum 21 until arrested by the column-stop 67 engaging the operated counter-stop 66.
The mechanism to pick up the sub-carriage, 43, to cause it to travel over the computing bars when the main carriage 16 tra verses a computing zone, may comprise a pick-up element or hook 70 to be engaged by the column-stops, one at a time, as the typewriter carriage enters the computing zone. The pick-up hook may be pivotally connected at 71 to a lever 72 to swing the latter about its pivot 73 against the tension of a return spring 74. The lever 72 may be provided with a rack or gear sector 75 at its lower end to rotate a gear Wheel 76, secured to a shaft '17 supported by a bracket 78 fixed on a top plate 80 of the computer casing 61. The shaft- 77 extends into the machine and is provided at its inner end with a gear wheel 81,'meshing with a rack 82, secured to the sub-carriage 43, to move the latter to bring the intermediate setting pins 42 into register with the indexing pins 41 of the computing bars 33. As the pickup hook advances with the typewriter carriage, it is guided by a pin 83 projecting therefrom and into a slot 84 in a fixed guide plate 85. The computer carriage 43 is released from the typewriter carriage when the latter passes out of the computing zone. To do this, the pin'83 on the pick-up hook engages with a cam 86 to move the pick-up hook out of engagement with the columnstop or pick-up device 67, thus permitting the computer carriage 43 to be restored to its normal position (:Figure 4) by the return spring 7 4.
The column-stops 67, set at columnar positions of the carriage in which no computa tion is to be performed, may be cut off at 87 (Figure 1) to clear the pick-up hook 70, so as to leave the computer carriage undisturbed when the typewriter carriage passes through-a non-compute columnar position.
The column-stops 67 ride idly over the pick-up hook 70 when the typewriter carriage is returned to the beginningof a new line. For this purpose, the pick-up hook may be provided with a cam 88 to be engaged by the column-stops 67 to depress the'pick-up hook against the tension of a spring 90 bearing against the pin 83 of said pick-up hook.
It will be seenthat only one totalizer is shown, and when the machine is used for vertical or column-totalizing, only a single column or tabulator stop 67 is required to cause the computer carriage 43 to denominationally select the computing bars.
If it is desired to effect horizontal or crosscomputations in various columns, a tabulator stop effective to engage. the pick-up hook 70 is set at each column in which comments, indexing devices on said computing elements, numeral keys, key-operated setting elements, a sub-carriage, intermediate setting devices on said sub-carriage, and pick.- up mechanism for said sub-carriage to be engaged by the pick-up devices, to cause the sub-carriage to move step by step with the main carriage to bring the intermediate set ting devices into register with the indexing devices of the various computing elements and the setting elements as the main carriage traverses the computing zone.
2..In a combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination of a main carriage to traverse a computing zone, pickup devices on said carriage, numeral keys, computing elements arranged side by side in denominational order, each computing element having a set of indexing devices with values corresponding to the values of the numeral keys, key-operated setting de v ces, one for each numeral key, a sub-carriage, a set of intermediate setting devices having values corresponding to the values of said numeral keys, and mounted on said sub-carriage, pick-up mechanism for said sub-carriage to be engaged by said pick-up devices, to cause said sub-carriage to move step by step with the main carriage to bring the intermediatesetting devices into register with the indexing devices of the computing elements successively, in denominational order, as the main carriage traverses the computing zone, and means to disengage the pick-up mechanism from the effective pick up device as the main carriage passes out of the computing zone, o permit the restoration of the sub-carriage.
'3. In a combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination of a main carriage to traverse a computing zone, pickup devlces on said carriage, computing elements, indexing pins on said computing elements, numeral keys, pin setting bars operable by said numeral keys, a sub-carriage, intermediate setting pins on said sub-carriage, and pick-up mechanism for said subcarriage to be engaged by the pick-up devices, to cause the sub-carriage to move step by step with the main carriage to bring the intermediate setting pins into-register with the indexing pins of the various computing elements one by one in their denominational order as the main carriage traverses the computing zone.
4. In a combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination of a main carriage to traverse a computing zone, pickup devices on said carriage, numeral keys, computing elements, each computing element having a set of indexing devices with values corresponding to the values of the numeral keys, key-operated setting devices, a subcarriage, a set of intermediate setting devices having values corresponding to the values of the numeral keys and mountedvon said'sub-carriage, the intermediate setting devices normally occupying a position td one side of the computing elements, said keyoperated setting devices when operated being ineffective to operate the intermediate setting devices when the sub-carriage is in its normal inefli'ective positio and pick-up mechanism for said sub-carriage to be engaged by said pick-up devices to cause said sub-carriage to move step by step with the maincarriage to bring the intermediate setting devices into effective relation with the key-operated setting devices, and into register with the indexing devices on the various computing elements successively in denominational order as themain carriage traverses the computing zone.
5. In a combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination of a main carriage, pick-up devices on said carriage, numeral keys, computing elements, each computing element having a set of indexing pins with values corresponding to the values of the numeral keys, key-operated setting bars having cut-outs, a sub-carriage, a set of intermediate setting devices to be operated by said setting bars, said intermediate setting devices having values corresponding to the values of the numeral keys, and mounted on said sub-carriage, the intermediate setting devices normally occupying a position to one side of the computing elements, and in register with the cut-outs of said setting bars, so that the setting bars, when operated while the sub-carriage is in its normal ineffective position, are ineffective to operate said intermediate setting devices, and pickup mechanism for said subcarriage to be engaged by said pick-up devices to cause said sub-carriage to move step by step with the main carriage to bring the intermediate setting devices into effective relation with the setting bars, and into register with the indexing pins on the various computing elements successively in denominational order as the main carriage traverses the computing zone.
6. In a combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination of a main carriage, computing elements, indexing devices on said computing elements, key-operated setting devices, a sub-carriage, intermediate setting. devices on said sub-carriage, said intermediate setting devices being normally out of effective relation with said keyoperated setting devices, means whereby said main carriage will move said sub-carriage to bring the intermediate setting devices into effective relation with the keyoperated setting devices and into register with the indexing devices of the computing elements successively, in denominational order, as the main carriage traverses the computing zone, so that an intermediate device when actuated by a key-operated setting device will actuate an indexing-device on the computing element of the denomination determined by-the positions of the intermediate devices, and means to release said subcarriage from said main carriage to permit the restoration of Gsaid sub-carriage as the main carriage passes out of the computing zone. v
7. In a combined typewritin and computing machine, the combination of a main carriage to traverse a computing zone, pickup devices, a normally ineffective computer carriage, pick-up mechanism including a. pivoted lever, a pick-up element pivotally connected to said lever and to be engaged by the pick-up devices, an internal gear sector on the inner side of said lever, a pinion meshing with said rack, means operated by said pinion to cause the computer carriage .to move step by step in accordance with the movement of the main carriage when the latter traverses the computing zone, and means to release said pick-up element from the pick-up devices to permit the restoration of said computer carriage when the main carriage passes out of the computing zone.
8. In a combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination of a main carriage to traverse a computing zone, pickup devices on said carriage, a computer carriage, pick-up mechanism including oted lever, a pick-up element associated with said lever to be engaged by the pick-up devices, a rack on said lever, a pinion meshing with said rack, means operated by said pinion to cause the computer carriage to move step by step in a directionopposite to that of the main carriage when the latter traverses the computing zone, and means to release said pick-up element from the pick-ug devices to permit the restoration of saic computer carriage when the main carriage passes out of the computing zone.
9. In a combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination of a main carriage to traverse a computing zone, pick up devices on said carriage, a normally effective computer carriage, pick-up mechanism comprising a pivoted lever, a pick-up hook on said lever to be engaged by said pick-up devices, an internal gear sector on the inner side of said pivoted lever, a pinion meshing with said sector, a second pinion connected with the first-mentioned pinion, a rack on said computer carriage with which said second pinion meshes, to move the computer carriage step by step-in accordance with the movement of the main carriage when the latter traverses the computing zone, and means to release said pickup mechanism from the main carriage when the latter passes out of the computing zone.

In a combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination of a main carriage to traverse a computing zone, pickup devices on said carriage, numeral keys, computing elements arranged side by side, in denominational order, each computing element having a set of indexing devices, with values corresponding to the values of the numeral keys, key-operated setting devices, one for each numeral key, a sub-carriage, a set of intermediate setting devices having values corresponding to the values of said numeral keys, the set of intermediate setting devices bein supported on said sub-carriage, a pivoted ever, a pick-up element connected to said lever, and to be en-- gaged by the pickup devices, a rack on said pivoted lever,-a pinion-meshing with said rack, means operated by said pinion to cause the sub-carriage to move step by step with the main carriage, to'bring the intermediate setting devicesinto register with the indexing devices on'the computing elements successively, in denominational order, as the main carriage traverses the computing zone, and means to disengage the pick up element from the effective pick-up device as the main carriage passes out of the computing zone to permit the restoration of the sub-carriage. 1
12. In a combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination of a carriage to traverse a computing zone, numeral keys, computing elements arranged side by side and in denominational order, indexing devices on said computing elements, setting elements associated with the numeral keys,
