Application led January 26, 1921. Serial No. 440,248.
To all 'uiliom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mnnonmcr K. OLiiim', e. citizen of the United Sintes, residin at l'lixmldyn. in the county of Kings und tate of New York, have invented u certain new and. useful Stoking Examiner, of which the following is n 'specilt-iition.
'My invention relates to n stocking exum ineiand luis for its purpose to provide n de vice which can he inserted in e stocking for the exaiiiinution thereof without danger of injury to the stocking. b
It 1s Well known that in the sale of stockings, particularly ot' silk stockings, great dannige is done in their examination by the The piwftice is to insert the .umd in the Sto-kin down to the toe, el@ amine the foot portion, and then gradually draw the stocking from the liundzzspreading the lingers as the size increases, in order to examine ull portions thereof for im er'fee-v or u sha1-p nail or even u piece of hard liesli often Awill cute-h i thread, particularly oii fine silk stockings, and breuk it, thereby ruining the stoekinn. (lne of the objects of the invention is in provide :in inexpensive, simple, and easily handled device to lie inserted in the 'stocking instead ol the hund, und adopted toidspluy all parts ol. the stocking 'for eziuiiiination es fully as though the hund was inserted, but without the same danger of injury to the stocking:
Other and furthei1 objects of my invenii' i nfiil be apparent from the following` deeeiiption and from tho accompanying drawings, in which* Z-`2;i;ui'e 1 is a plan of one euiliodiineut o? he invention with u stocltin 1 thereover while the toe und :i portion o the foot is Lieiagf oxniuiiied;
Fin-uro 2 o. plan similar to Figure 1 with 'the deiiee 'extended to permit examination oi' the larger poption of t ie stocking;
Figi 'a il :in edge vieu' of this embodiment; and
ifsfzie 4. another embodiment.
Sifnilar reference characters ireler to simiim.' paris ihroughout the drawings.
In the embodiment of Figures l, 2, und 3 u smooth `trame 1 is illubti'ated iuiving hunv dies t2. and un end portion B preferably form-- eil lo llt. the toe oi: heel olf u. stocking.
Within frame l are pirated or otherwise mounted wings or leaves il and 5 adapted to lS-e extended to the extent of the larger portions of the stoek'ni in :my desired nninuei' us hy handles um 7 respectively.
The forward end of wings or leaves 1 und 5 .or the handles or frame muy be provided with any desired device vto limit the degree of extension of the wings fiom frame 1. such for example us lug 8 on wing 1 and lug f) on wingY 5 n'dupted to engage with the iiuier V portions 10 and L1 respectively of end 3 oi' any suitable extension therefrom when the wings are in maximum open position. In orde'i' to prevent the top of the stocking` from extending beyond t'he examiner und oil to the hand of the user, project-ions or shields of :my desired kind muy he provided nein' the buch of the examiner, such, for example, as ruui'ds (i1-shields 12.
hel'rxuiniuer may be made of any desired .materiel Yluwing the necessary ioothuers und freedom from projeetions,`aiinong which muy lie mentioned compositions such ns ure sold under the nume-s of pyi'zilin, celluloid, eondensite, bziltelte, and so forth.
When it is desired to examine n stocking, the examiner is inserted therein until end 3 of the examiner, which preferably is rounded to (it the toe, is in the toc of the stocking. :is the examiner preferably is sl'iorLer than the saloeliiii in order to fzieilitute eine of handling, tie simkinof .will lie in loose folds on the examiner, shield 12 preventing the upper portion of the stocking" eng-.ages the und portion 3 ol' the exiinineil orerwhich it is adapted to fit so tluit the heel euri he inspecter. 'lflieleg portion of the storlfing then is pulled' gradually over the examiner und lmndles 6 und 4iziressed to fom-.e out 'wings on leaves 4 und '5 ,to the full width of the stocking. -Botli sides of the stocking een he examined by turning'l the examiner in the somo manner that the hand is turn l when covered by n stocking. It thus is possible to examine all parte of the stoel-:ing for any imperfections without the ilunger of-iniuiing; the stocking or breaking its threads, and .in u inuuner similar to the )resent method of examination by the insertion o' the hund.
in the embodiment of Figure l, the sup portinff irai-Ine is omitted und wings or leaves 2i 25 with handles 26 `and 2T reepeetively are show;n, Between handle 26 of leaf 24 and handle 2'7 of leaf 25 preferably is provided a spring 3U ,which normally tends to keep the handles spread and lea-ves 2% and 25 in closed position. To prevent sprin 30 from forcing the leaves past closed, osition, wing 25 may be pro'vided.with anl a ut-ment 2S adapted to, coact with an abutment 29 on leaf 25, or anysimple stop device may be provided on .the wings or on the handles to prevent one leaf from passin the other. Similar abutments may be provided on the embodiment ofilguresv 1, 2, und 3 and placed likewise to prevent u too ent extension of the w the showing sing intended as illustrative of means to limit the movement of the'win in any direction desired or necessary. he embodiment also may be provided with a guard or shield 3l similar 1n function to guard or shield l2 in the embodiment of Figures 1, 2, and 3. flhe vends of leaves M and 25 preferably are shaped and rounded. similar to end 3 of the frame 1 in the embodiment ,of Figures 1, 2, end 3-in order to fit the heel and toe of the stocking. vIn using this embodiment -the stocking ,will be drawn over the examiner,
which will be in closed position for the e:-:,
lamination of the toe and heel and then handles 26 and 27 pressed together against the act-ion of spring 30 to force them apart as the larger portions of the stocking are inspected. It is obvious that the Spring also may be used with the embodiment of Figures l, 2, and 3 or that the embodiment of F1gui'e 4 may he used without a ring, the use of the spring in this embo Ime-nt being intended as illustrative of aspiring action in any embodiment, either for mairtaininor the leaves .together normally or maintaining them apart normally.
Many modications of my invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing therefrom or from the scope of the claims, my invention not being limited to the particular embodiments chosen for purposes of illustration but consisting of n. device adapted to be inserted in e stockin l for the examination of all portions thereof.
'What I claim and desire to secure by Let?j 50 ters Pate-nt is: "j 1. As an article of manufacture, a de vice adapted to be inserted in a stocking for the examination thereof comprising 4a air of ivotedwings, means to maintain sai wings l m substantial snperposed alignment, and means to force said wings apart in separate parallel planes.
2. As an article of manufacture, a device adapted to be inserted in a stocking for the examination thereof comprising a pair of wings adapted to be extended in separate parallel planes to fit onlyv a portion of the leg of a. stocking, and means on said wings to` limit the movement of said wings.
3. As an article of manufacture, a, device adapted to be inserted in a stocking for tlie examination thereof comprising :i pair of pivotcd wings having handles thereon, a spring between said handles tending norrnallyl to maintain said wings one over the other, und means to extend said wings Vin separate parallel planes by pressing said handles together.
4. AS an article of manufacture, .f1` de- 75 Y viceadapted to be inserted in a stocking for the examination thereof and comprising a -frame having the end thereof shaped to fit the toe andlieel-of a stocking, wings .pivotally mounted therein, and means to force 50 said wings apart. i
5. As an article of manufacture, a device adapted to be inserted in a. stocking for the examination thereof and comprisin :vfrume having the end thereof shaped to t the toe and heel of e. stocking, Wi sv pivotally mounted therein, and means to imit the extension of said wings.
In testimony that I claim ythe foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of 90 January, 1921. Y
MARGARET K, GLEARY.
