NEEDLE-SHIELD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 30, 1920.
Application filed May 15, 1918. Serial No. 234,825.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANNIE N. HOMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Titusville, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Needle-Shields, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a shield especially adapted to be used in conjunction with a knitting needle or needles and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed. 7
An object of the invention is to provide a shieldof simple and durable structure which may be used for holding and protecting the ends or points of knitting needles and wh ch may also be used to advantage when applied to a belt or article of apparel of the user to hold the end of a knitting needle which is generally used by the right hand thus leaving the hand free to be used for manipulating the yarn and the device will further prevent the needle from dropping or slipping during the knitting operation.
IVith the above object in View the shield comprises a safety pin structure with a tube mounted on one side thereof and extending longitudinally thereof. The said tube is open at one end and closed at its opposite end. When the device is used for holding or protecting a needle or needles two of them are employed and they may be connected together by an elastic band or strip whereby the end portions of the needles may be housed in the tubes and the said strip will hold the two devices in position upon the needles.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the needle shield.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the needle shield.
The needle shield comprises a safety p n 1 having a tube 2 applied to one of its sides and extending longitudinally thereof. The
said tube 2 is open at one end and closed at its opposite end. An elastic tape 3 may be connected at its ends with the pins 1 whereby they are attached to each other and consequently when the tubes 2 of two of the devices are placed over the end portions of a needle or needles the tape 3 will stretch and hold the tubes in position at the ends of the needles. It will be noted that the ends of the tape are attached to the movable limb of an ordinary safety pin, so that should the tape at any time lose its elasticity or become broken, it can be quickly and easily removed from the pin to be knotted or shortened as required, by releasing the movable limb from its keeper and sliding the tape OK the end thereof. Therefore the needles may be safely carried in a bag or other receptacle and they will not penetrate through the sides of the bag for the reason that their pointed ends are inclosed. Also the ends are protected by the tubes. During the knitting operation the safety pin 1 may be attached to the belt or article of apparel of the user in an ordinary manner and the needle which is usually supported by the 'right hand during the knitting operation may be supported in the tube 2 and consequently the right hand of the operator is left free for the proper manipulation of the yarn and the needle is prevented from slipping or falling. It has been demonstrated that such a device for holding the needle while teaching theart of knitting has beenhelpful inasmuch as the pupil is not burdened with the needle but the attention may be directed to the proper manipulation or movement of the yarn. The pins are arranged longitudinally of the tube terminating short of both ends thereof so as to be entirely out of view when the tubes are attached to an article of apparel.
From the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that a needle shield of simple and durable structure is provided and that the same may be conveniently used for protecting a needle and also for holding the same during the knitting operation.
Having described the invention what is claimed is:
A needle shield of the character described comprising a pair of spaced tubular casings, each having one open end and arranged with the opened end in confronting relation, a safety pin carried by each casing and arranged longitudinally thereof for attaching the tube to an article of apparel, said pins terminating short of both ends of the tube whereby they are concealed from view when in use, an elastic tape connecting said tube, loops formed by the terminals of said tape and receiving the movable limbs of the respective pins, whereby said pins can be readily removed when desired.
In testimony whereof I afiix m signature.
ANNIE N; OMAN.
